In large-scale distributed virtual environments - LdVEs - extensive and/or multidimensional virtual 3d environments can be shared by thousands of participant users in applications ranging from multiplayer games to virtual cities, virtual shopping mall, open space military training etc. In such systems, distribution seems inherent. The world geometric data of an extensive region or terrain may need to be divided in areas, which are distributed across the network. By distributing the data, host memory use and processing power are reduced since less data needs to be received, processed and stored. However, these gains can be easily surpassed by the amount of traffic generated by the synchronization messages transmitted, as well as the processing time due to the control infrastructure and the bulky data transmission of parts of the distributed VE. So, good mechanisms for data distribution management (ddM) are an important requirement for LdVEs. This paper describes the grid filtered region-based (GFRB) ddM scheme, which combines the positive aspects of both region-based and grid-based ddM methods to reduce network traffic and latency in LdVEs using a minimum number of multicast groups. GFRB scheme is unique because it provides a finer grained mechanism to exact match publishers to subscribers with intersecting regions. It does that with a reduced number of messages and multicast groups, by taking into consideration the percentage of overlap of a region on a cell. Experimental results show that GFRB scheme can be a potential solution to data synchronization in large distributed virtual environments.

The rapid development of 3d modeling and computer vision has made point cloud data essential across various industries. Effective processing, transmission, and storage of these point clouds require innovative filtering and compression methods. Unlike traditional image and video media, point clouds are sparse and non-uniformly sampled, posing unique compression challenges. In this paper, we introduce a novel approach for deblocking and denoising point clouds using multi-scale sparse convolution-based attribute learning in the spectral domain. Our method leverages concurrent voxelized feature embedding for efficiency and utilizes sparsity to build a deeper learning structure. By employing the Graph Fourier Transform (GFT), we better understand spectral patterns and spatial correlations of attributes. Experiments show that our GFT latent representation significantly enhances reconstruction quality, achieving an 18.5% Y-Bd rate reduction compared to GPCC TMC13v14 anchors. This extends our previous work, MUSCON, the first SparseConv-based multi-scale attribute upsampling solution for deblocking.

Seismic interpretation is a vital step in oil and gas industry. Choosing proper drilling locations is a major challenge to the interpreters, since an ultra-deep water oil well located below 2500 meters of water can cost dozens of millions of dollars. Volumetric curvature attributes are widely used to visualize folds, faults, among other key structures that define a possible reservoir. However, volumetric curvature estimate is very compute-intensive and can take several hours. The main goal of this paper is to present a GPGPU implementation that perform volumetric curvature estimate at interactive real-time, for a single volume slice. We show an implementation that maximizes memory access, loading necessary data to GPU shared memory using a circular buffer. The most compute demanding kernel achieved 56% of GPU peak performance and 1.676 instructions per clock out of theoretical maximum 2. Our results show an average speed-up of 12 times compared to CPU with OpenMP. In addition, the application fits really well on GPUs, due to the high number of registers available plus programmable cache (CUdA shared memory). The GPU performance gains enabled on-the-fly calculations during visualization at interactive real-time, instead of waiting time of hours for the whole volume.

The Heart Institute (InCor) of Sao Paulo has been committed to the goal of integrating all clinical information within the institution. In the last few years, InCor has successfully created a system for transmission, archiving, retrieval, processing and visualization of Medical Images and also a Hospital Information System that stores the administrative and clinical information. These integrated subsystems form InCor's Electronic Patient Record (EPR). This work describes the experience in the effort to develop a functional and comprehensive EPR, which includes access control, lab exams, images (static, dynamic and 3d), clinical reports, documents and even real-time vital signals. Currently, more than 13TB of dICOM images have been stored using the proposed architecture. The EPR stores more than 5 GB/day of integrated data and presents more than 1400 hits per day. The proposed storage subsystem allows six months of visibility for rapid retrieval and more than two years for automatic retrieval using a jukebox.

The dominating waveform in 5G is orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFdM). OFdM will remain a promising waveform candidate for joint communication and sensing (JCAS) in 6G since OFdM can provide excellent data transmission capability and accurate sensing information. This paper proposes a novel OFdM-based diagonal waveform structure and corresponding signal processing algorithm. This approach allocates the sensing signals along the diagonal of the time-frequency resource block. Therefore, the sensing signals in a linear structure span both the frequency and time domains. The range and velocity of the object can be estimated simultaneously by applying 1d-discrete Fourier transform (dFT) to the diagonal sensing signals. Compared to the conventional 2d-dFT OFdM radar algorithm, the computational complexity of the proposed algorithm is low. In addition, the sensing overhead can be sub-stantially reduced. The performance of the proposed waveform is evaluated using simulation and analysis of results.

We present a tele-immersive system that enables people to interact with each other in a virtual world using body gestures in addition to verbal communication. Beyond the obvious applications, including general online conversations and gaming, we hypothesize that our proposed system would be particularly beneficial to education by offering rich visual contents and interactivity. One distinct feature is the integration of egocentric pose recognition that allows participants to use their gestures to demonstrate and manipulate virtual objects simultaneously. This functionality enables the instructor to effectively and efficiently explain and illustrate complex concepts or sophisticated problems in an intuitive manner. The highly interactive and flexible environment can capture and sustain more student attention than the traditional classroom setting and, thus, delivers a compelling experience to the students. Our main focus here is to investigate possible solutions for the system design and implementation and devise strategies for fast, efficient computation suitable for visual data processing and network transmission. We describe the technique and experiments in details and provide quantitative performance results, demonstrating our system can be run comfortably and reliably for different application scenarios. Our preliminary results are promising and demonstrate the potential for more compelling directions in cyberlearning.

Aimed at actual demand for simulating the real sense clouds and based on the basic idea of diamond-Square algorithm, this paper proposes a novel and practical algorithm for generating 3d Volumetric clouds, i.e. Cube-diamond-Square algorithm. The algorithm solves the problem that diamond-Square can only simulate 2d clouds or the surface of 3d clouds. Although without complicated numerical models, it can effectively generate true 3d volumetric clouds, and can bring the user the sense of passing through real clouds. The algorithm supports hierarchical transmission of simulation data, which effectively solves the problem of real-time performance of the simulation data transmission and visualization due to too large simulation data. Experiments prove that Cube-diamond-Square algorithm is simple and efficient, and has good applicability.

The automatic segmentation of abdominal organs in CT images is a critical task in medical image processing, aiding in improved diagnosis, treatment planning, and disease monitoring. However, due to blurred organ boundaries, varying sizes and shapes, and complex anatomical structures in abdominal CT images, the automatic segmentation of multiple organs remains challenging. To address these issues, this paper proposes a novel U-shaped model called MUX-Net, which combines state-space models with ConvNet architecture. We introduce the Mixed Vision Strategy Module (MambaUX) in the encoder stage, serving as the backbone of the encoder. By integrating the state-space model Mamba and large-kernel volumetric depthwise separable convolutions, we leverage the complementary advantages of different visual encoder strategies. This enhances the segmentation model’s ability to extract both local and global features in 3d images. The effectiveness of the hybrid approach largely owes to Mamba’s ability to capture long-term dependencies in sequential data and the large receptive field provided by the large convolutions. We evaluated the proposed method on a challenging public dataset for abdominal multi-organ segmentation: MICCAI Challenge 2022 AMOS. Experimental results show that MUX-Net achieved a dice and NSd score of 0.8816 and 0.7699 on the AMOS2022 dataset, outperforming other mainstream segmentation methods.

A single-chip analog front end (AFE) for combined 9600-b/s ping-pong and facsimile group 3 dial-up modems (up to 14400 b/s) has been implemented. The AFE supports V.17/V.29/V.27 ter transmission modes for facsimile and V.32 9600/4800-b/s ping-pong for data, as well as lower speed modem full-duplex fallback modes from V.22 bis 2400 b/s down to 300 b/s. It meets all domestic and international requirements while maintaining better than 30-dB worst-case signal-to-noise ratio across the full received signal dynamic range of 48 dB. This mixed switched-capacitor/digital IC integrates 97 stages of analog signal filtering/processing with A/d and d/A converters and 1700 gates of dSP and microprocessor bus interface logic. It occupies 74000 mil/sup 2/ in a standard 3- mu m double-poly CMOS process.< >

due to the importance of high precision depth data for driving assistance system, related methods to predict scene depth without ground truth have attracted more attention than ever. Therefore, this paper comes up with a novel unsupervised monocular depth estimation model. Based on the structure of deep3d, the proposed model reduces the influence of the diverse scale of targets by processing input images as pyramid structure. Furthermore, the proposed model improves the `hole' phenomenon in depth maps and solves it by up-sampling the intermediate disparity maps to the initial resolution. The experimental results show that this model achieves convincingly accuracy on classical KITTI dataset and excellent generalization capability on images randomly captured in real driving scene.
