Planning land use changes requires input from experts across several domains with diverse expertise. Currently available tools were not designed for analysing the required ecosystem services before and after land use changes, or for analysing tradeoffs. Our study is motivated by the need for better tools designed for expert analysts and location knowledgable stakeholders to analyse data relating to land use planning, such as ecosystem services data. The effectiveness of an immersive VR visualization system (Immersive ESS Visualizer) for analysing and visualizing ecosystem services data, is evaluated and compared to existing methods of analysis, paper maps and a 2d screen. Although VR presented some difficulties, the benefits of spatially arranging maps, inspecting fine details, navigation by zooming, and inspection of hillshades provided sufficient advantages to make VR an effective tool for ecosystem services analysis. Participants using Immersive ESS Visualizer arranged handheld maps into 3d layouts, which would not be possible with paper or on the 2d screen. Our research demonstrates that geospatial analysis can be supported by comparative visualization in VR.

3d Gaussian Splatting (GS) demonstrates excellent rendering quality and generation speed in novel view synthesis. However, substantial data size poses challenges for storage and transmission, making 3d GS compression an essential technology. Current 3d GS compression research primarily focuses on developing more compact scene representations, such as converting explicit 3d GS data into implicit forms. In contrast, compression of the GS data itself has hardly been explored. To address this gap, we propose a Hierarchical GS Compression (HGSC) technique. Initially, we prune unimportant Gaussians based on importance scores derived from both global and local significance, effectively reducing redundancy while maintaining visual quality. An Octree structure is used to compress 3d positions. Based on the 3d GS Octree, we implement a hierarchical attribute compression strategy by employing a Kd-tree to partition the 3d GS into multiple blocks. We apply farthest point sampling to select anchor primitives within each block and others as non-anchor primitives with varying Levels of details (Lods). Anchor primitives serve as reference points for predicting non-anchor primitives across different Lods to reduce spatial redundancy. For anchor primitives, we use the region adaptive hierarchical transform to achieve near-lossless compression of various attributes. For non-anchor primitives, each is predicted based on the k-nearest anchor primitives. To further minimize prediction errors, the reconstructed Lod and anchor primitives are combined to form new anchor primitives to predict the next Lod. Our method notably achieves superior compression quality and a significant data size reduction of over 4.5× compared to the state-of-the-art compression method on small scenes datasets.

3d Gaussian Splatting (3dGS) has emerged as a groundbreaking 3d scene representation technique, offering unprecedented visual quality and rendering efficiency. However, the substantial data volume of 3dGS scenes poses significant challenges for streaming applications. Existing research on 3dGS has primarily focused on compression and rendering efficiency, neglecting the specific requirements of streaming transmission. Moreover, the Spherical Harmonics color representation in 3dGS complicates viewport-based transmission partitioning. Achieving hierarchical Gaussian streaming without noticeable quality degradation also remains a significant *** address these challenges, we propose SRBF-Gaussian, a new paradigm that revolutionizes the traditional 3dGS format. Our approach introduces viewport-dependent color encoding based on Spherical Radial Basis Functions (SRBFs) and HSL color space, enabling selective transmission of viewport-relevant color data. This reduces data transmission while maintaining visual quality. We implement adaptive Gaussian pruning and transmission, optimized for current viewports and network conditions. Additionally, we develop coherent multi-level Gaussian representations for smooth transitions between quality levels. Our system incorporates user-behavior-aware streaming strategies to anticipate and pre-fetch relevant data. In cloud VR scenarios, our approach demonstrates substantial improvements, achieving a 5.63% - 14.17% increase in PSNR, a 7.61% - 59.16% reduction in latency, and a 10.45% - 30.12% improvement in overall Quality of Experience (QoE).

As artificial intelligence (AI) systems powered by machine learning prolifеratе across domains, thеir complеx innеr workings havе incrеasingly bеcomе "black boxеs," obscuring corе mеchanisms bеhind dеcision-making. This opacity posеs barriеrs to safе and еthical rеal-world intеgration. Intеractivе visualizations that еxplain AI rеasoning in a transparеnt mannеr can еnablе appropriatе trust and facilitatе еffеctivе human-AI collaboration. Howеvеr, gaps pеrsist in mapping еxplanations to trust formation fuеlеd by dual cognitivе procеssеs. This rеsеarch prеsеnts a concеptual framеwork aligning visualization dеsign with phasе-basеd modеls of trust in automation. Thе framеwork dеlinеatеs dеsign dimеnsions for visualizing training data charactеristics, rеprеsеnting modеl architеcturеs, and еxplaining individual prеdictions to targеt diffеrеnt modеs and stagеs of sеnsеmaking. Tailorеd еxpеrimеnts еmpirically еvaluatе prototypеs convеying insights into nеural nеtwork and random forеst modеls for mеdical diagnosis and loan approval tasks. Rеsults dеmonstratе significant improvеmеnts in usеr mеntal modеl accuracy, trust calibration, and collaborativе task pеrformancе with еxplanations vеrsus no еxplanations. The large volume of data from the point cloud brings significant demands on network bandwidth. However, the current transmission framework only considers using lossy compression to control the size of data, while ignoring visually redundant information due to the setting of rendering devices. Based on the fact that point overlapping might occur for the case that a dense point cloud is rendered on a relatively low resolution 2d monitor, we propose a novel quality-aware sampling framework for point cloud transmission. When a target visual quality is determined, an optimal sampling module is designed to remove overlapped points with the help of a simple but effective quality model. By taking into account the impact of multiple factors (i.e., sampling, lossy compression, and client rendering resolution), this quality model can predict the final perceptual quality in the client. Based on a newly constructed dataset which consists of 420 samples, experiment results show that the proposed transmission framework can significantly reduce bandwidth cost (e.g., 6.10% to 84.43%) and processing time (e.g., 8.99% to 92.53%) without introducing noticeable distortion under certain rendering conditions, thus achieving higher bandwidth utilization and better real-time performance.

Recent advancements in technology have led to the development of smaller instruments, sensors, and electronics, enabling small satellite systems to collect vast amounts of data at a relatively low cost. This has sparked significant growth in the private Earth observation (EO) industry. despite the deployment of satellite constellations with improved spectral, spatial, and temporal resolutions, there remains a bottleneck in data transmission and downlink capabilities, hindering efficient information extraction. Emerging technologies in artificial intelligence (AI), inter-satellite communication, and edge processing are promising to address these challenges, revolutionizing satellite missions and operations. The integration of intelligent payloads in various recent satellite demonstrators is marking progress towards autonomous satellite constellations. To meet the growing demand for autonomous and intelligent remote sensing, initiatives like the MOVIQ project are crucial. MOVIQ aims to enhance data processing efficiency and advance EO capabilities through agile satellite platforms, high-resolution optical payloads, fault-tolerant AI processors, advanced applications and streamlined integration and optimization frameworks. These efforts promise to deliver cost-effective, intelligent mission platforms capable of real-time situational awareness and application-specific insights to further drive innovation in the EO sector. © 2025 The Authors.

We present the design and construction of the Silo, a fully immersive stereoscopic cylindrical tiled-display visualization facility. Comprising 168 high-density LCd displays, the facility provides an ultra-high-resolution image of 619 million pixels, and close to 360 horizontal field-of-regards (FoR), aiming to maximize visual acuity and completely engage the human visual sensorium and its periphery. In this article, we outline the motivations, design principles, hardware selection and software systems, and interaction modalities used in constructing the Silo. To address missing visual information due to the absence of a ceiling and floor, we have designed a method that utilizes conformal mapping and optimal mass transport to reproject the entire 360 volumetric FoR of the virtual scene to the available display real estate. We showcase several applications demonstrating the utility of the Silo and report the findings of our user studies that highlight the effectiveness of the Silo layout compared to curved mono and flat powerwall display facilities. Our user evaluations and studies have shown that the Silo supports natural exploration and enhanced visualization due to its capability to render surround ultra-high-resolution stereoscopic views.
