In order to cope with huge mobile data traffic, 3GPP (3rd Generation Partnership Project) has started to discuss the architecture and optimization of a network that introduces a large amount of small base stations (small cells) with higher frequency bands into the area covered by macro base stations (macro cells) with lower frequency bands. In such a network, spectral efficiency will be degraded because of the inter-cell interference among small cells. Therefore, it is important to clarify how much the transmission power of small cells is required to decrease inter-cell interference. This paper presents throughput performances as a function of small cell transmission power for two deployment scenarios. The first is the "co-channel scenario," where the same frequency bands are shared by both macro and small cells. The other is the " dedicated channel scenario," where the frequency band of macro cells is different from that of small cells. The numerical results showed that especially the cell-edge user throughput decreases significantly as the transmission power of small cells decreases. In addition, the co-channel scenario outperforms the dedicated channel scenario regardless of the transmission power of small cells, however, higher cell-edge user throughput can be achieved in the dedicated channel scenario compared to that in the co-channel scenario when the traffic offloading technique is introduced.

This paper analyzes effectiveness of text processing algorithm applied to different document parts for a data set consisting of patent documents. The algorithm is part of the software package which is used as a tool for business intelligence purposes. The tool assembles patent data from publicly available data bases, collects and analyzes patents bibliographic parameters and performs text mining. High-dimensional data contained in the patent documents are transformed into lower dimensionality space (2d or 3d), clustered and visualized. These features of the software tool enabled estimation of the effectiveness of text processing algorithm when run on different parts of the patent, such as abstract, claim, international patent code description and detailed patent description.

Laparoscopic surgery remains a challenging procedure because visualization of the internal target organ cannot be achieved from the laparoscopic image. We have proposed a laparoscopic surgery support method relying on three-dimensional (3d) images reconstructed using a stereo laparoscope and a 3d ultrasound system. The aim of this study is to develop a visualization system providing depth information about blood vessels within the liver. The shape and depth information of blood vessels are then correctly superimposed on a 2d laparoscopic image on the basis following careful registration. The coordinates of the laparoscope and the ultrasound are registered by aligning the two 3d liver surface shapes obtained by a stereo laparoscope and an ultrasonic diagnostic equipment with a mechanically moved convex probe using multiple image processing techniques. Then, the shape and depth information within the liver are calculated, and color-coded blood vessel depth information is superimposed on the original 2d laparoscopic image. In a phantom experiment, the registered 3d images were the mean squared error (MSE) of 5.89 ± 3.11 mm. The 2d laparoscopic image was superimposed the color-coded depth of the blood vessels segmented from the 3d ultrasonic data. The calculation of depth information had the MSE of 1.88±1.40 mm.

We perform statistical analysis of 3d facial shapes in motion over different subjects and different motion sequences. For this, we represent each motion sequence in a multilinear model space using one vector of coefficients for identity and one high-dimensional curve for the motion. We apply the resulting statistical model to two applications: to synthesize motion sequences, and to perform expression recognition. En route to building the model, we present a fully automatic approach to register 3d facial motion data, Based on a multilinear model, and show that the resulting registrations are of high quality.

In this paper, we present design and implementation of a fast runtime visualizer for a GPU-based 3d-FdTd electromagnetic simulation. We focus on improving the productivity of simulator development without compromising simulation performance. In order to keep the portability, we implemented a visualizer with the MVC model, where simulation kernels and visualization process were completely separated. For high-speed visualization, an interoperability mechanism between OpenGL and CUdA was used in addition to efficient utilization of programmable shaders. We also propose an asynchronous multi-threaded execution with a triple-buffering technique so that developers can concentrate on developing their simulation kernels. As a result of empirical visualization experiments of electromagnetic simulations for practical antenna design, it was revealed that our implementation achieved a rendering throughput of 90 FPS for a view port of 512 x 512 pixels, which corresponds to a 12.9 times speedup compared to when the OpenGL-CUdA interoperability mechanism was not utilized. When a standard visualization throughput of 60 FPS was selected, the performance overhead imposed by the visualization process was 15.8%, which was reasonably low compared to a speedup of the simulation kernel gained by the GPU acceleration.

In reverse engineering and computer-aided design (CAd) applications point cloud data is usually manually scanned, reconstructed, and post-processed in separated steps. When point cloud data resulting from a scanning process do not satisfy certain necessary reconstruction requirements, one must perform scanning again to enable proper reconstruction. On-line reconstruction of 3d geometry allows one to generate and update a CAd reconstruction on-line during the scanning process with an hand-held laser scanner. Thus, regions where the scanned data is insufficient for the reconstruction are detected on the fly to allow an immediate correction and improvement of the scanned data. This enables the operator to focus on critical regions in the scanned data to improve the reconstruction quality. We present an on-line segmentation and on-line reconstruction of basic geometric primitives. The presented methods allow for a real-time processing of a point stream. They utilize data structures that can be updated at any time when additional data from the stream has to be processed. This data is used to complete and improve the segmentation and reconstruction during the scanning process.

We propose a framework for 2d/3d multi-modal data registration and evaluate 3d feature descriptors for registration of 3d datasets from different sources. 3d datasets of outdoor environments can be acquired using a variety of active and passive sensor technologies. Registration of these datasets into a common coordinate frame is required for subsequent modelling and visualisation. 2d images are converted into 3d structure by stereo or multiview reconstruction techniques and registered to a unified 3d domain with other datasets in a 3d world. Multi-modal datasets have different density, noise, and types of errors in geometry. This paper provides a performance benchmark for existing 3d feature descriptors across multi-modal datasets. This analysis highlights the limitations of existing 3d feature detectors and descriptors which need to be addressed for robust multi-modal data registration. We analyse and discuss the performance of existing methods in registering various types of datasets then identify future directions required to achieve robust multi-modal data registration.

Recent progress in the field of biomedical imaging has led to the demand for large-scale three-dimensional (3d) image analysis in modern biology. Existing image-processing systems lack either cloud computing services or advanced 3d processing ability. This paper proposes a novel cloud-based communication platform for biomedical images. The system provides visualization, data management, and image-processing functions through a standard web browser. Therefore, the sharing of limited software and hardware resources is achieved, allowing for effective collaboration between researchers. We demonstrate the applicability and functionality of the system by examining typical case studies on biomedical images.

Closed receptacle contents can be reconstructed without invasive approaches by coupling X-ray and 3d data acquisitions. We present a solution to the reconstruction problem that exploits 3d data acquisitions of the environment to initialize the X-ray projection calibration and to align the final reconstruction to a global frame. In particular we show that the problem can be solved, without employing calibration patterns, by precisely locating the X-ray emitters and receiver plates w.r.t. a global reference frame. We then exploit matching contours extracted from the X-ray images to calibrate the projection system and to perform the reconstruction of parametric objects. We provide experimental results to measure the reconstruction precision of the overall system using both synthetic data and real experiments.
