We present a near real-time algorithm for interactively exploring a collectively captured moment without explicit 3d reconstruction. Our system favors immediacy and local coherency to global consistency. It is common to represent photos as vertices of a weighted graph, where edge weights measure similarity or distance between pairs of photos. We introduce Angled Graphs as a new data structure to organize collections of photos in a way that enables the construction of visually smooth paths. Weighted angled graphs extend weighted graphs with angles and angle weights which penalize turning along paths. As a result, locally straight paths can be computed by specifying a photo and a direction. The weighted angled graphs of photos used in this paper can be regarded as the result of discretizing the Riemannian geometry of the high dimensional manifold of all possible photos. Ultimately, our system enables everyday people to take advantage of each others' perspectives in order to create on-the-spot spatiotemporal visual experiences similar to the popular bullet-time sequence. We believe that this type of application will greatly enhance shared human experiences spanning from events as personal as parents watching their children's football game to highly publicized red carpet galas.

Reconstructing a three-dimensional representation of human motion in real-time constitutes an important research topic with applications in sports sciences, human-computer-interaction, and the movie industry. In this paper, we contribute with a robust algorithm for estimating a personalized human body model from just two sequentially captured depth images that is more accurate and runs an order of magnitude faster than the current state-of-the-art procedure. Then, we employ the estimated body model to track the pose in real-time from a stream of depth images using a tracking algorithm that combines local pose optimization and a stabilizing dataBase look-up. Together, this enables accurate pose tracking that is more accurate than previous approaches. As a further contribution, we evaluate and compare our algorithm to previous work on a comprehensive benchmark dataset containing more than 15 minutes of challenging motions. This dataset comprises calibrated marker-Based motion capture data, depth data, as well as ground truth tracking results and is publicly available for research purposes.

datasets of stretches of railway tracks are collected using both Airborne and Terrestrial LidAR scanners having varying density, resolution and provide different views of the railway track. Manual feature extraction from such datasets is tedious and labour intensive. Therefore, automatic extraction of desired features is highly desirable. In this work, we propose a technique to extract the rails from these two types of datasets. Our rail extraction technique models the a railway track as a dynamic system of local pairs of parallel line segments and uses the Kalman filter to predict and monitor the state of the system. The system's state is composed of the two centroids of the parallel line segments as well as their common direction. Additionally, we augment the Kalman filter process to deal with special cases such as missing railway track segments, sensor noise, and data sparseness. Our technique is effective on both types of data sets as we achieve a precision of 97% and a recall of 78% on a high resolution the Terrestrial dataset and a precision of 95% and a recall of 83% on the Airborne dataset.

Statistical human body models, like SCAPE, capture static 3d human body shapes and poses and are applied to many Computer Vision problems. defined in a statistical context, their parameters do not explicitly capture semantics of the human body shapes such as height, weight, limb length, etc. Having a set of semantic parameters would allow users and automated algorithms to sample the space of possible body shape variations in a more intuitive way. Therefore, in this paper we propose a method for re-parameterization of statistical human body models such that shapes are controlled by a small set of intuitive semantic parameters. These parameters are learned directly from the available statistical human body model. In order to apply any arbitrary animation to our human body shape model we perform retargeting. From any set of 3d scans, a semantic parametrized model can be generated and animated with the presented methods using any animation data. We quantitatively show that our semantic parameterization is more reliable than standard semantic parameterizations, and show a number of animations retargeted to our semantic body shape model.

A method is presented to automatically classify objects that lie within the vicinity of streets in 3d point clouds of urban environments. The system first successfully segments objects of interest from the scene through a combination of ground segmentation and road extraction using a Kalman filtering approach, and cluster extraction region growing. Those clusters that fall close to the road are then passed to a classification phase, where they are compared against a labelled dataBase of such clusters. The comparison of clusters is Based upon Variable dimensional Global Shape descriptors, which encode the geometry of the objects into multidimensional histograms, the similarities of which are measured against the dataBase clusters using a variety of metrics including Earth Mover's distance and Bhattacharya similarity. The method was applied to dense data acquired from central New York City, covering an area of 78,000 m 2 . On a test set containing 101 objects partitioned into 5 classes, the method had an average successful recognition rate of 94.5% for a rich set of vehicles, pedestrians, and street furniture such as fire hydrants, street signs, and poles.

Real-time or online 3d reconstruction has wide applicability and receives further interest due to availability of consumer depth cameras. Typical approaches use a moving sensor to accumulate depth measurements into a single model which is continuously refined. designing such systems is an intricate balance between reconstruction quality, speed, spatial scale, and scene assumptions. Existing online methods either trade scale to achieve higher quality reconstructions of small objects/scenes. Or handle larger scenes by trading real-time performance and/or quality, or by limiting the bounds of the active reconstruction. Additionally, many systems assume a static scene, and cannot robustly handle scene motion or reconstructions that evolve to reflect scene changes. We address these limitations with a new system for real-time dense reconstruction with equivalent quality to existing online methods, but with support for additional spatial scale and robustness in dynamic scenes. Our system is designed around a simple and flat point-Based representation, which directly works with the input acquired from range/depth sensors, without the overhead of converting between representations. The use of points enables speed and memory efficiency, directly leveraging the standard graphics pipeline for all central operations, i.e., camera pose estimation, data association, outlier removal, fusion of depth maps into a single denoised model, and detection and update of dynamic objects. We conclude with qualitative and quantitative results that highlight robust tracking and high quality reconstructions of a diverse set of scenes at varying scales.

Time-resolved, 3-dimensional phase-contrast magnetic resonance imaging (3d+t PCMRI) is employed to obtain complete spatial and temporal coverage of the vessels blood combined with spatially registered 3-directional pulsatile blood flow velocities[1][2]. Recent studies have reported that Wall Shear Stress (WSS) quantification from PCMRI are able to use the WSS as biomarkers for different aortas pathologies [3]. Figure [1] shows the pathline visualization of blood flow during one cardiac cycle in the heart of a healthy patient at peak early LV filling, diastasis, peak atrial contraction, and peak systole.

Three-dimensional transesophageal echocardiography (3d TEE) is an excellent modality for real-time visualization of the heart and monitoring of interventions. However, 3d TEE segmentation is still a challenging task due to the complex anatomy, the limited field of view, and typical ultrasound artifacts. To improve the usability of 3d TEE for monitoring interventions, we propose to segment all cavities within the TEE view with a multi-cavity Active Shape Model (ASM) derived from Computed Tomography Angiography (CTA) in conjunction with a tissue/blood classification based on a Gamma Mixture Model (GMM). 3d TEE image data of five patients were acquired with a Philips X7-2t matrix TEE probe. Tissue probability maps were estimated by a two class (blood/tissue) GMM. A statistical shape model containing left and right ventricle, left and right atrium and aorta (LV, LA, RV, LA, Ao) was derived from CTA scans of 151 patients by Principal Component Analysis. Models from individual cavities (ASM part : ASM LV etc.) and of the whole heart (ASM tot ) were generated. First, ASM tot was aligned with the 3d TEE by indicating 3 anatomical landmarks. Second, pose and shape of ASM tot were iteratively updated by a weighted update scheme excluding parts outside of the image sector. Third, shape and pose of each ASM part were initialized based on shape and pose of ASM tot and iteratively updated in a constrained manner to fit the tissue probability maps. All 3d TEE sets were manually outlined in multiple short and long axis views by two observers. The mean outline of both observers was compared to the ASM segmentations by calculating dice coefficients. All patients had preoperative CTA scans which were segmented using an atlas approach. The TEE and the CTA segmentation were registered and dice coefficients were computed. The dice coefficients of the whole heart between the average observer and ASM segmentations were 0.91, 0.75, 0.87, 0.88, and 0.84 (interobserver variability: 0.95,

In order to cope with huge mobile data traffic, 3GPP (3rd Generation Partnership Project) has started to discuss the architecture and optimization of a network that introduces a large amount of small base stations (small cells) with higher frequency bands into the area covered by macro base stations (macro cells) with lower frequency bands. In such a network, spectral efficiency will be degraded because of the inter-cell interference among small cells. Therefore, it is important to clarify how much the transmission power of small cells is required to decrease inter-cell interference. This paper presents throughput performances as a function of small cell transmission power for two deployment scenarios. The first is the “co-channel scenario,” where the same frequency bands are shared by both macro and small cells. The other is the “dedicated channel scenario,” where the frequency band of macro cells is different from that of small cells. The numerical results showed that especially the cell-edge user throughput decreases significantly as the transmission power of small cells decreases. In addition, the co-channel scenario outperforms the dedicated channel scenario regardless of the transmission power of small cells, however, higher cell-edge user throughput can be achieved in the dedicated channel scenario compared to that in the co-channel scenario when the traffic offloading technique is introduced.

Mobile computing devices are ubiquitous and can now carry out computationally-intensive tasks in a timely fashion. This paper presents multi-platform, computational electromagnetics educational software for modern mobile platforms. Performance of the transmission Line Matrix (TLM) solver has been increased using a Single Instruction, Multiple data (SIMd) processing strategy applicable to the majority of available platforms. Included is discussion of the SIMd strategy, performance benchmarking results and user uptake statistics.
