Full-waveform (FW) lidar systems provide range profiles of the Earth topography. They are acquired from airborne platforms or from satellites. Many applications derive from the use of such data, from the extraction of 3d point clouds to the Inversion of vegetation profiles. Nevertheless, handling range profiles is much more difficult than handling 3d point cloud The aim of this paper is to present a research tool based on opensource libraries that can process and visualize such data. We focused our work on the implementation on the 2d/3d interface that gives the possibility to visualize the interaction between the lidar electromagnetic waves and the Earth topography Moreover, this tool integrates several processing steps of FW Lidar data

The biomedical imaging chain is continuously being challenged to reconstruct, analyze, and visualize increasing amounts of data in shorter amounts of time. Parallel computing on multi-core devices and clustered computers has allowed for continued innovation of compute and processing technologies but not without facing serious constraints of cost, space, and power consumption. Over the last three years the graphics processing unit (GPU) and its increased programmability has played an integral role in defining a new dimension to parallel computing with its single chip, many-core architecture as well as evolving the graphics pipeline to enhance visualization techniques. Image reconstruction, segmentation and registration algorithms architected to take advantage of the GPU parallel architecture not only realize massive processing speedups but also set the stage for scalability. High resolution rendering of 3d and 4d datasets are navigated in interactive, real-time approaches. Real time ray tracing and 3d stereoscopic solutions bring increased realism to images. Understanding the optimized mix of GPU and CPU, both in the sense of hardware and software, is necessary for imaging applications to innovate, realize cost/performance efficiency and continue to enhance visualization. Several approaches for GPU programmability are available and will be explored. Innovations in the compute, graphics and visualization space will be discussed to show the relevance of the GPU throughout the imaging chain.

With the development of science, research on data analysis is becoming increasingly important. However, sometimes it is difficult to draw a conclusion from a complex data set. data visualization has been widely used for people to understand more about their datasets by representing the data in a way that visually, highlights the relationships. As the size of data grows exponentially, keeping multiple local copies of the data becomes unrealistic for a collaborative research project. In this paper, we design and develop a cybertool, CT-IANP, which supports collaborative research in the area of atmospheric nucleation. The paper shows how Java 3d, web-based tools, and other techniques are used to achieve the goal.

Effective processing of source data matched to appropriate visualisation can greatly enhance the user's ability to explore and comprehend complex information. While this is a fundamental problem for many domains, in medical applications it is particularly important. None-invasive scanning technologies, such as MRI, have greatly enhanced our ability to 'image' the internal body, however the resultant visualisation is often difficult to comprehend due to both inadequacies in the scanning process and sub-optimal approaches to visualisation and data representation. These factors impose significant cognitive load on the user, requiring skill and experience to accurately comprehend detail and intense concentration, and in less experienced users, to understand the structures present. Our broader research aims to identify whether 3d representations of MRI data sets offer a more intuitive means of viewing the data and thereby enable easier understanding and comprehension of the scanned body region. As part of this research we have constructed a 3d MRI viewing application, raaMediVol, which utilises recent developments in 3d computer graphics hardware, to present an interactive environment that enables the user to view both traditional 2d slice representations and an enhanced 3d volumetric form that is freely explorable and configurable both on traditional 2d computer desktop displays and within Immersive Projection Technologies (IPTs)[1]. Initial evaluation of the two representational paradigms been undertaken through the comparative assessment of experienced clinicians' performance in diagnosing a range of soft tissue pathologies within the shoulder, displayed in both traditional 2d slice, and evolved 3d volumetric representational form. An overview of the application, its technical operation, and the results of the evaluation trials are presented.

The mobile broadcasting services getting deployed around the world are being evolved to new services. One of the notable services is mobile stereoscopic service, called 3d, which can provide users with a stereoscopic view of TV contents while on the move. This paper presents the design and the implementation of 3d dMB receiver enabling the reception of mobile 3dTV and BIFS based interactive data services. Main concepts of 3d dMB receiver are the nonglasses viewing experience, backward and forward compatibility and high transmission efficiency. We demonstrate the main concepts and features of our 3d dMB receiver and outline the implementation result along with the future works. © 2009 SPIE.

The integrated management system of ocean remote sensing data (IMSORS) has recently become more and more important as the data volume growing exponential, the data diversity increasing, and the developing of the marine research, and so on. IMSORS evolves into a service-oriented architecture (SOA) that provides the flexibility, multi-scale, and generality necessary to manage the vast amount of data and applications. Google Earth and web-based GIS are growing rapidly and used to visualize and share three-dimension (3d) marine environmental data in IMSORS. Google earth can provide 3d visual and virtual globe for us. IMSORS display the ocean color information in the globe. Volume datasets have been a primary representation for scientific visualization with the advent of rendering algorithms such as marching cubes and ray casting. Nonetheless, illuminating the underlying spatial structures still requires careful adjustment of visualization parameters each time when a different dataset is provided. This paper introduces a new framework, called feature-driven volume fairing, which transforms any 3d scalar field into a canonical form to be used as communication media of scientific volume data. The transformation is accomplished by first modulating the topological structure of the volume so that the associated isosurfaces never incur internal voids, and then geometrically elongating the significant feature regions over the range of scalar field values. This framework allows us to elucidate spatial structures in the volume instantly using a predefined set of visualization parameters, and further enables data compression of the volume with a smaller number of quantization levels for efficient data transmission.

Creating 3d city from the geographical information is an important goal in the field of visualization for GIS and the needs for Web GIS are growing and expanding rapidly. Many scenes of the 3d cities are built based on the models which are made by computer aided designing software to present real scenes, however, this method costs too much time and labor with the low efficiency. This paper presents a method that can promptly construct a 3d city on the Web according to the geographical information. Our approach uses the descriptions for the city from the geographical and additional information to construct the scene and divides the buildings into "molecule parts". With the bottom-up process from cursory objects to fine buildings to assemble the whole scene, the patterns correspond to Web environment which needs the distributed data management and gradual transmission. Ever divided part which can be classified into the common types and saved into distributed storage environment is constructed according to its characteristics. In addition, we first establish abstract databases to store and classify various "molecule parts" which are created based on geometrical arithmetic, common objects and small models. The descriptive information specifies the data from database, which just need loading rather than producing, with lower cost of time and labor. Our approach designs a processing assembling method to match the different parts of building and the level of matching can be elaborated further with the expanding interfaces. Our approach shares and reuses the resources for rendering, such as geometrical structures, materials, textures and even the small models, to diminish the amount of data and the influence of network delay. Experimental results show that our approach increases the speed for rendering and decreases the transmission capacity greatly. Our approach is appropriate for the Web environment to improve the rendering efficiency and for promptly creating a 3d city.

Recently, the visualization of spatial-temporal data in historic events is emphasized by more and more people. To provide an efficient and effective approach to meet this requirement is the duty of Geo-data modeling researchers. The aim of the paper is to ground on a new perspective to visualize the multivariate spatial-temporal data of the Red Army Long March, which is one of the most important events of the Chinese modem history. This research focuses on the extraction of relevant information from a 3-dimensional trajectory, which captures object locations in geographic space at specified temporal intervals. However, existing visualization methods cannot deal with the multivariate spatial-temporal data effectively. Thus there is a potential chance to represent and analyze this kind of data in the case study. The thesis combines two visualization methods, the Space-Time-Cube for spatial temporal data and Parallel Coordinates Plots (PCPs) for multivariable data, to develop conceptual GIS database model that facilitates the exploration and analysis of multivariate spatial-temporal data sets in the combination with 3d Space-Time-Path and 2d graphics. The designed model is supported by the geo-visualization environment and integrates diverse sets of multivariate spatial-temporal data and built-up the dynamic process and relationships. It is concluded that this way of geo-visualization can effectively manipulate a large amount of distributed data, realize the high efficient transmission of quantitative and qualitative information and also provide a new research mode in the field of the History of CPC and military affairs. © 2009 SPIE.

Ultrasonic 3d imaging is an important tool in NdE applications for quality control, flaw detection, and material characterization. However, ultrasonic 3d images often encompass immense amounts of data, making it very challenging for volumetric image analysis, transmission and storage. In this study, a fast and scalable data compression System-on-Chip (SoC) architecture based on discrete Wavelet Transform (dWT) is proposed. This compression SoC can process A-Scan, B-Scan and C-Scan signals and images in real-time and reduce the data and bandwidth requirements substantially without degrading the signal fidelity. A volumetric image of 128x128x2048 samples is compressed by 96.9% in less than one second by the proposed compression system implemented on a Virtex-5 FPGA. ©2009 IEEE.
