A wide range of simplification techniques for 3d meshes may take advantage of the limitations of the human visual system by concentrating computational resources in those regions where the user's attention will focus most often. Some of those visually outstanding regions may be extracted by means of an automatic visual attention model Additionally, there are some features that are known to have a high impact in the quality perceived by our visual system, as for example the silhouettes. The goal of this paper is to present the feasibility of combining different perceptual criteria into a set of labels that encode the importance of mesh elements according to their distance to releivant regions. These regions may have been independently extracted by applying different criteria in preprocessing time. The combination of the perceptual criteria is parameterizable, allowing to vary their relative importance. Moreover, the possibility of performing this combination in real time allows to adapt the regions of attention to the visualization conditions.

Autism is a developmental disorder characterized by social deficits, impaired communication, and restricted and repetitive patterns of behaviour. Emerging theories indicate interregional functional and anatomical brain connectivity as a likely key feature in autism pathophysiology. Corpus callosum (CC) represents a natural target of autism connectivity research, being the expression of interhemispheric communication. In this paper, a novel method for a robust morphometric analysis of CC data is presented. The standard morphometric approach is based on the analysis of the size and shape of the CC midsagittal cross-section. As there are no gross anatomical landmarks that clearly delimit anatomically or functionally distinct CC regions, several geometric partitioning schemes have been proposed in the literature for morphometric analysis, subdividing CC into subregions whose fiber topography is expected to target different hemispheric cortical regions. A novel tool of morphometric analysis, based on the automated subdivision of a high number of partitions from a CC centroid and on the consequent determination of the CC anatomical landmarks is presented, allowing an automated analysis of CC volumes, shapes and curvatures, suitable for an automated application in clinical environment. Moreover the proposed tool can be used for original post-processing and visualization techniques that may help in the analysis of possible alterations of CC and in the correlations with autism-related diseases. The proposed morphometric tool has been validated and applied for clinical investigation on brain morphometry in children (age 3-11 years) with autism or with other autism spectrum disorders (dSA) and on healthy control subjects who underwent volumetric MRI T1 weighted acquisitions.

Cerebral perfusion data are acquired to characterize the regional blood supply of brain tissue. One of their major diagnostic applications is ischemic stroke assessment. We present a comparison of four interactive approaches to analyzing cerebral perfusion data from ischemic stroke patients which are based on (1) concentration-time curves (CTC) derived from the original data, (2) parameters describing the CTC shape, (3) enhancement trends computed in a. statistical analysis, and (4) semi-quantitative perfusion parameters derived via parametric modelling and deconvolution. The comparison is carried out with regard to the involved data pre-processing, the complexity of the interactive analysis and the resulting tissue selections. It is supported by a visual analysis framework that integrates the different approaches. The rich information content in time-dependent 3d perfusion data is both an opportunity for improved diagnosis and a challenge how to optimize the assessment of such rich data. With our comparison we contribute to a discussion between data-near and model-near assessment strategies and their respective opportunities.

Creating 3d city from the geographical information is an important goal in the field of visualization for GIS and the needs for Web GIS are growing and expanding rapidly. Many scenes of the 3d cities are built based on the models which are made by computer aided designing software to present real scenes, however, this method costs too much time and labor with the low efficiency. This paper presents a method that can promptly construct a 3d city on the Web according to the geographical information. Our approach uses the descriptions for the city from the geographical and additional information to construct the scene and divides the buildings into ldquomolecule partsrdquo. With the bottom-up process from cursory objects to fine buildings to assemble the whole scene, the patterns correspond to Web environment which needs the distributed data management and gradual transmission. Ever divided part which can be classified into the common types and saved into distributed storage environment is constructed according to its characteristics. In addition, we first establish abstract databases to store and classify various ldquomolecule partsrdquo which are created based on geometrical arithmetic, common objects and small models. The descriptive information specifies the data from database, which just need loading rather than producing, with lower cost of time and labor. Our approach designs a processing assembling method to match the different parts of building and the level of matching can be elaborated further with the expanding interfaces. Our approach shares and reuses the resources for rendering, such as geometrical structures, materials, textures and even the small models, to diminish the amount of data and the influence of network delay. Experimental results show that our approach increases the speed for rendering and decreases the transmission capacity greatly. This paper presents a 2-d/3-d registration method for the alignment of cardiac X-ray images to ECG gated CTA data of the coronary arteries. The purpose of our work is to provide visualization of instruments in relation to pre-operative CTA data during interventional cardiology for improved image guidance, especially in complex procedures. The method utilizes the graphical processing unit (GPU) for rendering of digitally reconstructed radiographs (dRRs) from a 3-d CTA-derived coronary model. Using a multi-scale gradient ascent framework, the normalized cross correlation between the simulated and real X-ray image is optimized. Quantitative evaluation is performed by computing the projection error of the vessel centerlines, which was oPn average 1.34 mm.

Biometrics is currently a very rapidly evolving scientific and applied discipline, which studies the different possible ways of personal identification by means of certain unique biological characteristics of each individual. Such identification is very important in various situations requiring restricted access to certain areas, information, personal data, and in cases of medical emergencies. A number of automated biometric techniques have been developed, including fingerprint, hand shape, eye and facial recognition, thermographic imaging, etc. All of these techniques differ in the recognizable parameters, usability, accuracy and cost. Among others, fingerprint recognition stands alone - because a very large database of fingerprints has already been acquired (for historical reasons). Also, fingerprints are usually the main evidence left at a crime scene and can be used to track down criminals. Therefore, of all the automated biometric techniques, especially in the field of law enforcement, fingerprint identification seems to be the most promising. This paper introduces a newer development of the ultrasonic fingerprint imaging. The proposed method allowed a scan to be obtained just once and then to vary the C-scan gate position and width to visualize acoustic reflections from any appropriate depth inside the skin. Also, B-scans and A-scans can be recreated from any position using such a data array. Therefore, this gives total control over the visualization options. By setting the C-scan gate deeper inside the skin, distribution of the sweat pores (which are located along the ridges) can be easily visualized. Given that this distribution should be unique for each individual, this provides additional means of personal identification, which is not affected by any changes (accidental or intentional) of the fingers' surface conditions. A frame frequency multiplier system based on field programmable gate array (FPGA) for time-sequential stereo video is proposed in this paper. The system converts two standard 60 fields/sec interlaced NTSC videos captured by two cameras in different perspective views to a 120 frames/sec time-sequential progressive stereo video. Video synchronization signals are generated based on look-up tables according to the timing of stereo video and a novel ping-pong approach realized by first-in first-out (FIFO) memories is applied to control video data acquisition and transmission in the system. It can provide high quality and flicker-free 3-d stereo images and thus will bring the stereo video system wide applications.

A new transmission approach, referred to as subcarrier-index modulation (SIM) is proposed to be integrated with the orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFdM) systems. More specifically, it relates to adding an additional dimension to the conventional two-dimensional (2-d) amplitude/phase modulation (APM) techniques, i.e. amplitude shift keying (ASK) and quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM). The key idea of SIM is to employ the subcarrier-index to convey information to the receiver. Furthermore, a closed-form analytical bit error ratio (BER) of SIM OFdM in Rayleigh channel is derived. Analytical and simulation results show error probability performance gain of 4 dB over 4-QAM OFdM systems for both coded and uncoded data without power saving policy. Alternatively, power saving policy retains an average gain of 1 dB while using 3 dB less transmit power per OFdM symbol.
