Recent years have revealed a growing importance of Virtual Reality (VR) visualization techniques which offer comfortable means to enable users to interactively explore 3d data sets. Particularly in the field of computational fluid dynamics (CFd), the rapidly increasing size of data sets with complex geometric and supplementary scalar information requires new out-of-core solutions for fast isosurface extraction and other CFd post-processing tasks. Whereas spatial access methods overcome the limitations of main memory size and support fast data selection, their VR support needs to be improved. Firstly, interactive users strongly depend on quick first views of the regions in their view direction and, secondly, they require quick relevant views even when they change their view point or view direction. We develop novel view-dependent extensions for access methods which support static and dynamic scenarios. Our new human vision-oriented distance function defines an adjusted order of appearance for data objects in the visualization space and, thus, supports quick first views. By a novel incremental concept of view-dependent result streaming which interactively follows dynamic changes of users' viewpoints and view directions, we provide a high degree of interactivity and mobility in VR environments. Our integration into the new index based graphics data server "IndeGS" proves the efficiency of our techniques in the context of post-processing CFd data with dynamically interacting users.

The paper presents an approach to efficiently increase the geometric detail of complex building facades by terrestrial laser scanning (TLS). Such applications are frequently required for documentation and presentation of architectural heritage. The modeling of the building geometry is based on a coarse to fine approach. Thus, an approximate 3d building model like it is typically available from airborne data collection provides a-priori information to support the subsequent processing of the terrestrial data. Since the generation of a true CAd description of facade primitives such as windows, doors and balconies is supported by a close integration of such existing building models, the data collection from the scratch can be avoided and the modelling process is facilitated. Thus, after the alignment of the collected LIdAR point clouds to the given 3d model, window structures are extracted and integrated to a refined CAd model. These structures can be further refined by edges extracted from additional façade images. Alternatively to such an explicit 3d representation of façade structures, which is realized by an approach based on cell decomposition, a planar mapping of the LIdAR point clouds to generate a 2.5d representation can be used. By these means a refined visualization of the façade geometry is feasible based on standard computer graphic techniques like bump or displacement mapping. © 2007 international Society for Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing. With the advent of new, more widely available very high resolution (VHR) SAR and optical sensor satellite constellations, the issue of jointly exploiting the corresponding imaging data in the best possible way naturally arises. Our ultimate goal is the pixel-level fusion of these modalities and their visualization in a 3d context, i.e. draped over terrain data, itself obtained from interferometric SAR processing. In this paper, we investigate the issues associated with adapting tools originally developed for low-resolution C-band SAR imagery to high-resolution X-band SAR imagery (both spaceborne). Specifically, we consider the issues associated with SAR interferometry (InSAR) and more particularly those associated with complex interpolation and phase unwrapping. We found that the existing chirp-Z transform complex interpolator previously used at low resolution is perfectly suitable for handling VHR SAR data. We also found that, while the selected phase unwrapping procedure works well when the resolution is reduced by averaging, it is deficient at full resolution, in part due micro-reliefs and specific phase responses. © 2007 IEEE.

In this research, we propose a multi-step method for automatic segmentation of the hip femoral and acetabular cartilages from CT images. differentiation of the acetabular and femoral cartilages in conventional CT images due to very narrow space and low intensity of the articular space is very difficult. For this reason, MRI of the hip under continuous leg traction is the choice for assessment of the hip articular cartilage. However, this procedure is time consuming, painful, and hence inconvenient. By injecting the contrast media in the hip during data acquisition, we separated the femoral and acetabular cartilage from each other. The multi-step approach for segmentation of the femoral and acetabular cartilages is as follows. We first enhance the dynamic range and contrast of the data set by a conventional procedure. We then estimate the center of the femoral head utilizing a Hough transform. The estimated center is used as a pivotal point for beginning the process. Next, based on anatomical knowledge about the femoral head shape and size, we derive a region of interest (ROI) for further operations. In this case, by employing an Image Bottom Hat technique and anatomical knowledge about the curved shaped of the cartilages, we extract the valleys between contrast media and hip bones. The valley between the contrast media and femoral head and pelvis bone is associated with the femoral and acetabular cartilages. The anatomical assumptions we apply in this research is valid in most hip joint images. After segmentation, we present a 3d visualization and thickness map estimation of the hip femoral and acetabular cartilages. The proposed model is successfully applied to fourteen sets (3584 images) of actual in vivo hip CT data.

This paper propose an adaptive communications quality control for Wireless LANs. This method is composed of (a) adaptive transmission frequency setting method, (b) adaptive CFP (Contention Free Period) setting method, (c) queue control method, and (d) prime slot time method. The special features of the proposed method are (1) an efficient data communication without sacrificing guarantee of the maximum delay time and the bandwidth, (2) the reduction of the buffer size, and (3) the throughput enhancement. Numerical examples show the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Over the last few years, the combination of medical image processing and rapid prototyping technologies lead to the birth of Medical Rapid Prototyping (MRP), a technology that has been applied to construct physical models of a patient's anatomy from high resolution imaging data, such as Computed Tomography (CT) and Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI). These models, sometimes referred to as biomodels, are three dimensional (3d) sections of an individual patient such as the bone structure, soft tissue, vascular structures, foreign bodies and implants, and can be used in two major applications, namely, the visualization of invisible structures and surgical training. In this work, a general methodology for reconstruction of biomodels is presented and discussed. This approach is based on the 2d medical images such as CT and MRI. An elementary example is also presented in order to show how the process works, as well as discuss their main advantages and limitations.

Next generation satellite systems are geared towards traditional satellite busses, "Small Sat" and more recently "Micro Sat" bus concepts, which extensively need the use of "On Board Processors" (OBP). Most of these satellite systems are designed to operate in L, C, Ku and Ka frequency bands and deploy both analogue and digital processors with increased functionality and flexibility in less available space. Efficient cost effective solutions providing enhancements in payload processor mass, and size whilst maintaining electrical performance over a wide frequency band can be accomplished by deploying advanced technologies. These include utilizing mature multilayer circuit board (MLPCB) technology, (incorporating integrated passive elements), integrated with multi-chip RF functional modules This paper describes a high fidelity multi-chip MMIC package modelling approach, which offers significant improvement in performance predictions and performance correlation between analytical models and test data. The increased level of integration and multiple functionality afforded by this design approach enables potential savings in mass, size and cost of the functional modules. The technique uses a combination of lumped element and distributed element transmission line approaches to characterize circuit elements and inter-layer transitions within multilayer printed circuit board (MLPCB) with its attributes developed to cover a wide operating frequency band. The model also includes effects of processing techniques, interconnects and 3d RF integration topology (e.g.: package surface mount attachment processes, wire bond interconnects and multilayer wide band RF via transitions). The developed equivalent circuit model addresses RF, mechanical and processing attributes of a MMIC package/MLPCB assembly to derive design parameters adaptable to wide ranging applications The equivalent circuit model is further validated with measured results. Knowledge discovery in databases (Kdd) is an active research domain. due to the number of large databases, various data raining methods were developed. Those tools can generate a large amount of knowledge that needs more advanced tools to be explored. We focus on association rules mining such as "If Antecedent then Conclusion" and more particularly on rules visualization during the post processing stage in order to help expert's analysis. An association rule is mainly calculated depending on two user-specified metrics: support and confidence. All current representations present a common limitation which is effective on small data quantities. We introduced a new interactive approach which combines both a global representation (2d matrix) and a detailed representation (Fisheyes view) in order to display large sets of association rules.

To compress the large amount of point cloud data is emerging as the dire need for the visualization of scientific simulation and for rendering biomedical information. This work proposes a novel technique for the compression of point cloud volumetric and surface data. It is based upon multistage vector quantization (MSVQ) which is improvised for its application over 3d data. The clustering or initial codebook is generated with the help of hybridizing k-means clustering and grow and learn algorithm. The number of codevectors is determined with rate distortion constraint. Conclusively rate distortion analysis is also conducted for critical analysis of the algorithm
