Affix-oriented metadata search is one of the essential fuzzy search capabilities that allow users to find data of interest in their voluminous data set with incomplete query conditions. With the recent transition towards object-centric data management systems in the science community, there is a paramount need for the support of such features in distributed settings. However, existing metadata search solutions either do not support efficient affix-oriented metadata search or do not suit well in a distributed setting of object-centric data management systems. To bridge this gap, we introduce IDIOMS, a metadata search solution underpinned by a distributed metadata index, meticulously designed to enable high-performance affix-oriented metadata search for parallel object-centric storage. One of the standout features of IDIOMS is its efficiency in supporting four distinct types of highly demanded metadata queries. Furthermore, IDIOMS is flexibly catering to both independent and collective metadata search operations. Our experimental comparisons with SoMeta, a state-of-the-art metadata query method, demonstrate more than 400x performance boost for independent queries and up to 300x performance improvements for collective queries, while keeping a small index management overhead.

parallel view is a technique that allows a VR user to see multiple locations at a time. It enables the user to control several remote or virtual body parts while seeing parallel views to solve synchronous tasks. However, these techniques only explored the benefits and drawbacks of a user performing different tasks. In this paper, we explored enhancements on a singular or asynchronous task by utilizing information obtained in parallel views. We developed three prototypes where parallel views are fixed, moving in symmetric order, or following the user's eye gaze. We conducted a user study to compare each prototype against traditional VR (without parallel views) in three types of tasks: object search and interaction tasks in a 1) simple environment and 2) complex environment, and 3) object distances estimation task. We found parallel views improved multi-embodiment while each technique helped different tasks. No parallel view provided a clean interface, thus improving spatial presence, mental effort, and user performance. However, participants' feedback highlighted potential usefulness and a lower physical effort by using parallel views to solve complicated tasks.

As the burst buffer is being widely deployed in the HPC (High-Performance computing) systems, the distributed file system layer is taking the role of campaign storage where scalability and cost-effectiveness are of paramount importance. However, the centralized metadata management in the distributed file system layer poses a scalability challenge. The object storage system has emerged as an alternative thanks to its simplified interface and scale-out architecture. Despite this, the HPC communities are used to working with the POSIX interface to organize their files into a global directory hierarchy and control access through access control lists. In this paper, we present ArkFS, a near-POSIX compliant and scalable distributed file system implemented on top of the object storage system. ArkFS achieves high scalability without any centralized metadata servers. Instead, ArkFS lets each client manage a portion of the file system metadata on a perdirectory basis. ArkFS supports any distributed object storage system such as Ceph RADOS or S3-compatible system with an appropriate API translation module. Our experimental results indicate that ArkFS shows significant performance improvement under metadata-intensive workloads while showing near-linear scalability. We also demonstrate that ArkFS is suitable for handling the bursty I/O traffic coming from the burst buffer layer to archive cold data.

MOOSE, an object-oriented parallel computing framework, has been universally utilized in developing numerical solver. In this work, a finite element method solver with large-scale parallel computing capability is developed based on the MOOSE framework for high-efficient and scalable thermal simulations. The performance of the developed numerical solver is evaluated through comparing the simulation results of a simplified AMD microprocessor with those obtained by the commercial software COMSOL. High consistence is achieved between the two groups of data, and the simulation time is greatly reduced through utilizing the inhouse simulator. © 2023 Applied Computational Electromagnetics Society (ACES).

The world of HPC systems is changing to a more complicated system because the performance improvement of processors has been slowed down. One of the promising approaches is Domain-Specific Language (DSL), which provides a productive environment to create a high-efficient program without pain. However, existing DSL platforms themselves often lack portability and cost DSL developers great effort. To solve this issue, we propose an Aspect-oriented Programming (AOP) based DSL constructing platform, enabling developers to build a DSL platform by combining Aspect modules. Aspect modules manage abstracted application flow, data structure, and memory access on our platform. Therefore, developers can create any DSL platform whose target application has the attributes which HPC applications usually have, the abstraction assumes. This study implemented a prototype platform that can handle MPI and OpenMP layers. The prototype supports three types of applications (Structured-Grid, Unstructured-Grid, and Particle Simulation). Then, we evaluated the overheads caused by achieving flexibility and productivity of the platform.

Respecting an adequate diet is essential for a healthy lifestyle. However, keeping track of the daily consumed food and of what one has in the home fridge may be tedious and time consuming if not backed up by user-friendly applications. In this context, the paper presents some of the main components of an intelligent agent and system aimed to create a user-oriented application for recommending personalized food recipes based on the available ingredients and dietary restrictions in a domestic environment. The developed application includes a component to accurately detect the ingredients from an image taken from inside a fridge equipped with mounted cameras, and allows the user to get information about each ingredient, such as the ingredient type, name and associated calories. To facilitate the development of this application, our own data set of food ingredients was collected and annotated, and an ontology of recipes was developed.

Multi-object detection in large scenes aims to find objects in images, which usually contain more than one billion pixels. Based on the concept of dividing and conquering, the state-of-the-art (SOTA) methods slice the super-resolution image into patches first and then lower the image solution to detect objects later. The advantage of this method is that it can adapt quickly to regular detection algorithms. However, a set of parameters needs to be set manually, such as the size of sliding windows and overlap, which is quite hard to fit all scenarios. It may result in a loss of samples located at the boundary of the sliding window and the oversampling of inefficient samples that appear within the overlap. In this paper, we propose a object-oriented image sampling algorithm based on anchor boxes during training and multi-scale pyramids during inference. Inspired by the mature object detection baseline Scale-YOLOv4, we present more tricks to fit large scenes. The accuracy can reach 66%, which is 24 points higher than the CascadeRCNN model of the official backbone network ResNet50. Finally, we have won first place in the PANDA object detection tracking using this method. © 2022 IEEE.

In the dynamic field of software development, knowledge of multiple programming languages is increasingly valued. To address the demand for cross-language systems, our research investigates code translation and proposes a new approach using transformer models to map cross-language codes. We draw inspiration from the success of transformer-based neural networks in natural language processing and apply these models to the complex world of programming languages. A central hypothesis is that transformers can effectively translate code between languages, acting as a bridge between programming paradigms. We develop a custom transformer encoder-decoder model for program-to-program translation that is initialized with a dataset containing C++ programs and corresponding codes in Haxe, Kotlin, Python, and Java. The cooperation between the encoder and the decoder allows a smooth translation of the code, which shows considerable adaptability. Through fine-tuning with data from other programming languages like Kotlin and Python, our model extends its translation capabilities. Enabling Haxe as an intermediate language further facilitates translation to target languages like Java. This adaptability, based on a transformer-based architecture, effectively meets the challenges of an ever-evolving programming environment. It should be noted that our approach differs from large language models in terms of programming complexity and capturing OOP design patterns. In addition to translation, our research paves a way for code visualization using tools such as Java interactive visualization environment. "Cross-Language Code Mapping with Transformer Models" marks a significant advance towards automatic code translation in object-oriented programming, enriching developer tool kits and promoting collaboration across language boundaries in software engineering. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2025.
