Research into object-based concurrency and parallel architectures is briefly described. A multiprocessing, object-oriented database programming language and environment called RAPP has been designed and implemented, and is based on a tight integration of the relational data model and the object-oriented data modeling facilities of a modular, multiprocessing programming language. Persistence is provided through the relation data type, and so the simplicity of the relational model is retained. However, attributes of relations may be of type class, thereby permitting the implementation of a wide variety of object-oriented data modeling constructs, including aggregation and generalization, and complex objects with shared subobjects. Classes in RAPP support data abstraction, encapsulation, and multiple inheritance. Concurrency is provided by means of an explicit database transaction mechanism coupled with built-in primitives for synchronization, transaction atomicity, and serializability. The system consists of a relatively small, well-structured, multipass compiler which generates P-code and a highly portable run-time support environment.< >

The transaction model provides a good solution to many programming problems, but has been recognized as too strict for many applications. Different parallel and distributed applications have different consistency requirements, so multiple concurrency control policies are needed. When data is shared among applications with different policies, then the policies must operate simultaneously and compatibly. The authors investigate the interoperability of transactions and another consistency model, atomic blocks, which provide exclusive access to an individual object. They explore the implications of 'uncontrolled' concurrency within the same COOPS. The work has been in the context of the MELD object-oriented programming language.< >

A description is given of the architecture and implementation of a distributed graphical tool, the Graphic Issue Analysis (GIA) system to support brainstorming and issue analysis. GIA is implemented using an object-oriented environment for personal computers attached to local networks. It allows groups to share issues and comments on those issues in real time. This group tool allows the user to represent a mental model graphically and share it with others in the group in real time. Conflicts are resolved and semantic information in a general form is preserved. It is expected that the information captured and displayed will greatly enhance the group's ability to gather ideas and reach a consensus on those ideas.< >

The SEPDS system is an engineering framework for experimentation and prototyping. It is intended to provide a cohesive and integrated set of tools to support the design process and profiling of distributed systems. The architecture of the SEPDS system, based on an object-oriented prototyping approach, is described. The underlying concept and the separate system components are also described. The prototyping of distributed systems encompasses such considerations as parallelism, object grain size, and communication and synchronization overhead. The computing power of the available processors is exploited. The features and advantages of the SEPDS system are discussed, emphasizing the features closely related to the distributed system simulation and profiling. The current status of the project and directions for future work are also discussed.< >

The implementation of a prototype of a support for a concurrent model called PO (parallel objects) is described. The target environment is Smalltalk-80. objects in PO can be either passive or active (Aobjects) because of their independent capacity of execution. An Aobject can also host multiple activities within itself. Thanks to a uniform approach, the specification of the scheduling of the activities internal to one Aobject follows the object rules of classification and factorization. Inheritance gives a PO user the change to rapidly prototype different concurrent schemes. The implementation aims at testing a Smalltalk environment suitable for rapid prototyping and even as a support for different concurrent object models.< >

A visually oriented fault simulation environment for WSI architectures based on behavioral simulation of parallel message passing processors and switch-level fault simulation of selected processors is described. The environment was implemented by interfacing the CHAMP switch-level simulator with the OODRA behavioral simulator. The simulation environment was used to measure the fault coverage for a digital adaptive beamforming architecture with a synthetic workload. Fault coverage variation with input set size and array location was investigated. The rate at which faults produce errors in the architecture was also measured.< >

The authors describe a project in which semiformal software development methods were used in parallel with a prototyping effort to develop a real-time monitor and control computer system. The prototype was used to define and clarify the requirements for the system. The semiformal approach was used to capture and document those requirements. The resulting description of the system was then used to migrate the prototype to a first-version production system. The combined approach helped to overcome many of the problems typically associated with prototyping alone. This project was also used as a vehicle for technology transfer. Owing to constraints in the local environment, the approach to technology transfer used differed substantially from those typically described in the literature. The development and technology efforts and the lessons learned from each are described.< >

Four distributed query processing strategies under consideration for incorporation into the Cronus object-oriented distributed computing environment are described. Under Cronus, object storage can be embedded inside applications, and facilities are provided to distribute and replicate automatically the data maintained by the application. The performance of the query processing strategies is analyzed within this environment. The resulting evaluation points out the factors to consider in developing query processing strategies for replicated, object-oriented data, and the impact of those factors on the cost and optimality of the strategies. The evaluation led to the adoption of an optimistic, decentralized strategy which increases parallelism and decreases the size of messages at the expense of an increase in the number of messages transferred.< >

A description is given of the issues encountered in generating an integrated design environment (IDE) based on the DEMETER workbench (DWB) and PIE (a parallel programming and instrumentation environment for UNIX machines). Some of the reasons for using a general integration methodology are explained. DEMETER, which supports complexity reduction, CAD tools management and manipulation, and distributed/parallel problem-solving, is presented. DWB is described. It is shown how the IDE can be built using the DWB and the basic concepts developed in PIE.< >

The authors introduce the Hypercomputer supercomputer, a reconfigurable, massively parallel architecture, a 9,072 processor prototype currently planned. The hypercomputer architecture family is based on arrays of a simple and autonomous unit logic entity, the universal cell. Physically wired in a uniform, eight-degree mesh, the universal cell is pipelined, 8-bit microarchitecture that provides the logical manifestation of processor elements, switch lattices, memory units, et cetera. In this sense, the hypercomputer family is honeycomb reconfigurable. The mesh array is supported by a separate 3D, parallel IO network which provides real-time IO in the planar dimension and distributed configuration and synchronization along the polar dimension. The programming model, is based on a new concept, computational holism, whereby increasingly abstract and logically seamless clusters of tightly coupled cell chunks or actors give rise to parallel and highly specialized centers of computational activity. The software realization of this holistic approach is embodied in hyperware, an object-oriented, visually interactive environment for composing algorithmically specialized actors.< >
