Historically, a typical embedded system has been designed as a control-dominated system using only a state-oriented model, such as FSMs. However, the trend in embedded systems design in recent years has been towards highly distributed architectures with support for concurrency, data and control flow, and scalable distributed computations. This implies that a different approach is necessary. We propose to use some dataflow computational model views to specify embedded systems, because it is a notation that covers the most relevant aspects of distributed computing. In this paper, we introduce a new computational model, known as OAA (object-Attribute Architecture) and present the general characteristics of an OA-methodology to support the design and simulation of distributed computing systems. The matrix multiplication algorithm in the object-attribute distributed computing environment has been used to validate our methodology. The preliminary evaluation results show the feasibility of the OA approach. (C) 2015 The Authors. Published by Elsevier Ltd.

The context of this research is Volpex, a communication framework based on Put/Get calls to an abstract global space that can seamlessly handle multiple active replicas of communicating processes. Volpex is designed for a heterogeneous and unreliable execution environment where parallel applications need replication as well as checkpointing to make continuous progress. Since different instances of the same process can execute in the same logical state at different clock times, communicated data objects must be logged to ensure consistent execution of process replicas. Logging to support redundancy can be the source of a significant overhead in execution time and storage and can limit scalability. In this paper we develop, implement, and evaluate Log on Read and Log on Write logging schemes to support redundant communication. Log on Read schemes log a copy of the data object returned to every Get (or Read) request. On the other hand, Log on Write schemes log the old data object only when a Put request is overwriting a data object. This reduces redundant copying, but identifying the correct data object to return to a Get request is complex. A Virtual Time Stamp (VTS) that captures global execution state is logged along with the data object to make this possible. We develop an optimized Log on Read scheme that minimizes redundancy and an optimized Log on Write scheme that reduces the VTS size and overhead. Experimental results show that the optimizations are effective in terms of storage and time overhead and an optimized Log on Read scheme presents the best tradeoffs for most scenarios.

This paper reports the newly designed first computer science and first programming course CSE101 developed and taught at Arizona State University, and disseminated to many other universities, to address the enrollment crisis as reported by ACM CS Curriculum Committee Review Task Force in 2008. The course teaches the basic computer science and engineering concepts and gives the students the first programming experience through robotics programming. The initial curriculum and the ongoing improvement of the course are presented. The course started with its experiment environment using Microsoft Robotics Developer Studio, Visual Programming Language, and Lego Mindstorms robots. The environment is extended to a Web-based programming environment and Intel architecture-based robots.

An iterative reduced field-of-view reconstruction for periodically rotated overlapping parallel lines with enhanced reconstruction (PROPELLER) MRI

Purpose: To propose a new reduced field-of-view (rFOV) strategy for iterative reconstructions in a clinical environment. Iterative reconstructions can incorporate regularization terms to improve the image quality of periodically rotated overlapping parallel lines with enhanced reconstruction (PROPELLER) MRI. However, the large amount of calculations required for full FOV iterative reconstructions has posed a huge computational challenge for clinical usage. By subdividing the entire problem into smaller rFOVs, the iterative reconstruction can be accelerated on a desktop with a single graphic processing unit (GPU). Methods: This rFOV strategy divides the iterative reconstruction into blocks, based on the blockdiagonal dominant structure. A near real-time reconstruction system was developed for the clinical MR unit, and parallel computing was implemented using the object-oriented model. In addition, the Toeplitz method was implemented on the GPU to reduce the time required for full interpolation. Using the data acquired from the PROPELLER MRI, the reconstructed images were then saved in the digital imaging and communications in medicine format. Results: The proposed rFOV reconstruction reduced the gridding time by 97%, as the total iteration time was 3 s even with multiple processes running. A phantom study showed that the structure similarity index for rFOV reconstruction was statistically superior to conventional density compensation (p < 0.001). In vivo study validated the increased signal-to-noise ratio, which is over four times higher than with density compensation. Image sharpness index was improved using the regularized reconstruction implemented. Conclusions: The rFOV strategy permits near real-time iterative reconstruction to improve the image quality of PROPELLER images. Substantial improvements in image quality metrics were validated in the experiments. The concept of rFOV reconstruction may potentially be applied to other kinds of iterative reconstructions

Wireless networks are being deployed in a wide range of communication scenarios. Calculus of Wireless Systems [8] is introduced for specifying the behaviour of wireless communication. It contains several interesting features, including local broadcasting, half-duplex channel and transmission interference. In this paper we explore an observationoriented semantics for the calculus, which can be used to study network equivalence. We investigate the observation-oriented semantics of wireless networks based on its basic components. A wireless network is specified as a set of nodes running in parallel, which are classified into four different types according to their states. The behaviour of a node is determined by its state with its environment, i.e., nodes which are located close to it. Hence a trace is introduced to record the execution as well as the corresponding environment update of a node. Based on traces of a set of nodes, the behaviour of a network composed of these nodes can be deduced. We also investigate a set of algebraic laws based on the observation-oriented semantics. © Springer international Publishing Switzerland 2015

The ability to reliably distribute simulations across a distributed system and seamlessly integrate them as a workflow regardless of their level of abstraction is critical to improving the quality of product manufacturing. This paper presents the DIVIDER architecture for managing and maintaining real-time performance simulations integrated through SOAs. The described approach captures features present in complex workflow patterns such as asynchronous arbitrary cycles and estimates the worst case execution time in the context of the interfering execution environment.

For development of hardware such as System on a Chip (SoC), RTL simulation is very important to verify the design. Since RTL simulation has to be repeated many times during the development period, the simulation speed must be fast. However, as the design becomes larger and more complex, the simulation time dramatically increases and developers may not complete the simulation in a reasonable time. Therefore we have proposed a new hardware description language named ArchHDL which enables fast RTL simulation. Designers can write RTL design and test bench in a Verilog HDL-like style. Designers can compile design files in ArchHDL with standard C++ compiler and simulate them by executing the binary. The ArchHDL simulation is cycle accurate and can be parallelized using OpenMP without decreasing the accuracy. In this paper, we show the effectiveness of ArchHDL under a manycore environment. We use Intel Xeon Phi 31S1P Coprocessor in native execution mode to run parallel ArchHDL simulation. For performance evaluation, we use a NoC and a MIPS based manycore processor. As a result, the ArchHDL simulation on 57 cores of the Xeon Phi running at 1.1 GHz achieves up to 48x speedup compared to 1-core execution. Moreover, ArchHDL on 57 cores of the Xeon Phi is up to 9.7x faster than Synopsys VCS running on a single thread of Intel Xeon CPU E5-2687W operating at 3.1GHz and up to 1.7x faster than ArchHDL on 8 cores of the Xeon CPU E5-2687W.
