Web software development and cloud computing based on Service-oriented Architecture (SOA) represent the latest parallel distributed computing theories, practices, and technologies. As a distributed software development diagram, SOA is being taught in many computer science programs. We do not suggest using SOA to replace the currently taught object-oriented computing paradigm. As SOA is based on object-oriented computing, we suggest teaching SOA as the continuation and extension. At Arizona State University, SOA paradigm is incorporated into our computing Science program since 2006. This paper presents the topics of the related courses and the open resources created for the courses, which are available for public accesses, including textbooks, lecture presentation slides, tests and assignments, software tools, and a repository of components, services and applications.

Processors with large numbers of cores are becoming commonplace. In order to take advantage of the available resources in these systems, the programming paradigm has to move towards increased parallelism. However, increasing the level of concurrency in the program does not necessarily lead to better performance. parallel programming models have to provide flexible ways of defining parallel tasks and at the same time, efficiently managing the created tasks. OpenMP is a widely accepted programming model for shared-memory architectures. In this paper we highlight some of the drawbacks in the OpenMP tasking approach, and propose an alternative model based on the Glasgow parallel Reduction Machine (GPRM) programming framework. As the main focus of this study, we deploy our model to solve a fundamental linear algebra problem, LU factorisation of sparse matrices. We have used the SparseLU benchmark from the BOTS benchmark suite, and compared the results obtained from our model to those of the OpenMP tasking approach. The TILEPro64 system has been used to run the experiments. The results are very promising, not only because of the performance improvement for this particular problem, but also because they verify the task management efficiency, stability, and flexibility of our model, which can be applied to solve problems in future many-core systems.

The Notification-oriented Paradigm (NOP) defines a new approach for conception, structuring, and execution of software leading to performance improvements, organization of causal knowledge, and decoupling of programming entities when compared to standard solutions based upon current paradigms, such as the Imperative Paradigm (IP) and the Declarative Paradigm (DP). These paradigms present drawbacks such as waste of processing capacity and coupling among entities, due to their orientation to a monolithic inference mechanism that is based on causal evaluation implemented by means of searches over passive computational entities. The NOP, however, proposes a different approach of structuring software and realization of its inferences, which are based upon small, smart, and decoupled collaborative entities that interact by means of precise notifications. In this way, NOP achieves responsiveness, distributiveness, consistency, and robustness. These features are among the demands of Sentient computing that combines ubiquitous and 'traditional' computing providing monitoring actuation on a given environment. This paper analyzes the NOP applicability to Sentient computing by confronting the demands of the latter with the characteristics of the former. As conclusion, the NOP is considered applicable to this sort of computational system.

Embedded control systems such as automotive form large-scale distributed ones which consist of numerous CPUs and devices, including plants and various hardware components. The complexity of such systems has increased for sophisticated control using numerous types of sensor data. Meanwhile, market pressures lead to reducing development periods for the large-scale distributed embedded control systems. A model-based design becomes popular to solve the above problems, especially automotive industries. In this paper, we describe a wide-area distributed integrated test environment based on the model-based design. The key features are communication middleware to enable wide-area distributed test with integrating the programs in widely distributed sites and control program execution with models of multiple abstraction levels in the model-based design. Furthermore, we developed a model agent simulation. Instead of a plant model that might be located and simulated by MATLAB/Simulink in a remote site, a model agent behaves like the model in a local computer. The model agent simulation significantly reduces the test execution time in a prototype evaluation.

Sensor/actuator networks are becoming hierarchical, with wireless ad hoc networks interconnected via infrastructured wireless (e.g. the cellular network) and the Internet. This trend is being driven by new application domains such as cyber-ecological systems. In these systems, sensor/actuator networks and data centers form a geographically-distributed closed-loop system capable of near real-time sensing and actuation of the physical environment. To manage the complexity of this interconnected sensor/actuator network system, we describe the use of DataTurbine streaming middleware. DataTurbine enables management of real-time streaming data and provides persistent local storage for resilience to unreliable links. Here, we discuss DataTurbine's use in interconnected realtime sensor/actuator networks for closed-loop control scenarios. We describe how sensor/actuator networks and distributed real-time data centers can be interconnected with Java client applications using the DataTurbine API to accomplish closed-loop sensing, inference, control, and actuation in a test-bed cyber-ecological system, as well as discussing challenges and future work.

Power and performance tradeoffs are critical and challenging issues faced by cloud service providers (CSPs) while managing their data centers. On the one hand, CSPs strive to reduce power consumption of their data centers to not only decrease their energy costs but to also reduce adverse impact on the environment. On the other hand, CSPs must deliver performance expected by the applications hosted in their cloud in accordance with predefined Service Level Agreements (SLAs). Not doing so will lead to loss of customers and thereby major revenue losses for the CSPs. Addressing these dual set of challenges is hard for the CSPs because power management and performance assurance are conflicting objectives, particularly in the context of multi-tenant cloud systems where multiple virtual machines (VMs) may be hosted on a single physical server. The problem becomes even harder when real-time applications are hosted in these VMs. To address these challenges and make appropriate tradeoffs, we present iPlace, which is an intelligent and tunable power-and performance-aware VM placement middleware. The placement strategy is based on a two-level artificial neural network which predicts (1) CPU usage at the first level, and (2) power consumption and performance of a host machine at the second level that uses the predicted CPU usage. The efficacy of iPlace is evaluated in the context of a VM consolidation algorithm that is applied to running virtual machines and host machines in a private cloud.

Service oriented Architectures and service-centric models arose in the last years as a standard de-facto in IT enterprises for offering practically any kind of services to users world-wide. Heterogeneity (of operating systems, programming languages, software and hardware infrastructures etc.) and transparency (for users) are the key issues of the actual trends in developing and providing services. In particular Cloud-based models provide means for realizing and distributing everything-asa-service, including infrastructures, hardware and software platforms and services. Even if at the moment Service-centric models and technologies are mature in the IT scenario, Composition, analysis and validation of Cloud services is an open research challenge. In this work we describe a methodology based on Multi-Agent Models which allows for description, composition and verification of requirements of Cloud-based services. The methodology uses a modeling profile able to describe services as agents in a multi-agent environment and it is based on Model Driven Engineering (MDE) techniques. The proposed methodology includes a verification process for requirements that exploits formal methods during the whole life cycle of services. An example of the application of the proposed techniques will be reported also.

The pervasiveness of handheld and mobile devices with sophisticated user interfaces and processing hardware has opened the door of ubiquitous computing to electromagnetic field modeling software. This paper reports our first implementation of the two-dimensional shunt-node Transmission Line Matrix (TLM) algorithm for Windows 8.1, a newly released operating environment that can run on a spectrum of computing hardware, from handheld devices (smart phones and small tablet pc), to laptop and desktop computers, and all the way to state-of-the-art engineering workstations. The ubiquitous computing strategy and modelling framework in this two-dimensional TLM software package can thus be used to harness computing power from a wide variety of computing hardware for electromagnetic field modelling.

By analyzing the problems and challenges of virtual machine image store system in cloud computing environment, we present a cooperative persistent cache (CoCache) for virtual disks. CoCache takes advantage of the service ability of the cached nodes by providing virtual image data service for other nodes. CoCache can transfer data between nodes in a P2P pattern, for extending data service ability of the system. CoCache is realized in the kernel space of Linux, can support any kind of VMM. Experiments show that CoCache can effectively reduce the cost during virtual machines read data, and promote the service ability of virtual machine storage system. Layer-aware cache policy is proposed specially for improving cache hit rate in the multi-layer and multipath environment.
