A code smell is any part of an application code that might indicate a code or design problem, which makes the application code hard to evolve and maintain. Automatic detection of code smells has been studied to help programmers find which parts of their application codes should be refactored. However, code smells have not been defined in a formal manner. Moreover, existing detection tools are designed for object-oriented applications, but rarely provided for high performance computing (HPC) applications. HPC applications are usually optimized for a particular platform to achieve a high performance, and hence have special code smells called platform-specific code smells (PSCSs). The purpose of this work is to develop a code smell alert system to help programmers find PSCSs of HPC applications to improve the performance portability across different platforms. This paper presents a PSCS alert system that is based on an abstract syntax tree (AST) and XML. Code patterns of PSCSs are defined in a formal way using the AST information represented in XML. XML Path Language (XPath) is used to describe those patterns. The evaluation results obtained by using real applications show that the proposed system can alert potential PSCSs to programmers.

Cloud computing provides a new paradigm for resource utilization and sharing. However, the reliability problems, like system failures, often happen in cloud systems and bring enormous loss. Trace-oriented monitoring is an important runtime method to improve the reliability of cloud systems. In this paper, we propose to bring runtime verification into trace-oriented monitoring, to facilitate the specification of monitoring requirements and to improve the efficiency of monitoring cloud systems. Based on a data set collected from a cloud storage system in a real environment, we validate our approach by monitoring the critical properties of the storage system. The preliminary experimental results indicate the promise of our approach.

New dedicated hardware architecture for object tracking preprocessing optimized and implemented in FPGA is proposed. It calculates the background image and dual form foreground image while reducing noise in the process. Used algorithms are optimized, the number of mathematical operations are reduced and multiplications are eliminated. 1280 x 1024 pixels optimized multiplier less hardware implementation is composed of 5 small dedicated architectures inter connected by multiplexers and internal registers. The proposed architecture is easily scalable. It is oriented for security tracking applications working in outdoor environment;however, it can be used in any image processing applications as a visual data preprocessing stage. It is resolution and frame rate independent and suitable for all high resolution and multiple camera systems. Optimization for FPGA makes it also suitable for reconfigurable computing and reconfigurable systems.

FLLOP (FETI Light Layer On top of PETSc) is a novel solver for linear systems and more general quadratic programming problems. It connects quadratic programming algorithms with FETI domain decomposition methods that bring high parallel scalability and at the same time high accuracy and robustness needed in engineering applications. According to its name, FLLOP forms an extension of the renowned PETSc software framework for parallel numerical solution of partial differential equations. It can be thus adopted by PETSc users with relative ease. The above-mentioned facts makes FLLOP a unique project. It now forms a solver part of our emerging PERMON toolbox for parallel, Efficient, Robust, Modular, object-oriented, Numerical simulations. We introduce one more PERMON tool, PermonCube, which serves as a benchmark generation tool for FLLOP in massively parallel environment.

Developing efficient, scalable and reconfigurable supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) systems presents a unique set of challenges inherent in the development of distributed computer architectures, algorithms, protocols and procedures for large-scale networked industrial automation applications. A research project on dataflow automation system architecture is presented exploring the research and engineering issues related to the development of computer architecture for the next generation distributed supervision and control systems that exploits and leverages dataflow computation model. Many big data applications receive and process data in real time. These data, also known as data streams, are generated continuously and processed online in a low latency manner. Data stream is prone to change dramatically in volume, since its workload may have a variation of several orders between peak and valley periods. Fully provisioning resources for stream processing to handle the peak load is costly, while over-provisioning is wasteful when to deal with lightweight workload. Cloud computing emphasizes that resource should be utilized economically and elastically. An open question is how to allocate query task adaptively to keeping up the input rate of the data stream. Previous work focuses on using either local or global capacity information to improve the cluster CPU resource utilization, while the bandwidth utilization which is also critical to the system throughput is ignored or simplified. In this paper, we formalize the operator placement problem considering both the CPU and bandwidth usage, and introduce the Elastic Allocator. The Elastic Allocator uses a quantitative method to evaluate a nodes capacity and bandwidth usage, and exploit both the local and global resource information to allocate the query task in a graceful manner to achieve high resource utilization. The experimental results and a simple prototype built on top of Storm finally demonstrate that Elastic Allocator is adaptive and feasible in cloud computing environment, and has an advantage of improving and balancing system resource utilization.

Contact determination between near colliding objects is one of crucial issues in virtual environment simulation for nearly accurate collision detection system such as in medical simulation, computer games, and engineering visualization. The contact determination technique consists of distance computation, point of contact and depth penetration phase. It requires information of object direction toward another object that move towards another object that is in opposite direction;resulting in an intersection. The main problem is caused by complex calculations involved in distance approximation resulting speed and efficiency in collision reporting deterioration. The proposed technique starts by first identifying the nearest triangle of corresponding objects that is going to be intersected with another triangle that are bound with an Axis Aligned Bounding-Box (AABB) for whole object. Then, we need to find the parallel line distribution created by each axis of AABB for each triangle. Three sets of testing have been conducted to evaluate and verify the proposed technique with two other common techniques of Lin-Canny and GJK technique. This paper presented our methodology of our solution for computing a single phase collision detection instead of expensive two-phase collision detection algorithm. © 2014 IEEE.

Agent-based modeling and simulations are applied for problems where population-level patterns arise from the interaction of many autonomous individuals. These problems are compute-intensive and excellent candidates for the use of parallel algorithms and architectures. As a cross-platform software development framework for parallel architectures, OpenCL appears as an ideal tool to implement such algorithms. However, OpenCL does not natively support object-oriented development, which most of the toolkits and frameworks used to build agent-based models require. The present work describes an OpenCL implementation of an existing agent-based model, simulating populations of the Anopheles gambiae mosquito, one of the most important vectors of malaria in Africa. Discussed are the methods and techniques used to overcome the design challenges, which arise when transitioning from an object-oriented program to an efficient OpenCL implementation. In particular, the parallelism inside the program has been maximized, dynamic divergent branching was reduced, and the number of data transfers between the OpenCL host and device has been minimized as far as possible. Even though our implementation was designed for this specific use case, the approach can be generalized to other contexts, as most agent-based point models would benefit from the same basic design decisions that we took for our implementation. Comparisons between the object-oriented and the OpenCL implementation illustrate that using an OpenCL approach offers two important performance benefits: an overall simulation time speedup of up to 576 with no measurable loss of accuracy, and better scalability as the agent-population size increases. The tradeoffs necessary to achieve these performance benefits and the implications for future agent-based software development frameworks are discussed.

Web software development and cloud computing based on Service-oriented Architecture (SOA) represent the latest parallel distributed computing theories, practices, and technologies. As a distributed software development diagram, SOA is being taught in many computer science programs. We do not suggest using SOA to replace the currently taught object-oriented computing paradigm. As SOA is based on object-oriented computing, we suggest teaching SOA as the continuation and extension. At Arizona State University, SOA paradigm is incorporated into our computing Science program since 2006. This paper presents the topics of the related courses and the open resources created for the courses, which are available for public accesses, including textbooks, lecture presentation slides, tests and assignments, software tools, and a repository of components, services and applications.

Most high-performance data processing (aka bigdata) systems allow users to express their computation using abstractions (like map-reduce) that simplify the extraction of parallelism from applications. Most frameworks, however, do not allow users to specify how communication must take place: that element is deeply embedded into the run-time system (RTS), making changes hard to implement. In this work we describe our reengineering of the Watershed system, a framework based on the filter-stream paradigm and focused on continuous stream processing. Like other big-data environments, watershed provided object-oriented abstractions to express computation (filters), but the implementation of streams was an RTS element. By isolating stream functionality into appropriate classes, combination of communication patterns and reuse of common message handling functions (like compression and blocking) become possible. The new architecture even allow the design of new communication patterns, for example, allowing users to choose MPI, TCP or shared memory implementations of communication channels as their problem demand. Applications designed for the new interface showed reductions in code size on the order of 50% and above in some cases, with no significant performance penalty. © 2014 IEEE.
