With the rapid increase of growth and development in cloud computing it is clear to see that it is becoming a common trend within the industry leading to the adoption by businesses and Information Technology (IT) users alike. Coupled with this trend comes a vast amount of academic research into the cloud computing industry covering most aspects but still leaving some untouched. There is, however, a gap in the academic research for this specific area with current studies focusing on very specific performance issues without considering a general overview of performance. This paper demonstrates the importance of understanding the need to benchmark cloud platforms in order to gain a performance overview of the platforms which one may be integrating into a production environment. This paper investigates the performance of two open source cloud platforms, Open Stack and Cloud Stack. The performance testing is strictly focused on the platforms themselves other than the underlying elements. Therefore, the platforms have both been tested on a mutual hyper visor and mutual available resources. The experiment results demonstrate the advantages of performing cloud management platform benchmarking.

SaaS (Software-as-a-Service) as a part of cloud computing is a new approach for software construction, evolution, and delivery. This paper proposes HLA-based SaaS-oriented simulation frameworks where simulation services will be organized into a SaaS framework running in a cloud environment. This SaaS-oriented frameworks can be applied to multiple application domains but illustrated by using HLA (High-Level Architecture). The framework will allow integration of a variety of modules, service-oriented design, flexible customization, multi-granularity simulation, high-performance computing, and system security. It has the potential to reduce system development time, and allows simulation to be run in a cloud environment taking advantages of resources offered by the cloud.

The Notification-oriented Paradigm (NOP)defines a new approach for conception, structuring, and execution of software leading to performance improvements, organization of causal knowledge, and decoupling of programming entities when compared to standard solutions based upon current paradigms, such as the Imperative Paradigm (IP) and the Declarative Paradigm (DP). These paradigms present drawbacks such as waste of processing capacity and coupling among entities, due to their orientation to a monolithic inference mechanism that is based on causal evaluation implemented by means of searches over passive computational entities. The NOP, however, proposes a different approach of structuring software and realization of its inferences, which are based upon small, smart, and decoupled collaborative entities that interact by means of precise notifications. In this way, NOP achieves responsiveness, distributiveness, consistency, and robustness. These features are among the demands of Sentient computing that combines ubiquitous and 'traditional' computing providing monitoring actuation on a given environment. This paper analyzes the NOP applicability to Sentient computing by confronting the demands of the latter with the characteristics of the former. As conclusion, the NOP is considered applicable to this sort of computational system.

A major application area in the computer vision domain is gesture recognition, requiring real-time image classification to respond to human interactions. However, current state-of-the-art high-quality algorithms for image classification do not meet many dynamic real-time requirements. This paper presents the development of M-VCR - a novel approach for improving the reliability of real-time image classification. M-VCR increases the quality of classifications under real-time constraints through the adoption of fast classification algorithms, although these algorithms individually produce lower quality results, utilisation under a 'consensus' approach can achieve results equivalent to those of much higher-quality algorithms. The proposed approach also allows for different algorithms to be utilised in parallel, building on the fault tolerance technique of N-versioning. A significant improvement in image classification is experimentally demonstrated for both the SURF and MSER feature detectors through our integration consensus approach. This improvement is delivered entirely through the integration method without requiring modification of the source algorithms being used.

Embedded control systems such as automotive form large-scale distributed ones which consist of numerous CPUs and devices, including plants and various hardware components. The complexity of such systems has increased for sophisticated control using numerous types of sensor data. Meanwhile, market pressures lead to reducing development periods for the large-scale distributed embedded control systems. A model-based design becomes popular to solve the above problems, especially automotive industries. In this paper, we describe a wide-area distributed integrated test environment based on the model-based design. The key features are communication middleware to enable wide-area distributed test with integrating the programs in widely distributed sites and control program execution with models of multiple abstraction levels in the model-based design. Furthermore, we developed a model agent simulation. Instead of a plant model that might be located and simulated by MATLAB/Simulink in a remote site, a model agent behaves like the model in a local computer. The model agent simulation significantly reduces the test execution time in a prototype evaluation.

Sensor/actuator networks are becoming hierarchical, with wireless ad hoc networks interconnected via infrastructured wireless (e.g. the cellular network) and the Internet. This trend is being driven by new application domains such as cyber-ecological systems. In these systems, sensor/actuator networks and data centers form a geographically-distributed closed-loop system capable of near real-time sensing and actuation of the physical environment. To manage the complexity of this interconnected sensor/actuator network system, we describe the use of Data Turbine streaming middleware. Data Turbine enables management of real-time streaming data and provides persistent local storage for resilience to unreliable links. Here, we discuss Data Turbine's use in interconnected real-time sensor/actuator networks for closed-loop control scenarios. We describe how sensor/actuator networks and distributed real-time data centers can be interconnected with Java client applications using the Data Turbine API to accomplish closed-loop sensing, inference, control, and actuation in a test-bed cyber-ecological system, as well as discussing challenges and future work.

Due to increasing complexity, the design of Industrial Automation Systems are becoming more challenging. In that sense, efforts have been driven to develop Model-Based Systems Engineering tools and methods. Despite recent progress, there are still doubts in terms of the practical use and benefits. The main concerns are related to integration among tools and exchange of information between multidisciplinary artifacts. This paper compares Document-Centric Engineering (CAx tools) and Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) in light of Industrial Automation Systems using a real domain. Therefore, a MBSE compliant method was developed and tested. Commercial tools such as the Eclipse platform and the ModelicaML language were used to perform abstract modeling while COMOS® from Siemens® was used to develop the multidisciplinary artifacts for project documentation. A Java application was developed to integrate component information between the selected environments. The OpenModelica Compiler was integrated to the platform to allow system and component behavior simulation. Tests have shown that the tools involved on this investigation still need further development concerning maturity and exchange of information from abstract models down to domain specific models. On the other hand, MBSE has proven to be an important tool to match different team approaches and concerns, improving team communication using conceptual-wide and abstract symbols. Connecting abstract ModelicaML models to a simulation environment using Modelica led to a better understanding of systems behavior prior to realization and provided an analysis environment for early detection of project errors and operational failures.

By analyzing the problems and challenges of virtual machine image store system in cloud computing environment, we present a cooperative persistent cache (CoCache) for virtual disks. CoCache takes advantage of the service ability of the cached nodes by providing virtual image data service for other nodes. CoCache can transfer data between nodes in a P2P pattern, for extending data service ability of the system. CoCache is realized in the kernel space of Linux, can support any kind of VMM. Experiments show that CoCache can effectively reduce the cost during virtual machines read data, and promote the service ability of virtual machine storage system. Layer-aware cache policy is proposed specially for improving cache hit rate in the multi-layer and multipath environment.

Cloud computing provides a new paradigm for resource utilization and sharing. However, the reliability problems, like system failures, often happen in cloud systems and bring enormous loss. Trace-oriented monitoring is an important runtime method to improve the reliability of cloud systems. In this paper, we propose to bring runtime verification into trace-oriented monitoring, to facilitate the specification of monitoring requirements and to improve the efficiency of monitoring cloud systems. Based on a data set collected from a cloud storage system in a real environment, we validate our approach by monitoring the critical properties of the storage system. The preliminary experimental results indicate the promise of our approach.
