Real-time databases are different from conventional databases in that they have timing constraints on data and on transactions upon the data. The timing constraints of data require that the current status of the real world must be close enough to the state represented by the contents of the database. The timing constraints of transactions are typically expressed in the form of deadline which indicates a certain time in the future by which a transaction must be completed. Conventional data models can not be directly applied to describe the conceptual data model of a real-time database, since there is no mechanism to deal with the representation of timing constraints. A real-time data model should simultaneously satisfy many goals. It should clearly and concisely provide support for specifying timing constraints on data and transactions, semantics of real-time data and real-time transactions, concurrency control mechanisms, and transactions scheduling policies to meet the timing constraints defined by the real-time applications. This paper presents a real-time object-oriented data model and its use in designing real-time extensions to the DB4O database management system. This data model supports expression of time-constrained data, time-constrained transactions, concurrency control mechanisms, and transactions scheduling policies. It also can be integrated easily in existing object-oriented method and permits automatic code generation of all the real-time code of an application.

A key issue in the development of reliable embedded software is the proper handling of reactive control-flow, which typically involves concurrency. Java and its thread concept have only limited provisions for implementing deterministic concurrency. Thus, as has been observed in the past, it is challenging to develop concurrent Java programs without any deadlocks or race conditions. To alleviate this situation, the Synchronous Java (SJ) approach presented here adopts the key concepts that have been established in the world of synchronous programming for handling reactive control-flow. Thus SJ not only provides deterministic concurrency, but also different variants of deterministic preemption. Furthermore SJ allows concurrent threads to communicate with Esterel-style signals. As a case study for an embedded system usage, we also report on how the SJ concepts have been ported to the ARM-based Lego Mindstorms NXT system.

Service-oriented computing (SOC) provides a flexible framework in which applications may be built up from services, often distributed across a network. One of the promises of SOC is that of Dynamic Binding where abstract consumer requests are bound to concrete service instances at runtime, thereby offering a high level of flexibility and adaptability. Existing research has so far focused mostly on the design and implementation of dynamic binding operations and there is little research into a comprehensive evaluation of dynamic binding systems, especially in terms of system failure and dependability. In this paper, we present a novel, extensible evaluation framework that allows for the testing and assessment of a Dynamic Binding System (DBS). Based on a fault model specially built for DBS's, we are able to insert selectively the types of fault that would affect a DBS and observe its behavior. By treating the DBS as a black box and distributing the components of the evaluation framework we are not restricted to the implementing technologies of the DBS, nor do we need to be co-located in the same environment as the DBS under test. We present the results of a series of experiments, with a focus on the interactions between a real-life DBS and the services it employs. The results on the NECTISE Software Demonstrator (NSD) system show that our proposed method and testing framework is able to trigger abnormal behavior of the NSD due to interaction faults and generate important information for improving both dependability and performance of the system under test.

MPI provides high performance parallel file access API called MPI-IO. ROMIO library implements MPI-IO specifications thus providing this facility to C and Fortran programmers. Similarly, object-oriented languages such as Java and C# have adapted MPI specifications and their implementations provide HPC facility to its programmers. These implementations, however, lack parallel file access capability which is very important for large-scale parallel applications. In this paper, we propose a Java based parallel file access API called MPJ-IO and describe its reference implementation. We describe design details and performance evaluation of this implementation. We use JNI calls in our code to utilize functions from ROMIO library. In addition, we highlight the reasons for using JNI calls in our code

In this paper we introduce 'On-The-Fly computing', our vision of future IT services that will be provided by assembling modular software components available on world-wide markets. After suitable components have been found, they are automatically integrated, configured and brought to execution in an On-The-Fly Compute Center. We envision that these future compute centers will continue to leverage three current trends in large scale computing which are an increasing amount of parallel processing, a trend to use heterogeneous computing resources, and - in the light of rising energy cost - energy-efficiency as a primary goal in the design and operation of computing systems. In this paper, we point out three research challenges and our current work in these areas. © 2013 IEEE.

Conventional cache memories act to bridge the gap in speeds between the processor and main memory. However, typical cache memories do not take into account of the specific characteristics of objects-oriented programs. As result it may incur in a performance penalty. In this paper, we discuss how an objects-based cache device can support Java objects. This feature is especially useful in the field of real-time programming, where the determinism for memory cache accesses is a limiting factor. In order to do that, we propose an object layout which splits objects into the same sized blocks;in this way, each cache memory line supports a block. This memory model avoids external fragmentation, while minimizing internal fragmentation. © 2013 IEEE.

This paper summarizes our experiences and findings in teaching the concepts of parallel computing in two undergraduate programming courses and an undergraduate hardware design course. The first is a junior-senior level elective course object-oriented Programming using C++ and Java. The second is a sophomore-level required course on Advanced C Programming. The third course, Introduction to Digital System Design, is also a sophomore-level required course. We will describe how parallel concepts have been integrated in the courses, the assessments, and the results. © 2013 IEEE.

Multicore embedded systems introduce new opportunities and challenges. Scaling of computational power is one of the main reasons for transition to a multicore environment. In most cases parallelization of existing algorithms is time consuming and error prone, dealing with low-level constructs. Migrating principles of object-oriented design patterns to parallel embedded software avoids this. We propose a top-down approach for refactoring existing sequential to parallel algorithms in an intuitive way, avoiding the usage of locking mechanisms. We illustrate the approach on the well known Fast Fourier Transformation algorithm. parallel design patterns, such as Map Reduce, Divide-and-Conquer and Task parallelism assist to derive a parallel approach for calculating the Fast Fourier Transform. By combining these design patterns, a robust and better performing application is obtained.

In general, computing in business is an applied activity with computing serving as a utility to provide leverage for business goals. This is in contrast to a computer science program where computing is more likely an end in itself. The former is pragmatic the latter is more theoretical. Similarly, in high schools computing resources are frequently found in the business departments where students use them purposefully for production rather than as objects of inquiry. Despite the differences, programming is essential to understanding and using computing. Students in business programs tend to be production oriented in that the courses often create artifacts, which are increasingly becoming the foundation for the course outcomes. Alice has demonstrated itself to be a good fit with the programming requirements for the business curriculum as it prepares students for programming in a scripting environment and exposes them to object oriented concepts. Additionally, Alice has the advantage of providing a product - a functioning world to specifications - accessible to a wide audience. Both the adaptability of Alice to a pragmatic approach and the creation of a product reinforce Alice as an introductory environment for computer programming in business. © 2013 ACM.

Numerical simulation of reservoirs is an integral part of geoscientific studies to optimize petroleum recovery. Modern petroleum reservoir simulation requires simulating detailed and computationally expensive geological and physical models. parallel reservoir simulators have the potential to solve larger, more realistic problems than previously possible. To make the solution of these large problems feasible, an efficient parallel implementation of the algorithm is necessary. Such a parallelization of the algorithm requires proper data structures and data layout, some parallel direct and iterative solvers, and some parallel preconditioners. For the development of parallel reservoir simulator, we found the Trilinos Project to be an efficient environment to develop such a complex parallel application. In this paper, we study the development of a parallel 3-phase black oil reservoir simulator on unstructured meshes. Our work is based on the Trilinos project which provides an object-oriented software framework of integrated algorithms for the solution of large-scale complex multi-physics engineering and scientific problems on massively parallel computing platforms. Trilinos addresses two fundamental issues of developing software for these problems: (i) providing a streamlined process and set of tools for development of new algorithmic implementations and (ii) promoting interoperability of independently developed software packages. The ability to rapidly incorporate different packages and methods in the Trilinos framework allowed leveraging implementation of computationally intensive modules and development of reservoir simulator in remarkably short timeframe, reducing the development cycle from months to weeks. Our study illustrates how the combination of very efficient state-of-the-art nonlinear solvers with robust partitioning methods, sparse linear solvers, and preconditioning techniques implemented in the Trilinos framework can be used to prototype new computational
