Business intelligence (BI) is a critical software system employed by the higher management of organizations for presenting business performance reports through Online Analytical Processing (OLAP) functionalities. BI faces sophisticated security issues given its strategic importance for higher management of business entities. Scholars have emphasized on enhanced session, presentation and application layer security in BI, in addition to the usual network and transport layer security controls. This is because an unauthorized user can gain access to highly sensitive consolidated business information in a BI system. To protect a BI environment, a number of controls are needed at the level of database objects, application files, and the underlying servers. In a cloud environment, the controls will be needed at all the components employed in the service-oriented architecture for hosting BI on the cloud. Hence, a BI environment (whether self-hosted or cloud-hosted) is expected to face significant security overheads. In this context, two models for securing BI on a cloud have been simulated in this paper. The first model is based on securing BI using a Unified Threat Management (UTM) cloud and the second model is based on distributed security controls embedded within the BI server arrays deployed throughout the Cloud. The simulation results revealed that the UTM model is expected to cause more overheads and bottlenecks per OLAP user than the distributed security model. However, the distributed security model is expected to pose administrative control effectiveness challenges than the UTM model. Based on the simulation results, it is recommended that BI security model on a Cloud should comprise of network, transport, session and presentation layers of security controls through UTM, and application layer security through the distributed security components. In this paper we introduce “On-The-Fly computing”, our vision of future IT services that will be provided by assembling modular software components available on world-wide markets. After suitable components have been found, they are automatically integrated, configured and brought to execution in an On-The-Fly Compute Center. We envision that these future compute centers will continue to leverage three current trends in large scale computing which are an increasing amount of parallel processing, a trend to use heterogeneous computing resources, and - in the light of rising energy cost - energy-efficiency as a primary goal in the design and operation of computing systems. In this paper, we point out three research challenges and our current work in these areas.

Conventional cache memories act to bridge the gap in speeds between the processor and main memory. However, typical cache memories do not take into account of the specific characteristics of objects-oriented programs. As result it may incur in a performance penalty. In this paper, we discuss how an objects-based cache device can support Java objects. This feature is especially useful in the field of real-time programming, where the determinism for memory cache accesses is a limiting factor. In order to do that, we propose an object layout which splits objects into the same sized blocks; in this way, each cache memory line supports a block. This memory model avoids external fragmentation, while minimizing internal fragmentation.

In this paper we present STELAE, a model-driven test development environment for avionics embedded systems, implemented on top of a real integration test platform. It is the result of an R&D project between two research laboratories and a test solution provider, aiming to introduce model-driven engineering methodologies and technologies for the development of tests. Our work was motivated by the multiplicity of proprietary test languages in this industrial context, which no longer respond to the stakeholder needs. We present the early prototype functionalities (test model definition, automatic code generation and execution) on a case study inspired from real-life. Our feedback on the used technologies concludes this paper.

Service-oriented computing (SOC) provides a flexible framework in which applications may be built up from services, often distributed across a network. One of the promises of SOC is that of Dynamic Binding where abstract consumer requests are bound to concrete service instances at runtime, thereby offering a high level of flexibility and adaptability. Existing research has so far focused mostly on the design and implementation of dynamic binding operations and there is little research into a comprehensive evaluation of dynamic binding systems, especially in terms of system failure and dependability. In this paper, we present a novel, extensible evaluation framework that allows for the testing and assessment of a Dynamic Binding System (DBS). Based on a fault model specially built for DBS's, we are able to insert selectively the types of fault that would affect a DBS and observe its behavior. By treating the DBS as a black box and distributing the components of the evaluation framework we are not restricted to the implementing technologies of the DBS, nor do we need to be co-located in the same environment as the DBS under test. We present the results of a series of experiments, with a focus on the interactions between a real-life DBS and the services it employs. The results on the NECTISE Software Demonstrator (NSD) system show that our proposed method and testing framework is able to trigger abnormal behavior of the NSD due to interaction faults and generate important information for improving both dependability and performance of the system under test.

In this article we introduce the problems and solutions related to the integration of desktop grid middleware in a cloud, in our case the open source SlapOS cloud. We focus on the issues that describe the integration of what we call a recipe (a description of a process related to the automatic deployment of applications) which is one aspect of systems design in service-oriented architecture and Cloud computing. The context of our work is somehow orthogonal to what is done traditionally in the Cloud because we do not rely on virtual machines and there is no data center, in the common sense of the word. We also introduce our environment (IDE) for developing applications, designed for SlapOS. We demonstrate that from the initial deployment model we can take into account not only Web applications, B2B applications... but also grid applications;here a desktop grid middleware that constitutes a case study. Our first contribution focuses on the problems to automatically deploy and install a desktop grid application, on demand, with no administrator intervention. The second contribution focuses on the architectural design of an IDE for the SlapOS cloud and we illustrate our IDE's usage in the context of our use case. © 2013 IEEE.

This paper summarizes our experiences and findings in teaching the concepts of parallel computing in two undergraduate programming courses and an undergraduate hardware design course. The first is a junior-senior level elective course object-oriented Programming using C++ and Java. The second is a sophomore-level required course on Advanced C Programming. The third course, Introduction to Digital System Design, is also a sophomore-level required course. We will describe how parallel concepts have been integrated in the courses, the assessments, and the results.

Particle systems' greatest advantage is well suited for modeling complex fuzzy phenomena, such as explosions, fountain, tornado and fireworks, etc. in 3D graphics. With the increasing requirements on the number of particles and particle-particle interactions, the computational complexity of simulation in particle systems has increased rapidly. Particle systems are traditionally implemented on a general-purpose CPU, and the computational complexity of particle systems limits the number of particles that can be computed at interactive rates. This paper focuses on real-time simulation of large-scale particle systems. We discuss optional integration algorithms based on CUDA (Compute Unified Device Architecture) for both graphic and scientific simulation. The speed of particle systems has been greatly improved, with parallel-core GPUs working in tandem with multi-core CPUs. In order to provide a scalable and portable API library, the object-oriented programming method is adopted to encapsulate the functions of parallel particle system. Results show that our proposed APIs are user-friendly and the parallel implementations are significantly efficient.

Hyperobjects are efficient mechanisms to coordinate accesses to shared variables and data-structures in task-parallel programming models, where each thread can operate on its own coordinated local view of the shared data. Synchronization between local views is restricted to occur at well-defined points in the execution, and can be left to the hyperobject implementation. This paper provides a general model for hyperobjects that does not require programming language or runtime support and may therefore be used with any task-parallel programming system. We show that hyperobjects can be efficiently implemented in a wait-free manner, meaning that all concurrent accesses to a hyperobject are guaranteed to complete in a bounded number of steps. The novel finisher hyperobject presented in this paper provides transitive termination detection for task-parallel programs. It can be used to efficiently implement task synchronization primitives like finish. However, finishers can also be used to manage reference-counted resources, e.g. shared pointers and copy-on-write pointers. Finally, we provide a wait-free variant of the associative reducer hyperobject known from the Cilk++ programming language.
