Cloud workflow allows automating the workflow process through a compilation of known sequences of actions in cloud environment. Current Cloud workflows lack the ability, in the one hand, to capture the contexts during the design phase of Cloud workflows; and in the other hand, to deliver a real-time assistance to help a specific user interact with the system in the selection of the relevant cloud workflow components for his specific need. We propose a context-oriented approach to improve the design phase of cloud workflows. A user-oriented paradigm is presented to make contexts explicit in designing cloud workflows. Context will be made explicit due to the integration of BPEL and Contextual Graphs (CxGs) representation. CxGs representation is the formalism for representing uniformly all the ingredients of design process in cloud workflows, so that users could customize information, formalize their design strategies, and possibly interact with the system to model the cloud workflow. We illustrate our methodology through a case study in virtual screening to testify our investigation study. Finally, we conclude that the method we proposed for making contexts explicit in Cloud workflows could be considered as a successful attempt to address the social and human factors related to the design of Cloud workflows.

Debugging parallel and concurrent applications is well-recognized as a time-consuming task, which often requires a significant part of the application development process. In the context of embedded systems, Multi-Processor-System-on-Chip(MPSoC) architectures feature numerous multicore processors which may be coupled with heterogeneous processors like Digital Signal Processors (DSPs) and/or application-specific accelerators. In this situation, it is important that developers are provided with high-level programming environments able to efficiently exploit these architectures, as well as suitable debugging tools. Dataflow programming models were explicitly designed to program parallel architectures and they have the ability to abstract away heterogeneous computing complexity. In addition, the stream-processing aspect of multimedia algorithms naturally exhibits data-dependency graphs, which simplifies application design and implementation. In this paper, we propose a new approach for interactive debugging of dataflow applications. Going beyond the long-established ability of interactive debuggers to support sequential programming languages, we describe the functionalities they should be able to provide to debug embedded and parallel dataflow applications. Then we demonstrate our solution to this problem with a proof-of-concept debugger targeting the dataflow framework used on an industrial MPSoC platform. We also explain the development challenges we faced during the implementation of this GDB-based debugger and illustrate its efficiency through a case study of a video decoder debugging session.

The design of high-performance Multiprocessor Systems-on-Chip (MPSoCs) has proven to be an attractive challenge in embedded systems design automation. However, the complexity of such designs associated with short time-to-market constraints impose serious limitations on the exploration of different configurations and scenarios on the design space exploration. The use of virtual platforms may decrease the time-to-market of these architectures while providing the means to exploit, debug and verify architectures with different features. In this paper, we present the web-based Simplify framework, an interactive approach for MPSoC exploration using an instruction-accurate Open Virtual Platform (OVP). The framework provides an environment to define both software and hardware properties in an intuitive way, and allows designers to validate the functionality as well as the behavior of the modeled architectures at high-abstraction levels. Based on the simulation reports generated from the framework, designers can perform further design modifications and optimizations, and re-validate the whole system in an efficient way, allowing increased design space exploration. For the evaluation of the proposed approach, a set of benchmark applications extracted from MiBench has been used. They run on five different processors (MIPS32, ARM7, OpenRISC (OR1K), PowerPC32 and Micro Blaze) on both mono and multiprocessor architectures and the experiments show considerable simulation speed-ups to obtain application profiling at instruction-level compared to existing approaches based on tracing.

Chemical computing was initially proposed as an intuitive paradigm to capture the essence of parallel computing. Within such a model, a program is a solution of information-carrying molecules, that, at run time, collide non-deterministically to produce new data. Such a paradigm allowed the programmers to focus on the logic of the problem to be solved in parallel, without having to worry about implementation's considerations. Throughout the years, the model has been enriched with various features related to program structure, control and practicability. More importantly, the model was raised to the higher order, increasing again its expressiveness. With the rise of service-oriented computing, such models have recently regained a lot of interest. They have been shown to provide adequate abstractions to enhance service-oriented architectures with autonomic properties such as self-adaptation, self-healing, or self-organisation. However, the deployment of chemical programs over large scale distributed platforms is still a widely open problem, hindering the model to be leveraged in practice. This paper studies the possibility of building a distributed execution environment for chemical programs. A generic peer-to-peer-based runtime model and distributed algorithms for large scale chemical computing are discussed. To complete this study, a software prototype was developed and experimented over the Grid'5000 test-bed. Experimental performance results are detailed, allowing for a discussion of the feasibility and performance of such a runtime, thus lifting a barrier towards the enactment of the chemical programming model.

Service oriented Architecture (SOA) is a new form of distributed software architecture, which promotes loose-coupling and coarse-granularity. It deploys, composes and calls application components in a distributed way on Internet. The dynamics of Internet environment poses challenge to dynamic service oriented system. The distributive Internet environment requires SOA to be more distributive and self-adaptive, and choreography emphasizes the collaboration between services. Also, more flexible and dynamic software architecture is demanded for service-based software. A strong constraint mechanism which describes architectural limitation of run-time system is needed to make sure the system runs correctly. The main contribution of this paper is a graph grammar based modeling and verification approach for constrained evolution of service-oriented system. System specification described by SOA pattern and structural constraints and their satisfaction checking algorithms are proposed. We have implemented a constrained evolution verification tool that allow us to model runtime SOA, constraints and verify consistency at design-time. Further, a constraint decomposition method towards member services is given for the non-central executable SOA. And we described an adaptive collaboration policy between services to verify consistency when evolution occurs at runtime. A runtime environment's architecture for constraint evolution service oriented system is also proposed. © 2012 IEEE.

In spite of the growing interest for grids and cloud infrastructures among scientific communities and the availability of such facilities at large-scale, achieving high performance in production environments remains challenging due to at least four factors: the low reliability of very large-scale distributed computing infrastructures, the performance overhead induced by shared facilities, the difficulty to obtain fair balance of all user jobs in such an heterogeneous environment, and the complexity of large-scale distributed applications deployment. All together, these difficulties make infrastructure exploitation complex, and often limited to experts. This paper introduces a pragmatic solution to tackle these four issues based on a service-oriented methodology, the reuse of existing middleware services, and the joint exploitation of local and distributed computing resources. Emphasis is put on the integrated environment ease of use. Results on an actual neuroscience application show the impact of the environment setup in terms of reliability and performance. Recommendations and best practices are derived from this experiment. © 2012 IEEE.

Testing Web services performance and their Fault Tolerance Mechanisms (FTMs) are crucial for the development of today's applications. Testing the performance and FTMs of composed service systems is hard to measure at design time because service instability is often caused by the nature of the network. Using a real internet environment for testing is difficult to set up and control. We have developed a fault injection toolkit that emulates a WAN within a LAN environment between composed service components and offers full control over the emulated environments in addition to the ability to inject network-related and application specific faults. The tool also generates background workloads on the tested system for producing more realistic results. We describe an experiment that has been carried out to test the impact of fault tolerance protocols deployed at a service client by using our fault injection toolkit. © 2012 IEEE.

Virtualisation is a prevalent technology in current computing. Among the many aspects of virtualisation, it can be employed to reduce hardware costs by server consolidation, implement "green computing" by reducing power consumption and as an underpinning process for cloud computing enabling the creation of a range of virtual networks and virtual supercomputers. This paper presents performance measurements for a cloning system known as iVIC that has been developed in Beihang University, China. In an extension to earlier work, it focuses on the factors the limit the number of clones that can be successfully started. IVIC creates clusters of virtual computers that can communicate with each other through virtual switch mechanisms. The virtual switches can also allow communication between the clone environment and the physical world. Testing has been undertaken to identify the limiting factors for creating and starting numbers of clone machines, measure the power consumption of the physical system and the computational performance capability of the clones. © 2012 IEEE.

Nowadays multicore systems have been used in real-time applications such as robots. In robots, imprecise tasks such as image processing tasks are required to detect and avoid objects. However, existing real-time operating systems have evaluated multiprocessor real-time scheduling algorithms in Liu and Lay land's model and have not evaluated those in the imprecise computation model. This paper performs experimental evaluations of global and partitioned semi-fixed-priority scheduling algorithms in the extended imprecise computation model on multicore systems. Experimental results show that semi-fixed-priority scheduling has comparable overhead to fixed-priority scheduling. In addition, global semi-fixed-priority scheduling has lower overhead than partitioned semi-fixed-priority scheduling. © 2012 IEEE.

This paper introduces an architecture of parallel remote sensing image processing software, with advantages including high scalability, platform-independence, language-independence, and so on. It helps achieve high-performance computing in this field. MPI is used as the fundamental distributed message passing protocol. An object-oriented wrapper, *** library, is used in the software to manipulate MPI. Open Source libraries such as GDAL and Open-CV are studied in this paper to help develop detailed image processing programs and implement classification algorithms. A number of experiments are conducted to test the parallel classification programs. The results indicate that in most cases the performance is significantly improved, especially for multi-spectral remote sensing image classification, in which a highest speed-up of 3.92 is reached.
