In pervasive computing system, the increasing dynamic and complexity of software and hardware resources and frequentative interaction among function components make fault-tolerant design very challenging. In this paper, we propose a novel self-adaptive fault-tolerant mechanism for a dynamic pervasive computing environment such as mobile ad hoc network. In our approach, the self-adaptive fault-tolerant mechanism is dynamically built according to various types of detected faults based on continuous monitoring and analysis of the component states. We put forward the architecture of fault-tolerant system and the policy-based fault-tolerant scheme, which adopts three-dimensional array of core features to capture spatial and temporal variability and the Event-Condition-Action rules. The mentioned mechanism has been designed and implemented as self-adaptive fault-tolerant middleware, shortly called SAFTM, on a preliminary prototype for a dynamic pervasive computing environment such as mobile ad hoc network. We have performed the experiments to evaluate the efficiency of the fault-tolerant mechanism. The results of the experiments show that the performance of the self-adaptive fault tolerant mechanism is realistic. © 2012 IEEE.

Many recent applications involve processing and analyzing uncertain data. Recently, several research efforts have addressed answering skyline queries efficiently on massive uncertain datasets. However, the research lacks methods to compute these queries on uncertain data, where each dimension of the uncertain object is represented as an interval or an exact value. In this paper, we extensively study the problem of skyline query on these interval based uncertain objects, which has never been studied before. We first model the problem of querying the skylines on interval datasets. Typically, we address two efficient algorithms with I/O optimal for the conventional interval skyline queries and constrained interval skyline queries, respectively. Extensive experiments demonstrate the efficiency of all our proposed algorithms. © 2012 IEEE.

Dependability is a critical concern in provisioning services in Cloud computing environments. This is true when considering reliability, an attribute of dependability that is a critical and challenging problem in a Cloud context [2]. Fault-tolerance is one means to attain reliability, and is typically implemented by using some form of diversity. Federated Cloud, which is an emerging Cloud paradigm that orchestrates multiple Clouds, is able to implement environmental diversity for Cloud applications with relative ease and minimal additional cost to the consumer due to its inherent design. Real-Time Applications (RTAs) can benefit from deploying fault-tolerant schemes to fulfill deadlines in the presence of faults as they enable the provisioning of correct service in the event of a component in the application failing. However, this diversity can potentially become an issue when designing dynamically scalable fault-tolerant RTAs in a federated Cloud environment while also fulfilling QoS demands. In particular, building fault-tolerant RTAs by using the diversity of the Virtual Machine (VM) configurations and of the underlying Cloud infrastructure can have a negative impact on the ability to fulfill deadlines whilst still allowing the application to dynamically provision VMs with minimal human interaction. This paper identifies a number of characteristics that affect the ability for a RTA to fulfill specified deadlines in a federated Cloud environment as a result of deploying environment diverse fault-tolerant schemes. Furthermore we have designed and performed initial experiments using a real world Cloud federation to justify the feasibility of this problem. Results demonstrate that deploying RTAs in a federated Cloud environment can potentially increase the rate of deadline violations. © 2012 IEEE.

Along with the development of multicore architectures and cloud computing, concurrent programming and computation becomes a huge challenge for application developers. Distributed environment turns into complexity and unpredictability. So it is important to improve programming models on language level to make it possible for programmers unfamiliar with distributed systems to build large-scale applications. Erlang is an actor-based functional programming language that provides language level elements for concurrency. It has capability of describing large quantities of concurrent actions by multiple-process, which communicates asynchronously by sending and receiving messages. But it lacks of data structures and mechanism of language level for inherent concurrent units with a simple way of interaction, which may impede programmers in concurrent programming. Comparing with other computing element models such as Active object and Concurrent Agent, we extend Erlang with a new computing element called "EIC_Unit" and a way of interaction by "futures". It makes programmers to develop concurrent applications more easily and convenient in a distributed environment.

Compared to the conventional physical cluster, the virtual cluster technology has features such as flexible configuration, easy management and high system security, which provides users with an easily customized computing environment. Virtual machine image files as the most important stored objects in the virtual computing environment include all the information about the whole life cycle of virtual machine. The storage of the virtual machine images is an important part of virtual computing. There are mainly two ways to store the images, which include local storage and networking storage. This paper proposes a mechanism to manage the distributed image files to support the virtual computing environment. It uses the computing nodes` local storage as a chunk server in a distributed file system, and regards the distribution of the image files as a primary factor to choose the computing node to deploy virtual machine and to implement a backup mechanism of distributed images based on historical records of image files. Functional test and performance test results show that it can effectively support the virtual computing environment and has great values of applications and research.

As Cyber-physical System (CPS) is gaining more and more concerns recently, the requirements modeling becomes a critical issue in CPS. In this paper we propose a requirements model for CPS by extending the Four-Variable Model. Through extension, the requirements model deals with complex network environment that CPS are facing, and views timing and position requirements as functional requirements. Besides the framework of this model, we also give a guiding process on how to select corresponding environment variables in this model. An example on one-way traffic light is illustrated to show the effectiveness of our approach.

The increasing interest in the Internet of Things (IoT) has brought lots of opportunities and challenges to researchers. Cyber-space and physical world are more and more amalgamated by smart devices with networking capability. Making appropriate adaptations to satisfy new processing requirements is necessary for the extensive service in such an environment. In this paper, we propose a three-layer architecture for IoT: the sensor layer, processing layer and mining layer. We adopt a new design approach for the information-processing layer which focuses on five aspects: exchanging data format, data entity design, the method invocation style, the event decoupling and massive data processing. Our approach has been applied to an environmental protection system which is being used in more than 200 monitoring stations in Shanghai. There are 7 kinds of environmental information to be monitored and more than 70 million data items to be processed by this system every day. © 2012 IEEE.

As the foundation of cloud computing, Server consolidation allows multiple computer infrastructures running as virtual machines in a single physical node. It improves the utilization of most kinds of resource but memory under x86 architecture. Because of inaccurate memory usage estimate and the lack of memory resource management, there is much service performance degradation in data centers, even though they have occupied a large amount of memory. Furthermore, memory becomes insufficient for a physical server when a lot of virtual machines depend on it. In order to improve this, we present a dynamic memory scheduling system called DMSS, which can manage memory resources in server consolidation environments and allocate memory among virtual machines on demand. We have designed and implemented the corresponding memory scheduling policy based on Xen virtualization platform to enhance memory efficiency and achieve service level agreement. The benchmark shows that DMSS can make an accurate and rapid response to memory changes and save more than 30% physical memory with less than 5% performance degradation. DMSS actually brings in economic benefits to cloud service providers because more virtual machines can be accommodated at lower costs. © 2012 IEEE.

Service oriented Architecture (SOA) is a new form of distributed software architecture, which promotes loose-coupling and coarse-granularity. It deploys, composes and calls application components in a distributed way on Internet. The dynamics of Internet environment poses challenge to dynamic service oriented system. The distributive Internet environment requires SOA to be more distributive and self-adaptive, and choreography emphasizes the collaboration between services. Also, more flexible and dynamic software architecture is demanded for service-based software. A strong constraint mechanism which describes architectural limitation of run-time system is needed to make sure the system runs correctly. The main contribution of this paper is a graph grammar based modeling and verification approach for constrained evolution of service-oriented system. System specification described by SOA pattern and structural constraints and their satisfaction checking algorithms are proposed. We have implemented a constrained evolution verification tool that allow us to model runtime SOA, constraints and verify consistency at design-time. Further, a constraint decomposition method towards member services is given for the non-central executable SOA. And we described an adaptive collaboration policy between services to verify consistency when evolution occurs at runtime. A runtime environment's architecture for constraint evolution service oriented system is also proposed.

Testing Web services performance and their Fault Tolerance Mechanisms (FTMs) are crucial for the development of today's applications. Testing the performance and FTMs of composed service systems is hard to measure at design time because service instability is often caused by the nature of the network. Using a real internet environment for testing is difficult to set up and control. We have developed a fault injection toolkit that emulates a WAN within a LAN environment between composed service components and offers full control over the emulated environments in addition to the ability to inject network-related and application specific faults. The tool also generates background workloads on the tested system for producing more realistic results. We describe an experiment that has been carried out to test the impact of fault tolerance protocols deployed at a service client by using our fault injection toolkit.
