Multicore processors can deliver higher performance than single-core processors by exploiting thread level parallelism (TLP): applications are split into independent threads, each of which is mapped into a different core, reducing the execution time and potentially its worst-case execution time (WCET). Unfortunately, inter-thread interferences generated by simultaneous accesses to shared resources from different threads may completely destroy the performance benefits brought by TLP. This paper proposes a software/hardware cache partitioning approach that reduces the inter-thread memory interferences generated in hard real-time software-pipelined parallel applications. Our results show that our approach effectively reduces memory interferences, while still guaranteeing a predictable timing behaviour, achieving a WCET estimation reduction of 28% for a software pipelined version of the LU decomposition application with respect to the single-threaded version. © 2011 IEEE.

Cloud computing technologies play an increasingly important role in realizing data-intensive applications by offering a virtualized compute and storage infrastructure that can scale on demand. A programming model that has gained a lot of interest in this context is MapReduce, which simplifies processing of large-scale distributed data volumes, usually on top of a distributed file system layer. In this paper we report on a self-configuring adaptive framework for developing and optimizing data-intensive scientific applications on top of Cloud and Grid computing technologies and the Hadoop framework. Our framework relies on a MAPE-K loop, known from autonomic computing, for optimizing the configuration of data-intensive applications at three abstraction layers: the application layer, the MapReduce layer, and the resource layer. By evaluating monitored resources, the framework configures the layers and allocates the resources on a per job basis. The evaluation of configurations relies on historic data and a utility function that ranks different configurations regarding to the arising costs. The optimization framework has been integrated in the Vienna Grid environment (VGE), a service-oriented application development environment for providing applications on HPC systems, clusters and Clouds as services. An experimental evaluation of our framework has been undertaken with a data-analysis application from the field of molecular systems biology. © 2011 IEEE.

A new distributed program graphical design environment is described in the paper. It is oriented towards designing program execution control based on a built-in system infrastructure which enables easy global application states monitoring in systems based on multicore processors. Two aspects of global application control design are covered. First is the global control flow in programs at the level of processes and threads. The second is the asynchronous control of internal process and thread behavior. The proposed control infrastructure is based on structural program elements called synchronizers organized at the process and thread levels to collect state information, evaluate control predicates on global states and send signals to application program threads and processes to stimulate global control actions. The paper presents principles of the application program graphical design and programming methods to implement global control at the level of threads. © 2011 IEEE.

Large scale realistic simulations of malware on mobile wireless networks have recently become an increasingly important application of high-performance computing. We propose EpiCure - an individual-based, scalable high performance computing oriented modeling environment to study malware propagation over realistic mobile networks. It is designed specifically to work on commodity cluster architectures. EpiCure runs extremely fast for realistic instances that involve: (i) large time-varying networks consisting of millions of heterogeneous individuals with time varying interaction neighborhoods, (ii) dynamic interactions between disease propagation, device behavior, and the exogenous interventions, and (iii) large number of replicated runs necessary for statistically sound estimates about the stochastic epidemic evolution. We find that EpiCure runs several orders of magnitude faster than another comparable simulation tool while delivering similar results. Beyond simple compute speed, EpiCure has been designed so that analysts can easily represent a range of interventions leading to improved human productivity and ease of use. This is an increasingly important metric in high performance computing. We illustrate EpiCure using three case studies that bring out the novel features of EpiCure. © 2011 IEEE.

Radio frequency identification (RFID) is a technology where a reader device can "sense" the presence of a close by object by reading a tag device attached to the object. To guarantee the coverage quality, multiple RFID readers can be deployed in the given region. In this paper, we consider the problem of activation schedule for readers in a multi-reader environment. In particular, we try to design a schedule for readers to maximize the number of served tags per time-slot while avoiding various interferences. We first develop a centralized algorithm under the assumption that different readers may have different interference and interrogation radius. Next, we propose a novel algorithm which does not need any location information of the readers. Finally, we extend the previous algorithm in distributed manner in order to suit the case where no central entity exists. We conduct extensive simulations to study the performances of our proposed algorithm. And our evaluation results corroborate our theoretical analysis. © 2011 IEEE.

We introduce Join Voyager - a language that can be used to program a Peer to Peer network using object oriented techniques and Join methods. In Join Voyager any object can migrate to any node (peer) of the underlying network. The language provides strong mobility, i.e. the ability to capture and transfer the full execution state of mobile objects at any time. objects can communicate by sending and receiving messages in object oriented style. As in Join Java or Polyphonic C#, both synchronous and asynchronous messages are supported. The paper presents the design rationales and a semantic interpreter for Join Voyager. The interpreter is designed with continuations following the discipline of denotational semantics and is implemented in Haskell.

Current distributed computing systems comprising of commodity computers like Network of Workstations (NOW) are obliged to deploy multicore processors to raise their performance. However, because multicore processors were absent when traditional standard programming models and APIs for distributed computing such as MPI and PVM were designed, traditional models are not suitable for programming multicore processors. In this paper, we argue in favor of a powerful programming model called the task-oriented programming model. This model is recently used for programming applications for both multicore processors and distributed computing systems such as computational grids. We argue that because of simplicity and the ability of automatic scaling of applications developed under this model, the task-oriented programming model fits the requirements of programming multicore enabled systems better than traditional models like message passing or multi-threading.

An approach in advancing the field of medical robotics is via a more efficient preparation of robotic surgical intervention using accurate simulation. Our intra-operative virtual system for robotic tracheal-oesophageal puncture is modeled using an object oriented method. The interaction between rigid tools and flexible organs is simulated with finite element method codes integrated within the framework of multi-body dynamics codes. We investigate LogP and MLogP models for multi-core CPU computing, and propose Topology Independent Model (TIN) model for a heterogeneous computing system, which mimics parallel processing with multi-core CPU and GPU, to provide the required computational power for tool-tissue simulation.

Current embedded systems offer enough performance to integrate on a single chip jobs that required several distributed devices in the past. The execution environment of such an integrated architecture should satisfy key requirements, such as, temporal predictability, fault containment or flexibility. In this paper we present these requirements and argue about the suitability of embedded hypervisors and a time-triggered Multi-Processor System-on-Chip (MPSoC) to implement them. We conclude that the MPSoC approach satisfies more naturally the mentioned specification. It shows more predictable behaviors and inherent fault containment properties that eases the development and certification process (e.g., IEC 61508) of integrated embedded systems.
