We consider the problem of implementing a security protocol in such a manner that secrecy of sensitive data is not jeopardized. The implementation is assumed to take place in the context of a language named Join Voyagers used to program a Peer-to-Peer network using object oriented techniques and Join methods. A mobile agent is an object that can migrate throughout a heterogeneous network of computers, under its own control, in order to perform tasks using resources of these nodes. We develop a basic architecture to express security protocols for communication and strong migration, or to enforce cryptographic primitives based on SPI calculus. These protocols rely on cryptography and on communication channels with properties like authenticity and privacy. This article will present also a series of aspects related to mobile code security, namely the protection of hosts receiving a malicious code and the protection of a mobile code within a malicious host from our programmable Peer-to-Peer network.

Web software development and cloud computing based on Service-oriented Architecture (SOA) and Service-oriented computing (SOC) represent the modern software engineering theories, practices, and technologies. As an architecture-driven computing paradigm, SOA and SOC are mature and are becoming the major paradigm for software development. SOA and SOC should be taught in all computer science and computer engineering programs. We do not suggest using SOC to replace the currently taught object-oriented computing (OOC) paradigm. As SOC is based on OOC, we suggest to teaching SOC as the continuation and extension of OOC. At Arizona State University, SOA and SOC paradigm is incorporated into our computing Science and Software Engineering programs since 2006. This paper presents the topics of the related courses and the open resources created for the courses, which are available for public accesses, including textbooks, lecture presentation slides, tests and assignments, software tools, a repository of sample services and applications, and tutorials of using tools and the cloud computing environment for service hosting and deployment.

Multicore processors can deliver higher performance than single-core processors by exploiting thread level parallelism (TLP): applications are split into independent threads, each of which is mapped into a different core, reducing the execution time and potentially its worst-case execution time (WCET). Unfortunately, inter-thread interferences generated by simultaneous accesses to shared resources from different threads may completely destroy the performance benefits brought by TLP. This paper proposes a software/hardware cache partitioning approach that reduces the inter-thread memory interferences generated in hard real-time software-pipelined parallel applications. Our results show that our approach effectively reduces memory interferences, while still guaranteeing a predictable timing behaviour, achieving a WCET estimation reduction of 28% for a software pipelined version of the LU decomposition application with respect to the single-threaded version.

Modelica is a modern, strongly typed, declarative, equation-based, and object-oriented (EOO) language for modeling and simulation of complex cyber-physical systems. Major features are: ease of use, visual design of models with combination of lego-like predefined model building blocks, ability to define model libraries with reusable components, support for modeling and simulation of complex applications involving parts from several application domains, and many more useful facilities. This paper gives an overview of some aspects of the Modelica language and the OpenModelica environment - the most complete Modelica open-source tool for modeling, simulation, and development of Modelica applications. Special features are MetaModeling for efficient model transformations, the ModelicaML profile for UML-Modelica cyber-physical hardware-software modeling, as well as generation of parallel code for multi-core architectures.

In this paper we describe an architecture for a Distributed Network Management System (NMS) for large, geographically spread, heterogeneous networks, integrating Map Reduce framework along with the prevalent Service oriented Architecture (SOA). MapReduce is the software framework popularized by Google to support distributed computing on large data sets on clusters of computers. In a nutshell, it is a way to take a big task and divide it into discrete tasks that can be done in parallel. This new architecture enhances the robustness, scalability and reliability of NMS. We also discuss the implementation of this architecture using Hadoop, the open source implementation of MapReduce Framework.

A new distributed program graphical design environment is described in the paper. It is oriented towards designing program execution control based on a built-in system infrastructure which enables easy global application states monitoring in systems based on multicore processors. Two aspects of global application control design are covered. First is the global control flow in programs at the level of processes and threads. The second is the asynchronous control of internal process and thread behavior. The proposed control infrastructure is based on structural program elements called synchronizers organized at the process and thread levels to collect state information, evaluate control predicates on global states and send signals to application program threads and processes to stimulate global control actions. The paper presents principles of the application program graphical design and programming methods to implement global control at the level of threads.

The need of task-adapted and complete information for the management of resources is a well known issue in Grid computing. Globus Toolkit 4 (GT4) includes the Monitoring and Discovery System component (MDS4) to carry out resource management. The Common Information Model (CIM) provides a standard conceptual view of the managed environment. This work improves the MDS4 functionality through the use of CIM, with the aim of providing a unified, standard representation of the Grid resources. Since a practical CIM model may contain a large volume of information, a new Index Service that represents the CIM information through Java instances is presented. In addition, a solution that keeps data in persistent storage has also been implemented. The evaluation of the proposed solutions achieves encouraging results, with an important reduction in memory consumption, a good scalability when the number of instances increases, and with a reasonable response time.

Biological Sequence Comparison is an important operation in Bioinformatics that is often used to relate organisms. Smith and Waterman proposed an exact algorithm (SW) that compares two sequences in quadratic time and space. Due to high computing and memory requirements, SW is usually executed on HPC platforms such as multicore clusters and CellBEs. Since HPC architectures exhibit very different hardware characteristics, porting an application between them is an error-prone time-consuming task. BSP++ is an implementation of BSP that aims to reduce the effort to write parallel code. In this paper, we propose and evaluate a parallel BSP++ strategy to execute SW in multiple platforms like MPI, OpenMP, MPI/OpenMP, CellBE and MPI/CellBE. The results obtained with real DNA sequences show that the performance of our versions is comparable to the ones in the literature, evidencing the appropriateness and flexibility of our approach.

Teaching Software Engineering must adopt new approaches to respond to the rapid globalization of software development. This puts pressure on instructors to select focused course contents to prepare students for working in global environments. This paper presents an innovative approach to teaching Software Engineering and which emphasizes the learning of project managements skills as well as the most important software development concepts in an environment which simulates a geographically distributed environment. Our approach is to synchronize class teaching with the development of real-world software projects in a setting designed to simulate geographically distributed working environments. The theoretical part of the course is object-oriented-centric, whereas the practical part is the larger part and is facilitated through two projects and which are designed to simulate real-world environments with global customers where students from different courses collaborate to play different roles. The projects give students skills in using the Agile and Spiral models.

Cloud computing technologies play an increasingly important role in realizing data-intensive applications by offering a virtualized compute and storage infrastructure that can scale on demand. A programming model that has gained a lot of interest in this context is MapReduce, which simplifies processing of large-scale distributed data volumes, usually on top of a distributed file system layer. In this paper we report on a self-configuring adaptive framework for developing and optimizing data-intensive scientific applications on top of Cloud and Grid computing technologies and the Hadoop framework. Our framework relies on a MAPE-K loop, known from autonomic computing, for optimizing the configuration of data-intensive applications at three abstraction layers: the application layer, the MapReduce layer, and the resource layer. By evaluating monitored resources, the framework configures the layers and allocates the resources on a per job basis. The evaluation of configurations relies on historic data and a utility function that ranks different configurations regarding to the arising costs. The optimization framework has been integrated in the Vienna Grid environment (VGE), a service-oriented application development environment for providing applications on HPC systems, clusters and Clouds as services. An experimental evaluation of our framework has been undertaken with a data-analysis application from the field of molecular systems biology.
