In developing multi-UAV(Unmanned Aerial Vehicle) system, a simulation environment is essential to verify the functionalities of the whole system with higher productivity and reduced risks of accidents. Simulations of multi-UAV systems are usually accomplished by using distributed systems where multiple standalone simulators are connected via a network. Thus, in order to achieve an improved reality in such distributed simulation environments, the whole multi-UAV simulator should be guaranteed real-time and synchronized behaviors among the connected systems. In this paper, we discuss about the necessity of two important real-time features, i.e., the periodicity of computations and the clock synchronization among standalone simulators. We also propose an architecture based on TMO(Time-triggered and Message-triggered object) model as a multi-UAV simulation platform with our preliminary experimental results showing its potential feasibilities. © 2010 IEEE.

HPE is a platform of parallel components that complies to the # component model, whose components are intrinsically parallel. This paper describes the design of a new CCA framework based on HPE, aimed to reconcile distribution and parallelism of components. Besides exposing the essential differences between the two platforms, the new framework has a set of features that distinguishes it from other CCA frameworks. © 2010 IEEE.

All along which combinatory parsers have been propounded, the primary idea has based on the pure functional programming;besides, the implementation methods with pure functional ideas has brought about some limitation on the programming environment. Like other combinatory parsers, we use functional structures and specially High Order Functions in order to design V Parser;however, the functions, which are used in the V parser, have a different structure in comparison with others;and consequently, a number of remarkable merits are provided. For instance, this parser is by far the simplest and easiest to understand among other combinatory parsers and it has the possibility of parallel processing for choice combinators. On the other hand, the usage of object-oriented will lead to avoid of restrictions of pure functional programming. Moreover, V Parser has the ability of generating Abstract Syntax Tree in an integrated way and the output of Parsing will be a concrete (conceptual) object. We are going to explain the structure of V parser in this article.

Highly desirable types of networked multimedia applications should adapt to changes in the environmental conditions in which they operate, such as communication bandwidth, available memory, and battery lifetime, while providing the best possible quality of service (QoS). In this paper we present a software architecture that facilitates the development of adaptive networked multimedia applications which meet this requirement. The proposed software architecture is based on the Time-triggered Message-triggered object (TMO) programming scheme and it is implemented as a thin layer on top of the TMO Support Middleware (TMOSM). The new layer, called the QoS Adaptation Support Layer (QASL), includes monitoring and runtime reconfiguration facilities that allow us to easily incorporate QoS-adaptation capabilities into TMO-based multimedia applications. In addition, we introduce a novel, practical approach for establishing the QoS configurations that guide the adaptive behavior of a networked multimedia application. A QoS configuration contains a set of parameters that specify the quality-related characteristics of the media streams which a receiver expects from a sender. We also present a strategy used in QASL for selecting, from a given set of QoS configurations, an optimal configuration by reflecting currently observed environmental conditions. Finally, the effectiveness of the QoS-adaptation mechanisms implemented in QASL is evaluated with the use of a heterogeneous network based multi-party videoconference application. © 2010 IEEE.

The increase of computational power in embedded systems has allowed integrating together hard real-time tasks and rich applications. Complex SW infrastructures containing both RTOS and GPOS are required to handle this complexity. To optimally map system functionality to the hard-RT SW domain, to the general purpose SW domain or to HW peripherals, early performance evaluations at the first steps of the design process are required. Approximate timed co-simulation has been proposed as a fast solution for system modeling at early design steps. This co-simulation technique allows simulating systems at speed close to functional execution, while considering timing effects. As a consequence, system performance estimations can be obtained early, allowing efficient design space exploration and system refinement. To achieve fast simulation speed, the SW code is pre-annotated with time information. The annotated code is then natively executed, performing what is called native-based co-simulation. Previous native-based simulation environments are not prepared to model multi-OS systems, so the performance evaluation of the different SW domains is not possible. This paper proposes a new embedded system modeling solution considering dual RTOS/GPOS systems. A real Linux-based infrastructure has been modeled an integrated into a state-of-the-art co-simulation environment. The resulting solution is capable of modeling and evaluating all HW and SW system components providing the designer with valuable information for early system optimization and design space exploration. © 2010 IEEE.

As multi-cores arrive for mainstream desktop systems, developers must invest the effort to parallelize their applications. We present parallel Task (short ParaTask), a solution to assist the parallelization of object-oriented applications, with the unique feature of including support for the parallelization of graphical user interface (GUI) applications. In the simple, but common, cases concurrency is introduced with a single keyword. Due to the wide variety of parallelization needs, ParaTask integrates different task types into the same model, provides intuitive support for dependence handling, non-blocking notification, interim progress notification and exception handling in an asynchronous environment as well as supporting a pluggable task scheduling runtime (currently work-sharing, work-stealing and a combination of the two are supported). The performance is compared to traditional Java parallelization approaches using a variety of different workloads.

pALS acronym for parallel Adaptive Learning Search is a computational object oriented framework for the development of parallel and cooperative metaheuristics for solving complex optimization problems. The library exploits the paralellization allowing the deployment of mainly two models: the parallel execution of operators and the execution of separate instances or multi-start models. pALS also allows to include in the design of the problem's solution cooperation strategies such as the islands model for genetic algorithms or the parallel exploration of neighborhoods in metaheuristics derived from local searches, including a broad set of topologies associated with these models. pALS has been successfully used in different optimization problems and has proven to be a flexible, extensible and commanding library to promptly develop prototypes offering a collection of ready to use operators that encompass the nucleus of many metaheuristics including hybrid metaheuristics.

In this paper we present a new approach to distribute tasks connected by causal dependencies within a heterogeneous environment, e.g. several resources communicating with each other or a processor grid. Our approach uses an artificial hormone system for task distribution which is able to meet real-time constraints. Several enhancements of the artificial hormone system are made such as partial suppressing of tasks and distributed task termination.

Multi-cores are the contemporary solution to satisfy high performance and low energy demands in general and embedded computing domains. However, currently available multi-cores are not feasible to be used in safety-critical environments with hard real-time constraints. Hard real-time tasks running on different cores must be executed in isolation or their interferences must be time-bounded. Thus, new requirements also arise for a real-time operating system (RTOS), in particular if the parallel execution of hard real-time applications should be supported. In this paper we focus on the MERASA system software as an RTOS developed on top of the MERASA multi-core processor. The MERASA system software fulfils the requirements for time-bounded execution of parallel hard real-time tasks. In particular we focus on thread control with synchronisation mechanisms, memory management and resource management requirements. Our evaluations show that all system software functions are time-bounded by a worst-case execution time (WCET) analysis.

Autonomic Systems on Chip provision VLSI systems with the capabilities of self-organization, self-healing and self-optimization, thereby allowing them to adapt to their environment and improve their functionality through run-time learning. This paper presents our current status of work on autonomic SoC architectures, beginning with a robust, self-correcting processor data path architecture and progressing to reinforcement machine learning techniques for self-optimization and self-organization at run time. An outlook of our future work and upcoming challenges in regard to autonomic systems on chip is then presented as a basis for discussion at the SORT workshop, and with the organic computing community in general.
