The size and complexity of large-scale distributed embedded systems such as automotive and process controls have increased recently. Sophisticated systems that are safe and environmentally friendly require numerous types of sensor data, which are collected from various devices and sent to computers through networks. To develop such large-scale distributed embedded systems with high quality and productivity, we have developed a virtual execution environment platform. This platform integrates numerous CPU simulators and various device simulators through the network and provides network-wide simulation functionalities. In this paper, we propose a hybrid software execution environment and describe the development and evaluation of the technology element required in its implementation. The hybrid software execution environment integrates virtual and real software execution environments in order to check functional behavior of distributed embedded software in a more realistic environment. In the environment, CPU simulators and device simulators are implemented as Common object Request Broker Architecture (CORBA) objects, and messages in the simulation objects are transferred at the actual rate in the target setting.

High-performance parallel programs that efficiently utilize heterogeneous CPU+GPU accelerator systems require tuned coordination among multiple program units. However, using current programming frameworks such as CUDA leads to tangled source code that combines code for the core computation with that for device and computational kernel management, data transfers between memory spaces, and various optimizations. In this paper, we propose a programming system based on the principles of Aspect-oriented Programming, to un-clutter the code and to improve programmability of these heterogeneous parallel systems. Specifically, we use standard C++ to describe the core computations and aspects to encapsulate all other support parts. An aspect-weaving compiler is then used to combine these two pieces of code to generate a final program. The system modularizes concerns that are hard to manage using conventional programming frameworks such as CUDA, has a small impact on existing program structure as well as performance, and as a result, simplifies the programming of accelerator-based heterogeneous parallel systems. We also present an options pricing and an n-body simulation example program to demonstrate that programs written using this system can be successfully translated to CUDA programs for NVIDIA GPU hardware and to OpenCL programs for multicore CPUs with comparable performance. For both examples, the performance of the translated code achieved ~80% of the hand-coded CUDA programs.

In developing multi-UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle) system, a simulation environment is essential to verify the functionalities of the whole system with higher productivity and reduced risks of accidents. Simulations of multi-UAV systems are usually accomplished by using distributed systems where multiple standalone simulators are connected via a network. Thus, in order to achieve an improved reality in such distributed simulation environments, the whole multi-UAV simulator should be guaranteed real-time and synchronized behaviors among the connected systems. In this paper, we discuss about the necessity of two important real-time features, i.e., the periodicity of computations and the clock synchronization among standalone simulators. We also propose an architecture based on TMO(Time-triggered and Message-triggered object) model as a multi-UAV simulation platform with our preliminary experimental results showing its potential feasibilities.

This research targets formal modeling of embedded systems capable of self-management. In our approach, we use the ASSL (Autonomic System Specification Language) framework as a development environment, where self-management features of embedded systems are formally specified and an implementation is automatically generated. ASSL exposes a rich set of specification constructs that help developers specify event-driven embedded systems. Hardware is sensed via special metrics intended to drive events and self-management policies that help the system handle critical situations in an autonomous reactive manner. We present this approach along with a simulation case study where ASSL is used to develop control software for the wide-angle camera carried on board NASA's Voyager II spacecraft.

Context-aware computing is one of the key issues in virtual computing environment. This paper aims to compare the ontology-based context modeling and reasoning approach with the traditional non-semantic one. A general scenario of virtual computing is given about the dynamical service aggregation and evolution. And the context of the environment is modeled respectively using an OWL based way and a Markup scheme. Then two sets of experiments are designed to analyze these two approaches from different perspectives like reasoning efficiency, modeling capability and convenience.

The next generation of advanced mechatronic systems is expected to enhance their functionality and improve their performance by context-dependent behavior. Therefore, these systems require to represent information about the complex environment and changing sets of collaboration partners internally. This requirement is in contrast to the usually assumed static structures for embedded systems. In this paper, we present a model-driven approach which overcomes this situation by supporting dynamic data structures while still guaranteeing that valid worst-case execution times can be derived. It supports a flexible resource management which avoids to operate with the prohibitive coarse worst-case boundaries but instead supports to run applications in different profiles which guarantee different resource requirements and put unused resources in a profile at other applications' disposal. By supporting the proper estimation of worst case execution time (WCET) and worst case number of iteration (WCNI) at runtime, we can further support to create new profiles, add or remove them at runtime in order to minimize the over-approximation of the resource consumption resulting from the dynamic data structures required for the outlined class of advanced systems.

Allowing real-time systems to autonomously evolve or self-organize during their life-time poses challenges on guidance of such a process. Hard real-time systems must never break their timing constraints even if undergoing a change in configuration. We propose to enhance future real-time systems with an in-system model-based timing analysis engine capable of deciding whether a configuration is feasible to be executed. This engine is complemented by a formal procedure guiding system evolution. The distributed implementation of a runtime environment (RTE) implementing this procedure imposes two key questions of consistency: How do we ensure model consistency across the distributed system and how do we ensure consistency of the actual system behavior with the model? We present a synchronization protocol solving the model consistency issues and provide a discussion on implications of different mode-change protocols on consistency of the system with its model.

environmental modeling frameworks support scientific model development by providing an Application Programming Interface (API) which model developers use to implement models. This paper presents results of an investigation on the framework invasiveness of environmental modeling frameworks. Invasiveness is defined as the quantity of dependencies between model code and the modeling framework. This research investigates relationships between invasiveness and the quality of modeling code. Additionally, we investigate the relationship between invasiveness and two common framework designs (lightweight vs. heavyweight). Five metrics to measure framework invasiveness were proposed and applied to measure invasiveness between model and framework code of several implementations of Thornthwaite and the Precipitation-Runoff Modeling System (PRMS), two hydrological models. Framework invasiveness measurements were compared with existing software metrics including size (lines of code), cyclomatic complexity, and object-oriented coupling with generally positive correlations being found. We found that models with lower framework invasiveness tended to be smaller, less complex, and have lower coupling. In addition, the lightweight framework implementations of the Thornthwaite and PRMS models were less invasive than the heavyweight framework model implementations. Our initial results suggest that framework invasiveness is undesirable for model code quality and that lightweight frameworks may help reduce invasiveness.

Data stream processing can be applied in scenarios where high throughput and real-time response is required. In distributed environments, preprocessing at sensor nodes is beneficial. Processing logic is deployed at sensor nodes and data is processed while streaming through the nodes. However, updating the logic is difficult in such a continuously running environment. Volatile operator states get lost if nodes are restarted for an update. The challenge is to update the operators during the runtime with the preservation of their states. We developed a data stream processing solution which is capable of adapting the logic on-the-fly. States are copied while migrating from the original to new logic. For implementation, we utilized the dynamic component system OSGi. In this paper we present methods for state selection and transfer from the input buffers of the running operators. The state values to be transferred are limited to a minimum quantity. The state transfer methods allow a faster migration compared to other approaches and a guaranteed output, which makes our system real-time compatible.

The UML Profile for Modeling and Analysis of Real-Time and Embedded systems (MARTE) defines a broadly expressive Time Model to provide a generic timed interpretation for UML models. As a part of MARTE, Clock Constraint Specification Language (CCSL) allows the specification of systems with multiple clock domains as well as nondeterminism. In this paper, we propose to take advantage of Polychrony clock calculus, named hierarchization, to analyze timed systems specified in CCSL, and to generate code for simulation considering determinism. Hierarchization enables to identify the endochrony property in a system that allows code generation ensuring determinism. The presented work is being integrated into the TimeSquare environment dedicated to the simulation of MARTE timed systems.
