In recent times real-time distributed systems have definitively become peer-to-peer organized. The common interactions are those of different real-time components dealing with sensors or actuators, implementing controllers, performing monitoring and surveillance tasks, and interacting between them in a dynamic decentralized way. There is a need for mechanisms that allow the integration of these independent components, saving development time while keeping their real-time capability. Services and events, thanks to their decoupled nature are perfect candidates for supporting these architectures. The data centric approach goes even farther, introducing a global data space that allows a flexible, decoupled and scalable coordination environment over which services and events can be added as specific interactions mechanisms inside this global data space, in order to support all the architectural possibilities. The Data Distribution Service specification provides a totally decentralized data-centric approach with real-time quality of service support. It is a perfect base upon which to develop a framework for the integration of real-time distributed architectures.

Real-time, embedded and safety-critical systems have to meet some quality criteria in order to provide certain reliance on its operation. The quality of a system depends on the complex composition of the quality of its subsystems. Quality composability depends on matchmaking the provided and required quality specifications. To allow for flexibility during the system design, we study composability as a configuration problem. We allow options of quality specifications to represent design choices, deployment choices, operation modes or component adaptability. This kind of assessments of system architectures is very important e.g., for COTS development. The contributions of this paper are: to study the modeling requirements to model composability analysis, to compare two modeling approaches, and to show how a model-driven environment can leverage composability assessments. The two modeling approaches, QoS-FT + OCL and MARTE + VSL, are used to attach quality specifications to system models. However, our ultimate goal is to evaluate these specifications, and we have implemented tool-support to evaluate composability using constraint satisfaction techniques.

Highly desirable types of networked multimedia applications should adapt to changes in the environmental conditions in which they operate, such as communication bandwidth, available memory, and battery lifetime, while providing the best possible quality of service (QoS). In this paper we present a software architecture that facilitates the development of adaptive networked multimedia applications which meet this requirement. The proposed software architecture is based on the Time-triggered Message-triggered object (TMO) programming scheme and it is implemented as a thin layer on top of the TMO Support Middleware (TMOSM). The new layer, called the QoS Adaptation Support Layer (QASL), includes monitoring and runtime reconfiguration facilities that allow us to easily incorporate QoS-adaptation capabilities into TMO-based multimedia applications. In addition, we introduce a novel, practical approach for establishing the QoS configurations that guide the adaptive behavior of a networked multimedia application. A QoS configuration contains a set of parameters that specify the quality-related characteristics of the media streams which a receiver expects from a sender. We also present a strategy used in QASL for selecting, from a given set of QoS configurations, an optimal configuration by reflecting currently observed environmental conditions. Finally, the effectiveness of the QoS-adaptation mechanisms implemented in QASL is evaluated with the use of a heterogeneous network based multi-party videoconference application.

This paper is about the requirements and architectural considerations that provide a SORT system with processes for observing, modeling, simulating, predicting, deciding, and acting in an external environment. For our purposes, "real time'' (RT) means coordinated with an external source of time or with sequences of events over which the system has no direct control. It is this unpredictability in the timing of responses that is the hardest constraint on a real-time system design, especially when it is known a priori that the system cannot keep up with all important events, and that "as fast as possible'' is not appropriate for some external interactions. We will describe a testbed that we are developing as a student team project at California State Polytechnic University, Pomona (Cal Poly Pomona) to experiment with SORT strategies, and a set of games that we will use to benchmark performance. Then we will describe some useful technical background from several areas: reasoning and representation processes, situation theory, levels of meaningfulness in knowledge, and activity loops. Finally, we show how these concepts apply to SORT agent knowledge and coordination. Our contribution here is to outline a set of problems (in the form of cooperative games) that we hope others in the community will adopt as one method for benchmarking models, methods, strategies, and other processes used in SORT systems.

Program analysis supporting software development is often part of edit-compile-cycles, and precise program analysis is time consuming. With the availability of parallel processing power on desktop computers, parallelization is a way to speed up program analysis. This requires a parallel data-flow analysis with sufficient work for each processing unit. The present paper suggests such an approach for object-oriented programs analyzing the target methods of polymorphic calls in parallel. With carefully selected thresholds guaranteeing sufficient work for the parallel threads and only little redundancy between them, this approach achieves a maximum speed-up of 5 (average 1.78) on 8 cores for the benchmark programs.

The increase of computational power in embedded systems has allowed integrating together hard real-time tasks and rich applications. Complex SW infrastructures containing both RTOS and GPOS are required to handle this complexity. To optimally map system functionality to the hard-RT SW domain, to the general purpose SW domain or to HW peripherals, early performance evaluations at the first steps of the design process are required. Approximate timed co-simulation has been proposed as a fast solution for system modeling at early design steps. This co-simulation technique allows simulating systems at speed close to functional execution, while considering timing effects. As a consequence, system performance estimations can be obtained early, allowing efficient design space exploration and system refinement. To achieve fast simulation speed, the SW code is pre-annotated with time information. The annotated code is then natively executed, performing what is called native-based co-simulation. Previous native-based simulation environments are not prepared to model multi-OS systems, so the performance evaluation of the different SW domains is not possible. This paper proposes a new embedded system modeling solution considering dual RTOS/GPOS systems. A real Linux-based infrastructure has been modeled an integrated into a state-of-the-art co-simulation environment. The resulting solution is capable of modeling and evaluating all HW and SW system components providing the designer with valuable information for early system optimization and design space exploration.

We propose a suite of market-oriented task scheduling algorithms to build an AuctionNet for heterogeneous distributed environments. In heterogeneous distributed environments, computing nodes are autonomous and owned by different organizations, for example peer-to-peer systems, desktop grids/clouds. To address such diverse heterogeneity and dynamism in systems, applications, and local policies, efficient and fair task scheduling becomes a challenging issue. To cope with such complexity in a distributed and noncooperative environment, we propose to use market-oriented incentive mechanisms to regulate task scheduling in a distributed manner. Further, to accommodate multiple objectives and criteria, we adopt a combined approach leveraging the advantage of both hypergraph theory and incentive mechanisms. We first formulate a general framework of market-oriented task scheduling in distributed systems. We then present two algorithms for task-bundle scheduling. Preliminary results demonstrate the satisfactory performance of our proposed algorithms. The remaining work to complete the PhD dissertation is then presented. The proposed research carries significant intellectual merits and potential broader impacts in the following aspects. (1) We propose the notion of task-bundle for the first time in the literature. Product-bundle has been a common marketing strategy in our daily life for a long time. In the emerging commercial clouds and desktop clouds, task-bundle could be a useful concept for computing and storage markets. (2) We propose efficient distributed mechanisms that are very suitable for such distributed systems. A novel algorithm combining hypergraph and incentive mechanisms achieves multi-objective optimization. (3) We conduct rigorous analytical study and prove that our algorithms ensure efficiency and fairness and in the meantime maximize social welfare. (4) Overall, this proposal lays a solid foundation and sheds light on future research and realworld applicatio

Storage plays an important role in sufficing the requirements of data intensive applications in a Grid computing environment. Current Scientific applications perform complex computational analysis, and consume/produce hundreds of terabytes of data. The authors in this paper have surveyed available data grid solutions, viz., Storage Resource Broker (SRB), Grid File System (GFS), Storage Resource Manager (SRM), iRODS and WS-DAI and presented their operational experiences in Service oriented Architecture (SOA) based GARUDA grid. SOA introduces more challenges to achieve: availability, security, scalability and performance to the storage system. Based on the survey, the authors proposed GARUDA-Storage Resource Manager (GSRM) that adheres to SRM specifications. GSRM is a disk based SRM implementation based on DPM (Disk Pool manager) architecture. It addresses the various aspects like virtualization, security, latency, performance, and data availability. We discussed how GSRM architecture can leverage CDAC's parallel File System (C-PFS).

Massively Distributed Embedded Systems (MDES) such as Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN) are gaining increasing attention, since they enable a broad range of novel applications starting from monitoring oceans to exploring distant planets. WSNs consist of hundreds of nodes that have typically very limited recourses (computational, memory, energy, etc.) and are deployed in a dynamic environment, where they have to continuously adapt to new conditions. Due to the small-size requirement of the nodes, they are highly resource-constrained. Because of that, the amount of functionality that may be present in each node is limited. Therefore, cooperation between nodes is needed in order to accomplish complex tasks. These facts turn the design of applications for WSNs into a challenge. A promising approach how to deal with it is to use the emergent self-organization metaphor. In this paper a new process algebra (PA) called "Locality-aware extension of π-Calculus" is presented. The algebra is one of several techniques included in a new design methodology for the design of self-organizing behavior in MDES. The method is based on π-Calculus and allows a highlevel description of interactions among processes. As the most important characteristic of self-organization is the restriction of interactions to neighboring elements (localized interactions), we extend the π-Calculus with locality awareness, a necessary abstraction to allow the modeling of self-organization in MDES. To get full locality awareness in π-Calculus, we extended it with concepts for modeling spatiality, probability and time. Moreover, new types of channels are included to cover various types of communication such as distribution, broadcast and aggregation. In order to validate this new PA, we successfully model a self-organizing clustering algorithm for WSNs.

Concurrency Control is one of the core areas of study in P2P object-oriented database system. Although classical optimistic concurrency control has the advantages of non-blocking and deadlock free, it has the problems of late conflict detection and wasted transaction restarts. Peers in an overlay wireless network are faced with low bandwidth connection and frequent disconnection problems, hence, conventional concurrency control cannot be applied correctly to provide concurrency control management for long-duration transactions of a P2P object-oriented database system. Although some new approaches reduce the number of transactions restarts and improve response time by dynamically adjusting the sequential order, they are still some unnecessary transactions restarts and delay in response time which affects correctness of distributed transactions on a P2P protocol. This paper proposes a preliminary approach called One-Stop Multiversion Dynamic Adjustment of Serialization Order (OS-MDASO) which eliminates conflicts between read-only and update transactions to increase degree of concurrency and resolves data conflicts using multiversion dynamic adjustment of serialization order to guarantees database correctness. This approach improves response time by reducing peers involvement in transaction processing and increases tolerance of disconnection by implementing timeout value.
