Reconfigurable computing holds the promise of delivering ASIC-like performance while preserving run-time flexibility of processors. In many application domains, the use of FPGAs is limited by area, power, and timing overheads. Coarse-Grained Reconfigurable Architectures offer higher computation density, but at the price of rather being domain specific. Programmability is also a major issue related to all of the described solutions. This paper describes a heterogeneous multi-core system-on-chip that exploits different flavours of reconfigurable computing, merged together in a high parallel on-chip and off-chip interconnect utilized for both data and configuration. The aim of this work is to deliver a single monolithic engine that capitalizes on the strong points of different reconfigurable fabrics, while providing a friendly programming interface. The user is ultimately able to manage a broad spectrum of different applications, exploiting the most efficient means of computation through utilization of each kernel, while retaining a software-oriented development environment as much as possible.

Multicore systems have become standard for desktop computers today. Current operating systems and software development tools provide straightforward means to use the additional computing power. However, a more fundamental change in the design and development of software is required to fully exploit the power of multicore systems. Furthermore, the fast growing market of embedded systems is currently largely unaffected by the introduction of multicore systems. This will change quickly in the future, which will mean that there will be a demand on efficient development of reliable embedded software that can give real-time guarantees and exploit the available power on multicore *** JEOPARD project addresses this demand by developing Java software tools to exploit multicore power while ensuring correctness and predictable timing. This paper gives an overview of the JEOPARD project and focuses on key technical issues such as real-time scheduling and real-time garbage collection on multi-core systems.

Network enabled capability (NEC) is the U.K. Ministry of Defencepsilas response to the quickly changing conflict environment in which its forces must operate. In NEC, systems need to be integrated in context, to assist in human activity and provide dependable inter-operation. In order to provide reliable and sustainable military capability, fast paced changes must be conducted without halting the operation of a capability. In this paper we present the concept of evolutionary service-oriented architecture for delivering sustainable capability. The reliability of the architecture is evaluated by simulations using a computer-based model. The simulation results indicate that the evolutionary service-oriented architecture can provide higher reliability and sustainability in the provision of capability in a dynamic environment.

Multiprocessor embedded software presents major challenges including the increased complexity and stringent performance requirements raised by parallel processing capability. Although component-based approaches can greatly alleviate the complexity problem, traditional approaches do not provide adequate support for performance requirements on multiprocessors. In this paper, we extend component-based approaches for performance-aware design and analysis of multiprocessor embedded software. The proposed approach begins with a component model that is able to capture concurrent and performance-critical behavior based on UML activity diagrams. It then identifies and exploits potential sources of concurrency within components to produce a multithreaded software design targeted at multiprocessors. We also provide a schedulability analysis that can be used for validating multithreaded software design from a temporal perspective.

There is increasing convergence between the fields of parallel and embedded computing. The demand for more functionality in embedded devices means that complex multicore architectures will be used. In order to promote scalability and obtain predictability, on-chip processor-local private memory subsystems will be used. Whilst at the hardware level this is technical feasible, the more pressing problem is how such memory is presented to the programmer and how its local access is *** this paper we illustrate how Java augmented by the Real-time Specification for Java can be used to present the abstraction of a thread-local scoped memory area. We show how to enforce access to the memory area to a single real-time thread. We implement the model on the JOP multiprocessor system and report on our experiences.

It is difficult to build the simulate environment for researching on mobile computer environment, especially for MRTT simulate in mobile distributed environment., Usually object oriented Programming (OOP) or Multi-Thread technology maybe the first choice, but this paper will introduce a simulate method based on structured programming with VC6.0 which is turn out more efficiency. In this paper we introduce the base structure of the system, and compare three commit protocols and three migration strategy.

Remote sensing image presented as one of the most effective methods to acquire the disaster information in the Wenchuan earthquake. For its technical advantages such as rapid and flexible takeoff, the Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV) played an important role in the "5.12" Wenchuan earthquake emergency relief. The UAV remote sensing image has some special characteristics contrasting with other RS image, so how to process quickly the images is the key issue. In this paper, a fast method is presented for moisacing the remote sensing images from the UAV without ground control points. The method grounds on two principles, parallel computing and digital photogrammetry. The experimental results justify the needs of uncontrolled mosaic images production for the requirements of post-disaster emergency. The mosaic images without correction by ground control points provide no geographic information, but they can provide panoramic and macro-information of earthquake-stricken areas. Then the geometric correction technique was employed to correct the panoramic mosaic images to obtain the high-precise digital orthophoto based on the pre-disaster information such as topographic maps. By using the object-oriented method for the information extraction and rapid automatic classification of the UVA remote sensing image can achieve the anticipative goals. © 2009 Copyright SPIE - The international Society for Optical Engineering.

Many emerging embedded systems consist of multiple embedded nodes, which are connected through an internal small area network. In such systems, the synchronization between the embedded nodes is essential to provide real-time cooperation environment. On small area networks, the severe obstacle for achieving real-time synchronization is the unpredictable overhead of the system software running on the embedded nodes. This is true especially if a traditional operating system has been installed. Despite of these drawbacks, it is quite common to run traditional operating systems on some of the embedded nodes to utilize various existing applications. In this paper, we propose a novel design of communication primitives called RTDiP-Sync for real-time distributed synchronization over small area networks. Experiment results show that the suggested design can minimize the communication overhead and provide better overhead prediction.

Model Driven Design (MDD) and Organic computing (OC) present two different approaches to control the continually increasing complexity of technical systems which is a consequence of Moore's law. This statement holds in particular for the design of hardware and software for embedded systems. MDD is the effort to solve this challenge by a widely hierachical and modular organized design process in which the actual design is seperated from architecture. Whereas the design addresses the functional requirements, i.e. expressing the functional behaviour of the designed system in a platform-independent way, the architecture handles questions concerning infrastructure in particular, e.g. how non-functional requirements like scalability, reliability and performance are realized. In this context, architecture does not refer to a concrete hardware system, but rather to a kind of template suite or programming environment which can run on different real computer architectures. The goal of MDD is to map the platform- independent description to the architecture automatically.

The paper describe a detailed study into the object-oriented design and implementation of distributed and parallel computing environment for the forward kinematics analysis of parallel manipulator on desktop computers cluster using message passing while communication are needed among related computing nodes. The solution routines were blind to whether the objects were local or remote. Numerical tests were carried out and reasonable speed-up was achieved, particularly for direction solution methods. It is concluded that message passing provides a viable mechanism for computing nodes coordination while implementing distributed parallel computing environment based on personal computer(PC) cluster.
