Federated computing environments offer requestors the ability to dynamically invoke services offered by collaborating providers in the virtual service network. Without an efficient resource management, however, the assignment of providers to customer's requests cannot be optimized and cannot offer high reliability without relevant SLA guarantees. We propose a new SLA-based serviceable metacomputing environment (SERVME) capable of matching providers based on QoS requirements and performing autonomic provisioning and deprovisioning of services according to dynamic requestor needs. This paper presents the new autonomic SLA management and the object-oriented SLA model for large-scale service-oriented systems. An initial reference implementation in the SORCER environment is also described.

The paper describe a detailed study into the object-oriented design and implementation of distributed and parallel computing environment for Finite element analysis of parallel manipulator on desktop computers cluster using message passing while communication are needed among related computing nodes. The solution routines were blind to whether the objects were local or remote. Numerical tests were carried out and reasonable speed-up was achieved, particularly for direction solution methods. It is concluded that message passing provides a viable mechanism for computing nodes coordination while implementing distributed parallel computing environment based on personal computer (PC) cluster.

This contribution details the application of a developed interactive visual environment for power system analysis. In principle, it is based on a methodology to obtain the numerical solution of the Ordinary Differential Equations (ODEs) that represent the dynamic behavior of power systems. The methodology relies on the application of object oriented Programming (OOP) techniques, so that power system components can be represented as objects, which are later used as functional blocks, facilitating the representation of a system of any type of complexity. parallel Programming (PP) techniques are also applied in order to fully exploit the capabilities of new micro-processors of executing more than one process simultaneously, with the aim of reducing the simulation time. Besides, the parallel evaluation scheme presented in this paper has shown to be effective and can be easily adapted to any other numerical integration method without the need to modify the numerical algorithm. Case studies are presented which demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed interactive digital tool and the methodology for power system analysis.

Modular component-based robot systems require not only an infrastructure for component management, but also scalability as well as real-time properties. Robot technology (RT)-middleware is a software platform for such component-based robot systems. Each component in the RT-Middleware, so-called "RT-component'' supporting particular robot functions, is based on common object request broker architecture (CORBA). Unfortunately, the RT-Middleware lacks the mechanism for real-time control. In this paper, we extend the framework of the RT-Components to take care of timing constraints. We first enable tasks to have different periods within each RT-Component. We then modify the packet format of the General Inter-ORB Protocol (GIOP) to transfer the information of timing constraints over RT-Components. The performance evaluation on ART-Linux shows that the extended RT-Component framework improves the schedulability of distributed real-time tasks, without causing critical overheads in unmarshaling the modified GIOP packets.

Our society depend on embedded and ubiquitous computing and the reliability of embedded software becomes more and more important. We have conducted a five years project with industries to develop software for realizing highly reliable embedded systems. We have tackled reliability issues from the following aspects. (1)Design environment: we have developed a UML design verification tool that apply model checking techniques to improve the design quality of application software. (2)Operating environment: we have developed operating system supports that realize multiple execution of real-time operating systems and also developed operating systems with enhanced resource management. Both technologies contribute the realization of robust run-time environment. (3) Real-time environment: we have developed real-time garbage collection techniques for Jave. They prevent the suspension of applications that violates the correct behavior of real-time applications. Also, they reduce the effort of application programmers to avoid garbage-collection during important execution timing. We have obtained fruitful results from these three research themes, and some of them are actually used in industries. Furthermore, we have integrated the results to make synergetic effect of them. In order to demonstrate the effectiveness, we have conduct an experiment. In this paper, we introduce the project and its results.

The use of parallel technologies to solve complex scientific problems has gained increased popularity. The ray optical methods are deterministic propagation approaches that are based on geometrically searching paths between emitter and receivers. They offer higher accuracy than empirical models, but suffer from slow calculations on exhausted rays that have to be searched. In this paper, an object-oriented scheme based on POP-C++ for parallel objects to accelerate outdoor ray launching is described. Performance evaluation is presented to show that this parallel scheme is promising in outdoor wireless propagation modeling. The possibility of running this model in the distributed grid environment is also discussed. Results have shown the great potential of using such a parallel model to predict accurate outdoor wireless propagation scenarios within a short time.

Up to now, it still remains a big challenge for us to build a high performance geo-computing system with high processing speed and also be easy of use by domain researchers. The unprecedented scale data and various complex algorithms pose many computational and management challenges. To properly settle these main issues above, a new system framework for high performance geo-computing is presented in this paper. A High Performance Geo-data object Storage System (HPGOSS) base on parallel file System is used for eliminating I/O performance bottleneck and deal with the data managing problem result from the close relevancy between geo-information and remote sensing image data. parallel programming models for fast parallelization of geo-computing algorithms are proposed. In addition, the job scheduling strategy and workflow engine are also discussed. Finally, such system could provide a parallel geo-computing environment with high performance, easy to use, optimal resource utilization, and high scalability.

The pipeline structure is intuitive design pattern for parallel and distributed programming. However, it has some limitations so that it can not be applied effectively, especially in the distributed environment. This paper describes a distributed pipeline programming framework (DPPF) for state-based pattern. DPPF makes use of the state-based pipeline design pattern and object-oriented technology to design pipeline. In DPPF, the pipeline stage is regard as an object that be passed between two compute nodes with its state. Message-passing method is replaced object-passing method through Java socket for information transmission. For the state pattern, all compute nodes are separated from the pipeline control flow. Information transmission that runs in the background is transparent for the programmer. So programmers are more easily to design pipeline structure for distributed programming. In addition, it is effective to improve the performance and dynamic load balance for some coarse-grained applications.

Querying non-conventional data sources is recognized as a major issue in new environments and applications such as those occurring in pervasive computing. A key issue is the ability to query data, streams and services in a declarative way. In this paper, we propose a framework that defines a data-centric view of pervasive environments: the classical notion of database is extended to come up with a broader notion, defined as relational pervasive environment, homogeneously integrating data, streams and active/passive services. It allows declarative definitions of service-oriented continuous queries using a SQL-like language, based on the so-called Serena algebra. We also tackle the design of a pervasive environment management system that handles non-conventional data sources and service-oriented continuous queries.
