Multithreaded object-oriented Programming in concurrency environment using object-oriented technology is a complex activity. Programmers need to be aware of issues unrelated to their domain of problem, and are often unprepared for the challenges of the concurrent object-oriented programming brings. The interaction of their components becomes more complex, and makes it difficult to validate the design and correctness of the implemented program. Supporting separation of concerns in the design and implementation of the multithreaded object-oriented programming can provide a number of benefits such as comprehension, reusability, extensibility and adaptability in both design and implementation. We have tackled this problem by adopting the technique of separation of concerns in multithreaded object-oriented programming. In this paper we demonstrate an aspect-oriented approach that can be used for multithreaded object-oriented programming. We also show how better the separation of concerns in components. Readers/Writers problem is demonstrated using an aspect-oriented approach. Our methodology, which is based on aspect-oriented techniques as well as language and architecture independence, is an aspect-oriented framework.

With the emergence of multicore processors, parallel software is beginning to be used in the domain of application development in addition to high performance computing. In this work three software design patterns are chosen from each pattern category as subjects, representing reusable elements of object oriented software design. Behavior of these patterns in a shared memory parallel environment is investigated regarding different aspects of parallelization including parallelizability, scalability and workload distribution.

A key aspect of ubiquitous computing is using sensor networks to effectively and unobtrusively infer human activities in their environment. A typical top-down method is to first label and decompose activities as sequences of actions with certain probabilities, and then use these predefined activity models for recognition and prediction. This method, however, does not capture the internal goals of different actions, and it only deals with those explicitly defined activity models. In this article, inspired by traditional activity theory and qualitative process theory, we present a goal directed human activity computing model. A formal activity ontology is proposed so as to capture the internal semantic relations between different atomic activities such as actions and processes. Several representative inference rules are introduced to predict the future activities in terms of the proposed activity ontology and the history of actions.

This paper introduces an extensible distributed file system framework, YaFS, using heterogeneous online storage services as its back-ends. It provides a configurable solution for simplifying the usage of multiple storage resources and accessing data ubiquitously and safely. YaFS is POSIX compliant, so that it could support most of the existing applications seamlessly. An offline mode is used to cope with the challenged unreliable network environment. We implement a storage abstraction layer and a plug-in mechanism for uniformly accessing different storage services transparently, and it makes the system expanded easily. YaFS could effectively support for storing large object to size limited services and achieving high aggregate bandwidth by striping data on multiple servers with bandwidth-saving method. The evaluation on a prototype implementation with email services as its storage back-end shows that the performance and usability of the framework is viable.

In the context of the EU funded R&D project ATRACO we are developing a conceptual framework and a system architecture that will support the realization of adaptive and trusted ambient intelligent systems. Our approach is based on a number of well established engineering principles, such as the distribution of control and the separation of service interfaces from the service implementation, adopting a SOA model combined with intelligent agents and ontologies. Agents support adaptive task realization and enhanced human-machine interaction while ontologies provide knowledge representation, management of heterogeneity, semantically rich resource discovery and adaptation. ATRACO systems are dynamic compositions of distributed, loosely-coupled and highly cohesive components that operate in dynamic environments.

Reconfigurable computing holds the promise of delivering ASIC-like performance while preserving run-time flexibility of processors. In many application domains, the use of FPGAs is limited by area, power, and timing overheads. Coarse-grained reconfigurable architectures offer higher computation density, but at the price of rather being domain specific. Programmability is also a major issue related to all of the described solutions. This paper describes a heterogeneous multi-core system-on-chip that exploits different flavours of reconfigurable computing, merged together in a high parallel on-chip and off-chip interconnect utilized for both data and configuration. The aim of this work is to deliver a single monolithic engine that capitalizes on the strong points of different reconfigurable fabrics, while providing a friendly programming interface. The user is ultimately able to manage a broad spectrum of different applications, exploiting the most efficient means of computation through utilization of each kernel, while retaining a software-oriented development environment as much as possible.

Modeling communications in wireless networks is a challenging task, since it requires a simple mathematical object on which efficient algorithms can be designed but which must also reflect the complex physical constraints inherent in wireless networks, such as interferences, the lack of global knowledge, and purely local computations. As a tractable mathematical object, the unit disk graph (UDG) is a popular model that has enabled the development of efficient algorithms for crucial networking problems. In a rho-UDG, two nodes are connected if and only if their distance is at most rho, for some rho > 0. However, such a connectivity requirement is basically not compatible with the reality of wireless networks due to the environment of the nodes as well as the constraints of radio transmission. For this purpose, the signal interference plus noise ratio model (SINR) is the more commonly used model. The SINR model focuses on radio interferences created over the network depending on the distance to transmitters. Nevertheless, due to its complexity, this latter model has been the subject of very few theoretical investigations and lacks of good algorithmic features. In this paper, we demonstrate how careful scheduling of the nodes enables the two models to be combined to give the benefits of both the algorithmic features of the UDG and the physical validity of the SINR. Precisely, we show that it is possible to emulate a 1/radic(n ln n)-UDG that satisfies the constraints of the SINR over any set of n wireless nodes distributed uniformly in a unit square, with only a O(ln 3 n) time and power stretch factor. The main strength of our contribution lies in the fact that the scheduling is set in a fully distributed way and considers non-uniform power ranges, and it can therefore fit the sensor network setting. Moreover, our scheduling is optimal up to a polylogarithmic factor in terms of throughput capacity according to the lower bound of Gupta and Kumar.

With the emergence of multicore processors, parallel software is beginning to be used in the domain of application software in addition to high performance computing software. The use of parallel processing hardware with current software engineering techniques and principles, like object oriented programming, will surely produce new challenges in area and change the way we look at quality criterions. In this work, experiments on bringing a software design pattern to a parallel environment are explained regarding different aspects of parallelization like data consistency, scalability and workload distribution. All the experiments are performed by keeping the parallelization at object level in order to reason about discussions that can be made on object oriented software design for multicore systems. Discussions include adaptation of current software to multicore platforms, important points when designing software for multicore systems and possible research on quality criterions of parallel software. As a result of our initial studies we have seen that it is promising to conduct research on object-level parallelism in multicore systems.

parallel computing is notoriously challenging due to the difficulty in developing correct and efficient programs. With the arrival of multi-core processors for desktop systems, desktop applications must now be parallelised. However achieving task parallelism for such object-oriented programs has traditionally been, and still remains, difficult. This paper presents a powerful task concept for parallel object-oriented programming and presents the results from a source-to-source compiler and runtime system. With the addition of a single keyword, the sequential code does not require restructuring and asynchronous task management is performed on behalf of the programmer;the parallel code required to realise task parallelism looks very much like the sequential counterpart. An intuitive solution is provided to handle task dependencies as well as integrating different task concepts into one model. © 2008 Crown Copyright.

Although a growing number of devices have the support for parallel processing, parallelism is not widely exploited, as it should be. This can be illustrated by the fact that all Apple desktops and laptops are currently supplied with one or more dualcore processors. Despite this, parallel programming in popular languages such as Java is not widely encouraged and often only recommended as a last resort. In addition, it is likely that the next generation parallel applications will have to operate within a diverse range of heterogeneous devices ranging from supercomputers to sensors. This paper proposes a flexible component-based middleware that aims at facilitating the construction of deadlock free parallel and concurrent applications for heterogeneous environments. The middleware is particularly targeted to tailor applications to the target need and environment. For our prototyping, we implemented plugins that are capable of deploying JCSP (CSP library for Java programmers) and occam-pi processes. Both JCSP and occam-pi make use of the CSP disciplines. The CSP (Communicating Sequential Processes) paradigm helps us to avoid concurrency problems such as deadlocks. It should be stressed that there is no bias towards these languages as the proposed middleware is highly extensible.
