Although a growing number of devices have the support for parallel processing, parallelism is not widely exploited, as it should be. This can be illustrated by the fact that all Apple desktops and laptops are currently supplied with one or more dual- core processors. Despite this, parallel programming in popular languages such as Java is not widely encouraged and often only recommended as a last resort. In addition, it is likely that the next generation parallel applications will have to operate within a diverse range of heterogeneous devices ranging from supercomputers to sensors. This paper proposes a flexible component-based middleware that aims at facilitating the construction of deadlock-free parallel and concurrent applications for heterogeneous environments. The middleware is particularly targeted to tailor applications to the target need and environment. For our prototyping, we implemented plu- gins that are capable of deploying JCSP (CSP library for Java programmers) and OCCam-pi processes. Both JCSP and OCCam-pi make use of the CSP disciplines. The CSP (Communicating Sequential Processes) paradigm helps us to avoid concurrency problems such as deadlocks. It should be stressed that there is no bias towards these languages as the proposed middleware is highly extensible.

With the emergence of multicore processors, parallel software is beginning to be used in the domain of application software in addition to high performance computing software. The use of parallel processing hardware with current software engineering techniques and principles, like object oriented programming, will surely produce new challenges in area and change the way we look at quality criterions. In this work, experiments on bringing a software design pattern to a parallel environment are explained regarding different aspects of parallelization like data consistency, scalability and workload distribution. All the experiments are performed by keeping the parallelization at object level in order to reason about discussions that can be made on object oriented software design for multicore systems. Discussions include adaptation of current software to multicore platforms, important points when designing software for multicore systems and possible research on quality criterions of parallel software. As a result of our initial studies we have seen that it is promising to conduct research on object-level parallelism in multicore systems.

parallel computing is notoriously challenging due to the difficulty in developing correct and efficient programs. With the arrival of multi-core processors for desktop systems, desktop applications must now be parallelised. However achieving task parallelism for such object-oriented programs has traditionally been, and still remains, difficult. This paper presents a powerful task concept for parallel object-oriented programming and presents the results from a source-to-source compiler and runtime system. With the addition of a single keyword, the sequential code does not require restructuring and asynchronous task management is performed on behalf of the programmer; the parallel code required to realise task parallelism looks very much like the sequential counterpart. An intuitive solution is provided to handle task dependencies as well as integrating different task concepts into one model.

Developing a distributed application for mobile resource constrained devices is a difficult and error-prone task that requires awareness of several system-level details (e.g., fault-tolerance, ...). Several mobile middleware solutions addressing these issues have, been proposed. However, they rely on either significant. changes in application structure, extensions to the programming language syntax and semantics, domain specific languages, cumbersome development tools, or a combination of the above. The main disadvantages of these approaches are lack of transparency and reduced portability. In this paper we describe our work on enabling transparent integration between applications and middleware Without changing application structure, extending the programming language or otherwise reducing portability. We used the OBIVAN middleware but our solutions are general. To achieve this goal we employ program analysis and transformation techniques for extending application code with hooks for calling middleware services. Application code extension is performed automatically at compile-time by a code extension tool integrated with the development environment tool set. We describe the implementation of our NET and Java prototypes and discuss evaluation results.

Several approaches for scalable interest management (IM) within real-time distributed virtual environments (DVEs) have been proposed based upon some division of the data-space in to disjoint volumes or cells. Any such approach, however, must implement some mechanism for propagating the query and update messages around the distributed system. The efficiency of this process can greatly effect the scalability of such systems. In this paper we evaluate an adaptive approach to this problem.

Component-based software technologies have emerged as a modern approach to software development for distributed and grid applications. However, the lack of longer-term experience and the complexity of the target systems demand more research results in the field. This paper provides an overview of three different approaches to developing component- based grid applications. In order to re-use legacy codes, the wrapper software approach can be adopted in its two flavours - hand-written or automatically generated wrapper code. Another approach applicable to existing object-oriented software is to componentise the code by introducing appropriate modifications. The third approach is component-oriented development from scratch. We compare and contrast the three approaches and highlight their advantages and weaknesses.

We give an introduction and survey of a formal modeling and verification approach that has been successfully applied to time-triggered protocols. This method allows us to capture and reason about real-time properties of distributed systems. It relies on the modeling concept of calendar similar to what has been used for a long time in discrete event simulation. It is also supported by efficient symbolic verification tools provided by the SAL environment. We present the basis of the modeling method and discuss two related verification approaches for analyzing complex, real-time distributed systems.

In this paper we describe our approach for developing a QoS-aware, dependable execution environment for large-scale distributed stream processing applications. Distributed stream processing applications have strong timeliness and security demands. In particular, we address the following challenges: (1) propose a real-time dependable execution model by extending the component-based execution model with real-time and dependability properties, and (2) develop QoS-aware application composition and adaptation techniques that employ resource management strategies and security policies when discovering and selecting application components. Our approach enables us to develop a distributed stream processing environment that is predictable, secure, flexible and adaptable.

In an integration system of RFID and wireless sensor network (WSN), RFID is used to identify objects while WSN can provide context environment information of these objects. Thus, it increases system intelligent in pervasive computing. We propose the EPC sensor network (ESN) architecture as an integration system of RFID and WSN. This ESN architecture is based on EPCglobal architecture, the de facto international standard for RFID. The core of ESN is the middleware part which is also implemented in our work. In this paper, complex event processing (CEP) technology is used in our ESN middleware which can handle large volume of events from distributed RFID and sensor readers in real time. Through filtering, grouping, aggregating and constructing complex event, ESN middleware provides a more meaningful report for the clients and increases system automation.
