The avionics industry is converging toward the next generation of software standards produced by The Open Group via the Future Airborne Capability environment (FACE) consortium and related FACE Technical Standard. The standard combines ARINC 653, a previous avionics standard, with subsets of POSIX 1003.1 that are closely aligned with the POSIX real-time profiles PSE52, PSE53, and PSE54. In this paper, we describe our approach to design, implement, and certify a system with FACE Conformance to the FACE Operating System Segment Safety Base profile. Our approach integrates the ARINC 653-compliant Deos with RTEMS, an open-source real-time operating system (RTOS). Our goal in combining Deos/RTEMS was to achieve certification of FACE Conformance in a low-cost manner by relying on existing, mature software that already provides the majority of the functionality required by the FACE Technical Standard. We reached our goal with under 10,000 source lines of code (SLOC) written to integrate RTEMS into Deos and implement any additional POSIX application programming interfaces (APIs) and tests needed for certification.

The microservice architecture has recently become a driving trend in the cloud by disaggregating a monolithic application into many scenario-oriented service blocks (microservices). The decomposition process results in a highly dynamic execution scenario, in which various chained microservices contend for computing resources in different ways. While parallelism has been exploited at both the instruction/thread level and the task/request level, very limited work has been done with the grain-size of a microservice. Current parallel processing solutions are sub-optimal as they neither capture the unique characteristics of microservices nor consider the uncertainty arises in the microservice environment. In this work we introduce microservice level parallelism (MLP), a technique that aims to precisely coalesce and align parallel microservice chains for better system performance and resource utilization. We identify major issues that prevent servers from effectively exploiting MLP and we define metrics that can guide MLP optimization. We propose v-MLP, a volatility-aware MLP that is able to adapt to a highly heterogeneous and dynamic microservice environment. We show that v-MLP can reduce tail latency by up to 50% and improve resource utilization by up to 15 % under various scenarios.

A co-simulation may comprise several heterogeneous federates with diverse spatial and temporal execution characteristics. In an iterative time-stepped simulation, a federation exhibits the Bulk Synchronous parallel (BSP) computation paradigm in which all federates perform local operations and synchronize with their peers before proceeding to the next round of computation. In this context, the lowest performing (i.e., slowest) federate dictates the progression of the federation logical time. One challenge in co-simulation is performance profiling for individual federates and entire federations. The computational resource assignment to the federates can have a large impact on federation performance. Furthermore, a federation may comprise federates located on different physical machines as is the case for cloud and edge computing environments. As such, distributed profiling and resource assignment to the federation is a major challenge for operationalizing the co-simulation execution at scale. This paper presents the Execution Performance Profiling and Optimization (EXPPO) methodology, which addresses these challenges by using execution performance profiling at each simulation execution step and for every federate in a federation. EXPPO uses profiling to learn performance models for each federate, and uses these models in its federation resource recommendation tool to solve an optimization problem that improves the execution performance of the co-simulation. Using an experimental testbed, the efficacy of EXPPO is validated to show the benefits of performance profiling and resource assignment in improving the execution runtimes of co-simulations while also minimizing the execution cost.

Debugging is one of the most difficult tasks during the development of cloud-native applications for the microservices architecture. This paper proposes a continuous debugging facility to support the DevOps continuous development methodology. It has been implemented and integrated into the Integrated DevOps environment CIDE for microservices written in the agent-oriented programming language CAOPLE. The paper also reports controlled experiments with the debug facility. Experiment data show that the overhead is less than 3% of the execution time on average.

Reinforcement learning is used in many applications in artificial intelligence fields such as computer vision and environmental contextualized decision-making scenarios; virtual human swarms provide research directions for multi-intelligent body collaboration and environmental field detection in multi-intelligent body swarms. Football is a group sport, which is characterized by its holistic nature, confrontation, versatility, and ease of implementation, as well as the characteristics of both individual intelligence and group intelligence, and is a typical application scenario for multi-intelligence collaboration. This paper takes football as the research object to study the team collaboration problem and team gaming problem of the virtual human swarm in a specific environment and solves the cooperation and competition relationship between intelligence with reinforcement learning of multi-intelligence training.

With the emergence of CaaS, a cloud service model that can quickly build a production environment, this model has been widely used in the industry. However, the degree of loose coupling of various containers in the cluster and the fine-grained level of function division are often difficult to achieve people’s expectations. In addition, it is difficult to achieve the desired effect in terms of cloud cluster security. Therefore, this paper takes container-based cloud computing clusters as the main research object, and proposes a fine-grained, loosely coupled cloud cluster model based on containers, is called Pervasive-container computing. The experimental results show that Pervasive-container computing not only meets the fine-grained loose coupling characteristics required by microservices, but also adopts the strategy of “created with time” and “destroy after use”, which provides guarantees in terms of endogenous security. In addition, the proposed scheduling algorithm based on Pervasive-container calculation reduces the time consumption of file transfer by 20% compared to the time consumption without the algorithm.

Pangeo is a community of scientists and software developers collaborating to enable Big Data Geoscience analysis interactively in the public cloud and on high-performance computing (HPC) systems. At the core of the Pangeo software stack is (1) Xarray, which adds labels to metadata such as dimensions, coordinates and attributes for raw array-oriented data, (2) Dask, which provides parallel computation and out-of-core memory capabilities, and (3) Jupyter Lab which offers the web-based interactive environment to the Pangeo platform. Geoscientists now have a strong candidate software stack to analyze large datasets, and they are very curious about performance differences between the Zarr and NetCDF4 data formats on both traditional file storage systems and object storage. We have written a benchmarking suite for the Pangeo stack that can measure scalability and performance information of both input/output (I/O) throughput and computation. We will describe how we performed these benchmarks, analyzed our results, and we will discuss the pros and cons of the Pangeo software stack in terms of I/O scalability on both cloud and HPC storage systems.

Data infrastructures manage the life cycle of digital assets and allow users to efficiently discover them. To improve the Findability, Accessibility, Interoperability and Re-usability (FAIRness) of digital assets, a data infrastructure needs to provide digital assets with not only rich meta information and semantics contexts information but also globally resolvable identifiers. The Persistent Identifiers (PIDs), like Digital object Identifier (DOI) are often used by data publishers and infrastructures. The traditional IP network and client-server model can potentially cause congestion and delays when many consumers simultaneously access data. In contrast, Information Centric Networking (ICN) technologies such as Named Data Networking (NDN) adopt a data centric approach where digital data objects, once requested, may be stored on intermediate hops in the network. Consecutive requests for that unique digital object are then made available by these intermediate hops (caching). This approach distributes traffic load more efficient and reliable compared to host-to-host connection oriented techniques, and demonstrates attractive opportunities for sharing digital objects across distributed networks. However, such an approach also faces several challenges. It requires not only an effective translation between the different naming schemas among PIDs and NDN, in particular for supporting PIDs from different publishers or repositories. Moreover, the planning and configuration of an ICN environment for distributed infrastructures are lacking an automated solution. To bridge the gap, we propose an ICN planning service with specific consideration of interoperability across PID schemas in the Cloud environment.

The rapid development of distributed storage technology has attracted growing attention from both industry and academia. Although distributed system has been studied for many years, however, it is widely applied to engineering practice since the rise of cloud computing recently. Cloud storage constructs a storage resource pool with massive common storage devices through networks, which could be allocated to authorized users on demand. In this paper, we present a distributed business-aware storage execution environment towards large-scale applications. Initially, we present the overall of our proposed storage execution environment and different data delivery models according to corresponding business needs. Furthermore, we design a globally shared and cross-regional deployed metadata service to minimize the access delay of metadata. Finally, the approach presented in this paper has been validated to be effective through a series of evaluation experiments and actual use cases.

Autonomous driving has gained popularity due to its high reliability compared to human drivers. Autonomous vehicles combine variety of sensors to perceive their surroundings, and use deep learning (DL) to extract complicated information from the sensing data. However, there are several challenges: Many DL models have explosive model sizes, and therefore not only time consuming but also power consuming when implementing on embedded systems on vehicles, further degrading the battery life-cycle. The current on-board AI treats lane detection and car location separately. In this paper, we propose an end-to-end multi-task environment detection framework. We fuse the 3D point cloud object detection model and lane detection model, with model compression technique applied. As on-board sensors forward information to the multi-task network, it not only parallel two detection tasks to extract combination information, but also reduces entire running time of the DL model. Experiments show by adding the model compression technique, the running speed of multi-task model improves more than 2×. Also, running time of lane detection model on Nvidia Jetson TX2 is almost 6× less comparing with running on CPU, which shows reasonableness of using embedded AI computing device on autonomous vehicle.
