Pangeo is a community of scientists and software developers collaborating to enable Big Data Geoscience analysis interactively in the public cloud and on high-performance computing (HPC) systems. At the core of the Pangeo software stack is (1) Xarray, which adds labels to metadata such as dimensions, coordinates and attributes for raw array-oriented data, (2) Dask, which provides parallel computation and out-of-core memory capabilities, and (3) Jupyter Lab which offers the web-based interactive environment to the Pangeo platform. Geoscientists now have a strong candidate software stack to analyze large datasets, and they are very curious about performance differences between the Zarr and NetCDF4 data formats on both traditional file storage systems and object storage. We have written a benchmarking suite for the Pangeo stack that can measure scalability and performance information of both input/output (I/O) throughput and computation. We will describe how we performed these benchmarks, analyzed our results, and we will discuss the pros and cons of the Pangeo software stack in terms of I/O scalability on both cloud and HPC storage systems.

Data infrastructures manage the life cycle of digital assets and allow users to efficiently discover them. To improve the Findability, Accessibility, Interoperability and Re-usability (FAIRness) of digital assets, a data infrastructure needs to provide digital assets with not only rich meta information and semantics contexts information but also globally resolvable identifiers. The Persistent Identifiers (PIDs), like Digital object Identifier (DOI) are often used by data publishers and infrastructures. The traditional IP network and client-server model can potentially cause congestion and delays when many consumers simultaneously access data. In contrast, Information Centric Networking (ICN) technologies such as Named Data Networking (NDN) adopt a data centric approach where digital data objects, once requested, may be stored on intermediate hops in the network. Consecutive requests for that unique digital object are then made available by these intermediate hops (caching). This approach distributes traffic load more efficient and reliable compared to host-to-host connection oriented techniques, and demonstrates attractive opportunities for sharing digital objects across distributed networks. However, such an approach also faces several challenges. It requires not only an effective translation between the different naming schemas among PIDs and NDN, in particular for supporting PIDs from different publishers or repositories. Moreover, the planning and configuration of an ICN environment for distributed infrastructures are lacking an automated solution. To bridge the gap, we propose an ICN planning service with specific consideration of interoperability across PID schemas in the Cloud environment.

In this presentation, we report the results of applying a binarized Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) and a Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) for image-based object recognition. While the demand rises for robots with robust object recognition implemented with Neural Networks, a trade-off between data processing rate and power consumption persists. Some applications utilise Graphics Processing Units (GPU), which results in high power consumption, thus undesirable for embedded systems, while the others communicate with cloud computers to minimise computational resources at the clients' side, i.e. robots, raising another concern that the robots are unable to perform object recognition without the servers and network connections. To overcome these difficulties, we propose an embedded object recognition system implemented with a binarized CNN and an FPGA. FPGAs consist of a matrix of reconfigurable logic gates allowing parallel computing which befit most image processing algorithms such as the CNN. We train the binarized CNN on one of our datasets that contain images of several kinds of food and beverages. The results of the experiments show that the binarized CNN with an FPGA maintains high accuracy as well as real-time computation, suggesting that the proposed system is suitable for robots to perform their tasks in a real-world environment without needing to communicate with a server.

The high-performance requirements needed to implement the most advanced functionalities of current and future Cyber-Physical Systems (CPSs) are challenging the development processes of CPSs. On one side, CPSs rely on model-driven engineering (MDE) to satisfy the non-functional constraints and to ensure a smooth and safe integration of new features. On the other side, the use of complex parallel and heterogeneous embedded processor architectures becomes mandatory to cope with the performance requirements. In this regard, parallel programming models, such as OpenMP or CUDA, are a fundamental brick to fully exploit the performance capabilities of these architectures. However, parallel programming models are not compatible with current MDE approaches, creating a gap between the MDE used to develop CPSs and the parallel programming models supported by novel and future embedded *** AMPERE project will bridge this gap by implementing a novel software architecture for the development of advanced CPSs. To do so, the proposed software architecture will be capable of capturing the definition of the components and communications described in the MDE framework, together with the non-functional properties, and transform it into key parallel constructs present in current parallel models, which may require extensions. These features will allow for making an efficient use of underlying parallel and heterogeneous architectures, while ensuring compliance with non-functional requirements, including those on real-time performance of the system.

国产异构众核处理器是我国打破国际技术壁垒,在高性能计算领域取得突破的关键环节。围绕国产超算的软件生态环境建设,采用智能源码转换的方法盘活海量多核架构的遗产代码是加速软件研发效率,推动领域发展的重要途径。针对国产运算核心不支持C++编译的现状,基于开源的ANTLR语言翻译工具,提出了一种面向异构众核处理器的智能化C++语言向C语言转换的辅助框架。该框架聚焦面向对象语言的关键特征,基于抽象语法树,实现了基类和继承类、函数定义、基于标签法的模板实例化以及部分STL库的C语言转换,建立了待转换代码的自动化标注体系,极大地提高了C++代码的转换和移植效率。通过对可衡量的并行计算基准应用BableStream进行自动转换和移植测试,证实了该转换框架的有效性。

Taking the airport de-icing resources optimization arrangements as the research object. When the airport de-icing resources are tense and large-scale delays occur at the airport, airport decision-makers need to consider both fairness and efficiency. At present, the FCFS method is widely used at home and abroad for de-icing scheduling, which has certain defects in fairness and efficiency. To improve the efficiency of airport de-icing and the fairness of resource allocation, through research and analysis of the theory and method of airport deicing process scheduling problem, a multi-objective mathematical optimization model with the minimum number of strands as the efficiency goal and the minimum weighted dissatisfaction value as the fairness goal is established. An algorithm based on fully combination thinking is designed, and a multi-objective decision-making strategy is proposed for decision makers to choose a satisfactory solution as the airport de-icing resource allocation scheme. Based on the algorithm simulation of the model and comparative analysis, the results show that this algorithm is able to solve the problem of aircraft de-icing scheduling problem, which can improve the resource utilization efficiency better compared with the existing manual scheduling method and ensure the fairness of resource allocation to a certain extent.

The execution environment of a real-world distributed system can change dramatically in terms of CPU workload, memory utilization, network traffic, etc. Therefore, an object-oriented distributed environment called Juice was developed in our previous research. Applications developed with Juice have the capability of reconfiguring itself during runtime in order to adapt changes of the execution environment. In this work, we propose a base level adaptable scheduling for the execution of self-reconfigurable objects in Juice. The adaptable scheduler can dynamically change the scheduling policy to meet the user's performance target when the execution environment changed. Evaluation results show that in a low CPU workload environment, FCFS (First Come First Serve) policy has a similar performance with SJF (Shortest Job First) policy and LJF (Longest Job First) policy with lower scheduling overhead. However, when the CPU workload becomes heavy, SJF or LJF has a better response time depending on the ratio of long jobs and the number of worker threads of Juice.

We employ probabilistic causality analysis to study the performance data of 301 students from the upper-level undergraduate parallel programming class at the University of Central Florida. To our surprise, we discover that good performance in our lower-level undergraduate programming CS-1 and CS-II classes is not a significant causal factor that contributed to good performance in our parallel programming class. On the other hand, good performance in systems classes like Operating Systems, Information Security, Computer Architecture, object oriented Software and Systems Software coupled with good performance in theoretical classes like Introduction to Discrete Structures, Artificial Intelligence and Discrete Structures-II are strong indicators of good performance in our upper-level undergraduate parallel programming class. We believe that such causal analysis may be useful in identifying whether parallel and distributed computing concepts have effectively penetrated the lower-level computer science classes at an institution.

With the growing number of cloud providers and the increasing market of cloud computing, it's more and more necessary to realize the cooperation and aggregation of clouds. JointCloud is a framework aiming at facilitating the consociation of various clouds on the market. And the JointCloud Collaboration environment (JCCE) is the ideal environment for global cloud providers. To realize the clouds cooperation, migration is one of the most important issues that have to be considered. Live migration has always been one of the major primitive operations of virtualization and has been discussed for long. Traditional works deal the migration mainly by using a host-driven migration method, the majority work of which is dominated by the hypervisor. However, as the age of cloud aggregation comes, traditional methods show their defects. In cloud aggregation environment, cloud providers may refuse to supply the migration service to grasp their customers, or the hypervisors are heterogeneous on the two sides of migration. Those problems raise challenges to traditional host-driven methods. In this paper, we propose Cuckoo Migration, a new selfmigration method using Intel new hardware feature. We leverage a special processor function, VMFUNC, to create a two-EPT architecture for the guest VM, so that the guest has a mirror memory space, which can be used as the duplication of memory. This paper mainly introduces how we build a two-EPT architecture for the guest and discusses how we leverage such architecture to do our self-migration.
