Road scene reconstruction is a fundamental and crucial module at the perception phase for autonomous vehicles, and will influence the later phase, such as object detection, motion planing and path planing. Traditionally, self-driving car uses Lidar, camera or fusion of the two kinds of sensors for sensing the environment. However, single Lidar or camera-based approaches will miss crucial information, and the fusion-based approaches often consume huge computing resources. We firstly propose a conditional Generative Adversarial Networks (cGANs)-based deep learning model that can rebuild rich semantic scene images from upsampled Lidar point clouds only. This makes it possible to remove cameras to reduce resource consumption and improve the processing rate. Simulation on the KITTI dataset also demonstrates that our model can reestablish color imagery from a single Lidar point cloud, and is effective enough for real time sensing on autonomous driving vehicles.

The majority of mainstream programming languages support parallel computing via extended libraries that require restructuring of sequential code. Library-based features are portable, but tend to be verbose and usually reduce the understandability and modifiability of code. On the contrary, approaches with language constructs promote simple code structures, hide the complexity of parallelization and avoid boilerplate code. However, language constructs normally impose additional development concepts and compilation requirements that may sacrifice the ease-of-use and portability. Therefore, frameworks that offer simple and intuitive concepts and constructs that are recognized by the standard compilers of a language can gain priority over other approaches. In this paper we discuss @PT (Annotation parallel Task), a parallel programming framework that proposes Java annotations, standard Java components, as its language constructs. @PT takes an intuitive object-oriented approach on asynchronous execution of tasks, and has a special focus on GUI-responsive applications. This paper presents the annotation-based programming interface of the framework and its fundamental parallelization concepts. Furthermore, it studies @PT in different parallel programming patterns, and evaluates its efficiency by comparing @PT with other Java parallelization approaches in a set of standard benchmarks.

DAG-based scheduling models have been shown to effectively express the parallel execution of current many-core heterogeneous architectures. However, their applicability to real-time settings is limited by the difficulties to find tight estimations of the worst-case timing parameters of tasks that may arbitrarily be preempted/migrated at any instruction. An efficient approach to increase the system predictability is to limit task preemptions to a set of pre-defined points. This limited preemption model supports two different preemption approaches, eager and lazy, which have been analyzed only for sequential task-sets. This paper proposes a new response time analysis that computes an upper bound on the lower priority blocking that each task may incur with eager and lazy preemptions. We evaluate our analysis with both, synthetic DAG-based task-sets and a real case-study from the automotive domain. Results from the analysis demonstrate that, despite the eager approach generates a higher number of priority inversions, the blocking impact is generally smaller than in the lazy approach, leading to a better schedulability performance.

In a message-passing system (MPS), components communicate through messages. However, both the time and order in which messages are delivered depend on the execution environment. The resulting nondeterminism may lead to concurrency defects such as message races, making it difficult to thoroughly test and debug MPS. This paper presents a new framework for testing components of an MPS for faults that involve the violation of any implicit user-intended receiving order of messages. The framework purposefully assesses possible interleavings by reordering incoming messages before delivering them to the tested target component. We evaluate three methods to support the reordering process: the blocking method intercepts and blocks each message until all its dependencies have occurred, the buffering method buffers a message until either its dependencies are observed or a predefined timeout expires, and the adaptive buffering dynamically adjusts its flushing period. All three methods are implemented inside QNX Neutrino, a popular embedded real-time operating system. The evaluation shows a 4x speedup over random testing with minimal run time overhead and only a few kilobytes of memory overhead. These results confirms the effectiveness and capability of the framework to uncover faults in real-world applications.

Complex situations and systems can be studied by using adequate models in simulation. An important aspect of models and the simulation software is the ability to use a wide range of possible input parameters. The simulation described in this paper is based on agile manufacturing by using transport robots and cheap reconfigurable production platforms, called equiplets. This setup makes agile manufacturing of different products in parallel *** simulation showed the maximum load of such a production environment as well as a proof of concept for the distributed approach for transport used.

Microsoft released its Robotics Developer Studio (MSRDS) and Visual Programming Language (VPL) in 2006. Microsoft VPL is service-oriented, uses workflow-based visual programming, and has strong support for parallel computing. It is a milestone and flagship in software engineering and in computer science education. Many universities and high schools have adopted VPL as a tool for teaching computing and engineering concepts and for programming robots. Unfortunately, as part of Microsoft's restructuring plan, the robotics division of Microsoft Research was suspended on September 22, 2014, leaving the Microsoft VPL community without updates and support. Arizona State University (ASU) is among the schools that adopted VPL since its first release in 2006. We started to find a solution to our VPL-based curriculum in 2014. This paper presents our research and development of a new visual programming language and its development environment: ASU VIPLE (Visual IoT/Robotics Programming Language environment). ASU VIPLE extends the discontinued Microsoft VPL to sustain our curriculum and to help the community with their VPL projects. ASU VIPLE supports LEGO EV3 and all IoT devices based on an open architecture. ASU VIPLE integrates engineering design process, workflow, fundamental programming concepts, control flow, parallel computing, event-driven programming seamlessly into the curriculum. It has been pilot tested at Arizona State University in summer 2015 and in spring 2016, as well as in several other universities.

Software is finding place in deeply embedded systems to large scale distributed systems of cloud service providers such as Amazon and Google. Due to the concurrent and distributed nature of this software, it is hard to test for correctness of such systems in a foolproof manner. Explicit state model checking is an approach in which we build a model of the system and specify the properties it should hold. Then we construct a state transition system from the model and check if it satisfies the specified properties. There are two kinds of properties of interest: safety and liveness. In this paper, we focus our attention on safety verification, which involves checking if the states that are generated in the transition system satisfy some predicate formulae specified in the form of assertions. The main problem here is that the number of states in the transition system grows exponentially with the number of bits required to store the state of a model at any given point time. So the available main memory even in a server class machine is not sufficient to model check nontrivial practical models. One approach to address this problem is by using resources from a distributed collection of machines. In this paper, we adopt this approach, by proposing a distributed safety property verification algorithm using the vertex centric programming model.

We present a denotational semantics designed with metric spaces and continuations for a simple concurrent language L-MB embodying a representative set of features encountered in membrane computing. L-MB is a multiset rewriting language. In L-MB multisets of objects are encapsulated in hierarchical structures of compartments, or regions, delimited by membranes. The behaviour of each membrane is specified by means of multiset rewriting rules. The semantics of parallel composition in L-MB is based on the concept of maximal parallelism. Computations proceed according to the multiset rewriting rules, nondeterministically choosing the rules and the objects. Membranes can be grouped into classes based on the rewriting rules that they encapsulate;L-MB also provides a primitive for membrane creation, or instantiation. In this sense, L-MB is similar to an object oriented language. We use continuations and a powerdomain construction to represent nondeterministic behavior. An element of a powerdomain is a collection of sequences of observables representing dynamic membrane structures. Our continuation semantics describes in a compositional manner the behavior of an L-MB program as a dynamic hierarchical system. As far as we know, this is the first paper that presents a metric denotational semantics for the combination of features embodied in L-MB.

Emerging hybrid accelerator architectures are often proposed for inclusion as components in an exascale machine, not only for performance reasons but also to reduce total power consumption. Unfortunately, programmers of these architectures face a daunting and steep learning curve that frequently requires learning a new language (e.g., OpenCL) or adopting a new programming model. Furthermore, the distributed (and frequently multi-level) nature of the memory organization of clusters of these machines provides an additional level of complexity. This paper presents preliminary work examining how Fortran coarray syntax can be extended to provide simpler access to accelerator architectures. This programming model integrates the Partitioned Global Address Space (PGAS) features of Fortran with some of the more task-oriented constructs in OpenMP 4.0 and OpenACC. It also includes the potential for compiler-based transformations targeting the Open Community Runtime (OCR) environment. We demonstrate these CoArray Fortran extensions (CAFe) by implementing a multigrid Laplacian solver and transforming this high-level code to a mixture of standard coarray Fortran and OpenCL kernels.
