In this paper, we present a new coordination model and a small set of programming notations for distributed programming that can be integrated in very different programming languages (imperative, declarative or object oriented). Used together, they allow the development of distributed programs in a compositional way, by assembling different independent pieces of (possibly preexisting and heterogeneous) code. This approach is in the spirit of many other similar proposals such as Linda, PCN, CC++, etc., but it allows multiparadigm and multilingual integration and provides a powerful set of concurrent programming techniques, inherited from Concurrent Logic Languages (CLLs) that can be efficiently implemented in distributed systems. The coordination model is based on Logic Channels; these are an evolution of the concept of shared logic variable used in CLLs that, with the same expressive power, can be more efficiently implemented in distributed systems.

We introduce a general purpose object oriented simulation environment which enables the study of different architectural configurations for servers. The simulation environment has been built on the top of AWESIME which provides a process oriented discrete event simulation environment. On the top of AWESIME, the simulator provides the base class definitions for major components required to build large scale high-performance computer systems, and a more advanced model of any particular component can be derived from these base classes and easily replaced with the old one. This feature enables rapid evaluation of alternatives in simulating different architectures. In addition this design allows studying a component of interest in various degrees of detail while keeping the other components at a coarse-level for a faster simulation time.

Describes a new workflow management system (WfMS) named CodAlf ("Code-name Alfa"). It is based on a completely decentralized system architecture. The approach especially enables the support of distributed organizations as well as dynamic growth and reconfiguration. CodAlf supports collaborative work and decentralization with the help of a comfortable type management. The implementation uses the OSF Distributed computing environment (DCE) as a basis. All components are modeled and implemented as objects of a distributed system on top of DC++, an object-oriented extension of DCE. In addition to runtime support, a workflow specification language and a workflow design tool are offered. The system is also compared to commercially-available WfMSs and to decentralized object-oriented approaches.

The paper presents the design and development of an object-oriented testbed for simulation and analysis of checkpointing and recovery schemes in distributed systems. An important contribution, of the testbed is a unified environment that provides a set of specialized components for easy and detailed simulation of checkpointing and recovery schemes. The testbed allows a designer to mix and match different components either to study the effectiveness of a particular scheme or to freely experiment with hybrid designs before the actual implementation. The testbed also facilitates the evaluation of interdependencies among the various parameters such as communication and application dynamics and their effect on the performance of checkpointing and recovery schemes. The implementation of the testbed as an extension of DEPEND which is an integrated design and fault-injection environment, provides for unique system-level dependability analysis under realistic fault conditions unlike existing simulation tools. The authors illustrate the versatility of the testbed by using four diverse applications, ranging from the comparison of performances of two checkpointing and recovery schemes to the study of the effect of checkpoint size.

Presents some results of the TANGRAM project, which prototypes and evaluates an environment supporting the object-oriented development of distributed multimedia applications based on the architectures developed by the "Telecommunications Information Networking Architecture Consortium" (TINA-C). These architectures suggest how to structure software for information networking. Their strength is the applicability for a wide range of telecommunication services and the independence of system and network technology. To enforce the approach taken in TINA-C, the concepts of abstract object-oriented frameworks are introduced and applied. Such frameworks can be a means to support the design and development of software sharing the advantages of object-orientation like reusability, scalability and customizability.

Tools for parallel systems today range from specification over debugging to performance analysis and more. Typically, they help the programmers of parallel algorithms from the early development stages to a certain level of program optimization. However in HPC (High Performance computing) today the end-user of massively parallel CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics)-programs has little or no support in his work. The scientific engineer who often runs his application on a parallel computer somewhere in the WAN (Wide Area Network) and visualizes the enormous amounts of simulation data on a graphical workstation in his LAN (Local Area Network) has needs which are by far not covered by state of the art visualization systems. The tool proposed here follows a strategy which differs completely from existing, batch-oriented and strictly sequential methods of the working process in the application cycle of parallel HPC applications. It allows both on-line visualization and interactive program steering of massively parallel CFD-applications. The parameters of the mathematical model and the numerical methods build objects of a database which can be accessed by an object-oriented graphical user interface via visualization and modification operators. Experiences with this new tool concept VIPER (VIsualization of parallel numerical simulation algorithms for Extended Research) applied on a real-world and industrial scientific application will be shown.

In this paper, we first evaluate the performance degradation caused by unequal bandwidths on the execution of conventional parallel algorithms such as the fast Fourier transform on an ATM-based Network of Workstations. We then present a strategy based on dynamic redistribution of data points to reduce the bottlenecks caused by unequal bandwidths. We also extend this strategy to deal with processor heterogeneity. Using analysis and simulation we show that there is a considerable reduction in the runtime if the proposed redistribution strategy is adopted. The basic idea presented in this paper can also be used to improve the runtimes of parallel applications in connection-oriented environments.

Heterogeneously distributed and parallel computing environments are highly dependent on hardware, data migration, and protocols. The result is significant difficulty in software reuse and portability across platforms, and an increased overall development effort. The appearance of a shared directory of unordered queues can be provided by integrating heterogeneous computers transparently. This integration provides a conducive environment for parallel and distributed application development, by abstracting the issues of hardware and communication. object-oriented technology is exploited to provide this seamless environment.

The concept of autonomous decentralized systems (ADS) which has the characteristics of online maintainability, online expandability and fault-tolerance has been successfully used in many distributed computing domains, such as: factory automation, traffic control, office automation, and nuclear power plants. In order to realize the benefits of object-oriented software development, a framework for ADS application software development based on the Common object Request Broker Architecture (CORBA), a set of standards for object systems in heterogeneous distributed environments, is presented. In this framework, CORBA is extended and built over ADS system software. A CASE environment for ADS application software development based on CORBA is also presented.
