The Distributed object migration environment (Dome) addresses three major issues of distributed parallel programming: ease of use, load balancing, and fault tolerance. Dome provides process control, data distribution, communication, and synchronization for Dome programs running in a heterogeneous distributed computing environment. The parallel programmer writes a C++ program using Dome objects which are automatically partitioned and distributed over a network of computers. Dome incorporates a load balancing facility that automatically adjusts the mapping of objects to machines at runtime, exhibiting significant performance gains over standard message passing programs executing in an imbalanced system. Dome also provides checkpointing of program state in an architecture independent manner allowing Dome programs to be checkpointed on one architecture and restarted on another.

Wide-area parallel processing systems will soon be available to researchers to solve a range of problems. In these systems, it is certain that host failures and other faults will be a common occurrence. Unfortunately, most parallel processing systems have not been designed with fault-tolerance in mind. Mentat is a high-performance object-oriented parallel processing system that is based on an extension of the data-flow model. The functional nature of data-flow enables both parallelism and fault-tolerance. In this paper, we exploit the data-flow underpinning of Mentat to provide easy-to-use and transparent fault-tolerance. We present results on both a small-scale network and a wide-area heterogeneous environment that consists of three sites: the National Center for Supercomputing Applications, the University of Virginia and the NASA Langley Research Center.

Discrete-event simulation is an important tool used for the performance evaluation of parallel systems. The space of tradeoffs is large however, when attempting to balance model fidelity and simulation execution tame. The paper describes a simulator-TAPS (Threaded Application parallel System Simulator)-that, in the context of threaded parallel computations, provides a spectrum of possibilities in this tradeoff space. TAPS is specifically designed to be parallelized; we discuss some crucial considerations regarding its parallelization.

As memory speeds grow at a considerably slower rate than processor speeds, memory accesses are starting to dominate the execution time of processors, and this will likely continue into the future. This trend will be exacerbated by growing miss rates due to commercial applications, object-oriented programming and micro-kernel based operating systems. We examine the use of coarse-grained multithreading to address this important problem in uniprocessor on-line transaction processing environments where there is a natural, coarse-grained parallelism between the tasks resulting from transactions being executed concurrently, with no application software modifications required. Our results suggest that multithreading can provide significant performance improvements for uniprocessor commercial computing environments.

The goal of this work is to simplify parallel application development, and thus ease the learning barriers faced by non-experts. It is especially useful where there is little data-parallelism to be recognized by a compiler. The applications programmer need learn the intricacies of only one primary subroutine in order to get the full benefits of the parallel interface. The applications programmer defines a high level concept, the task, that depends only on his application, and not on any particular parallel library. The task is defined by its three phases: (a) the task input, (b) sequential code to execute the task, and (c) any modifications of global variables that occur as a result of the task. In particular, side effects (which change global variable values) must not occur in phase (b). Forcing the user to re-organize his computation in these terms allows us to present the applications programmer with a single global environment visible to all processors (whether on a SMP or a NOW architecture), in the context of a masterslave architecture. Both a shared memory implementation (running on an SGI or SUN Solaris architecture) and a NOW memory implementation (running on top of MPI) are described. The implementations were tested by a naive program for integer factorization, and by a more sophisticated Todd-Coxeter coset enumeration. Integer factorization was chosen so as to exercise the major features of TOP-C in an unambiguous context.

Prefetching caches is an important technique for hiding the average latency of memory accesses by exploiting the overlap of processor computations with data accesses. Several software and hardware-based data prefetching approaches have been proposed. The main benefit of the hardware-based schemes is that they do not need support from the compiler and are transparent to the programmer. Under sequential prefetching, a cache miss causes some number of successive blocks to be prefetched. The number p of blocks following the missing block defines the degree of prefetching. The fixed sequential prefetching is the simplest form of the hardware-based prefetching techniques. In this approach, the degree of prefetching remains constant throughout the execution of the application program. Using a simple model of Petri nets for prefetching, we have obtained some results for fixed sequential prefetching on a bus-based multiprocessor. We change the degree of prefetching from 1 to 9. Our preliminary simulation results show that it is useful when the degree of prefetching has a value on the interval 1-3. Hence, fixed sequential prefetching with degree 3, offers significant performance improvements for bus-based multiprocessors.

HPC++ is a object-oriented programming environment dedicated to distributed memory parallel computers. It is based on a process model and integrates various parallel programming paradigms. Modularisation, interfaces and dynamic configuration are basic features. parallel prototypes may be encapsulated in subnets. In the context of an existing commercial CASE tool HPC++ will be used as target language for the translation from graphical design method into code. Within one year, exploitation of HPC++ will be started offering an object-oriented library on top of standard parallel runtime systems.

For a long time efficient use of parallel computers has been hindered by dependencies introduced in software through low-level implementation practice. In this paper we present a programming environment and language called object-Math (object oriented Mathematical language for scientific computing), which aims at eliminating this problem by allowing the user to represent mathematical equation-based models directly in the system. The system performs analysis of mathematical models to extract parallelism and automatically generates parallel code for numerical solution. In the context of industrial applications in mechanical analysis, we have so far primarily explored generation of parallel code for solving systems of ordinary differential equations (ODEs), in addition to preliminary work on generating code for solving partial differential equations. Two approaches to extracting parallelism have been implemented and evaluated: extracting parallelism at the equation system level and at the single equation level, respectively. We found that for several applications the corresponding systems of equations do not partition well into subsystems. This means that the equation system level approach is of restricted general applicability. Thus, we focused on the equation-level approach which yielded significant parallelism for ODE systems solution. For the bearing simulation applications we present here, the achieved speedup is however critically dependent on low communication latency of the parallel computer.

During the initial two years project, significant progress has been made in all of these areas.
