Probably the largest single factor inhibiting the development of an environment supporting the full control engineering design cycle has been the lack of widely recognised standards in this field. The issue of standardisation can be viewed on two levels, the representation of the dynamic system model itself and the provision of database facilities, including those high-level facilities required for model management. This paper concentrates on the latter, examines the requirements of the user in this respect and describes a user interface to meet these requirements. The impact of current initiatives in open architecture development on future computer-aided control engineering software development is examined.< >

The GAME system is a programming environment being developed at University College London as part of the major European project, aimed at promoting and demonstrating the use of genetic algorithms in real world applications. GAME is target at the development and execution of complex sequential, concurrent or parallel applications, based on the genetic algorithm (GA) paradigm. Its object-oriented design and implementation provide the required levels of abstraction to describe and configure applications for a broad range of domains. GAME addresses the basic requirements involved in the design cycle of a GA application; it offers a set of genetic-oriented data structures, objects and straightforward programming interfaces that permit the implementation of a variety of GAs and parallel GAs. The underlying infrastructure provides the mechanisms for problem independent manipulation of data structures, monitoring, and execution on a virtual computing environment supporting multiple parallel computation models. Applications are constructed from parameterised libraries containing algorithms and genetic operators modules. GAME is highly customisable and its libraries can be easily expanded with the inclusion of new parameterised modules. Novice users can rapidly configure and execute pre-defined applications by simply setting up few parameters. Programmers can create new applications by combining pre-defined algorithms and genetic operators, or by directly programming new algorithms using the set of C++ classes provided. A graphic interface and monitoring facilities are also available in GAME.< >

We are pursuing research on programming languages for massively parallel processing. The objective of the research is the following two points according to the top level research objective of our Massively parallel Processing Principle Research Project: firstly to develop a prototype of a massively parallel programming language and compiler system, which is competitive to commercial language systems like data parallel C, Fortran D or HPF; and secondly to explore a massively parallel computation model, and design an experimental language as an implementation of the newly explored massively parallel computation model.< >

Eunice/ITRON is a control system development environment, whose target machines are ITRON machines. The core of Eunice/ITRON is a "full-lifecycle-support" language Nike. In Eunice/ITRON, except final performance tuning, development from abstract description level through semi-implementation level can be done on utilities-rich UNIX workstations. This way rapid and efficient development of control systems is attained. Nike is a concurrent object-oriented language. Dynamic behavior of each object can be described in state-transition model. In addition, to let the development process go forward and backward seamlessly, Nike provides refinement mechanism regarding states and their transitions, which can be validated at run-time. It not only conduces early executability, but also is the major driving force of refinement. Our implementation of the Nike compiler on an ITRON2-compliant operating system is discussed; and also that of Nikechat, a graphical executor under the X Window, of the system specified in Nike.< >

Various information models deal with specific aspects of Computer-Aided Control Engineering (CACE). There is a need to integrate these models into a single view which covers all levels of CACE activity. In this paper a number of existing models for CACE data structures and project management are surveyed and their most important aspects are identified. An information model is then introduced which serves to propose a unified view of the CACE problem. The model adopts a middle-level view and bridges the gaps between the existing models. After reviewing the types of control engineering information handled by this model, its role in an integrated CACE environment is discussed.< >

parallel architectures based on distributed memory encourage the modeling of software systems as an ensemble of interacting objects. A true object-oriented design results in an open, application-oriented system. object orientation (i.e. inheritance) then must be extended into a distributed environment. An extremely lightweight system structure is the consequence, leading to a parallel computing surface. The paper introduces the notion of dual objects, an object model which supports the structuring of both parallel programs and parallel operating systems. The model does not prescribe any consistency measures for arbitrarily replicated state information. It promotes inheritance to keep consistency in an application-oriented manner. © 1993 IEEE.

The authors present an object-oriented framework for constructing parallel implementations of stencil algorithms. This framework simplifies the development process by encapsulating the common aspects of stencil algorithms in a base stencil class so that application-specific derived classes can be easily defined via inheritance and overloading. In addition, the stencil base class contains mechanisms for parallel execution. The result is a high-performance, parallel, application-specific stencil class. The authors present the design rationale for the base class and illustrate the derivation process by defining two subclasses, an image convolution class and a PDE solver. The classes have been implemented in Mentat, an object-oriented parallel programming system that is available on a variety of platforms. Performance results are given for a network of Sun SPARCstation IPCs. © 1993 IEEE.

The authors describe a new portable algorithm for parallel circuit extraction. The algorithm is built as part of the ongoing ProperCAD project: a portable object-oriented parallel environment for CAD applications that is built on top of the CHARM system. The algorithm, unlike prior approaches like PACE is asynchronous and is based on a coarse-grained dataflow execution model. Performance of circuit extraction is presented on four parallel machines: an Encore Multimax, a Sequent Symmetry, a NCUBE 2 hypercube, and a network of Sun Sparc workstations. The extractor runs unchanged on all these machines. © 1993 IEEE.

This paper presents a general design for providing access to remote devices, pipes, and FIFOs, within a distributed computing environment. Though the design is presented in terms of SVR4 and Sun ONC, it is sufficiently general to be built upon almost any underlying Unix system and distribution architecture. The design is applicable to all types of devices, and special attention is given to STREAMS oriented devices. © 1993 IEEE.
