We develop an approach to find the power set of a given set based on creating disjunctive normal form clauses (DNF) and a round robin load balancing algorithm in a parallel computing environment. Given a problem of size n, the DNF algorithms and the round robin load balance, we will compute the entire power set in O [GRAPHICS] iterations, concurrently. This reduction in iterations is significantly less than O(2(n)) for the sequential algorithms that compute the power set found in Computer Science text books or found in internet searches. The round robin load balance algorithm assigns less than left perpendicularn/2right perpendicular. processors to the power set problem of size n. This paper gives examples to the power set problem for a relatively large set.

In heterogeneous computing systems, general purpose CPUs are coupled with co-processors of different architectures, like GPUs and FPGAs. Applications may take advantage of this heterogeneous device ensemble to accelerate execution. However, developing heterogeneous applications requires specific programming models, under which applications unfold into code components targeting different computing devices. OpenCL is one of the main programming models for heterogeneous applications, set apart from others due to its openness, vendor independence and support for different co-processors. In the original OpenCL application model, a heterogeneous application starts in a certain host node, and then resorts to the local co-processors attached to that host. Therefore, co-processors at other nodes, networked with the host node, are inaccessible and cannot be used to accelerate the application. rOpenCL (remote OpenCL) overcomes this limitation for a significant set of the OpenCL 1.2 API, offering OpenCL applications transparent access to remote devices through a TPC/IP based network. This paper presents the architecture and the most relevant implementation details of rOpenCL, together with the results of a preliminary set of reference benchmarks. These prove the stability of the current prototype and show that, in many scenarios, the network overhead is smaller than expected.

Blockchain technologies are on the rise, and Hyperledger Fabric is one of the most popular permissioned blockchain platforms. In this paper, we re-architect the validation phase of Fabric based on our analysis from fine-grained breakdown of the validation phase's latency. Our optimized validation phase uses a chaincode cache during validation of transactions, initiates state database reads in parallel with validation of transactions, and writes to the ledger and databases in parallel. Our experiments reveal performance improvements of 2x for CouchDB and 1.3x for LevelDB. Notably, our optimizations can be adopted in a future release of Hyperledger Fabric.

Workflow reconstruction through logs is crucial for troubleshooting targeted distributed systems. It is also challenging to extract enough information from logs and keep a concise view, which makes manual log analysis hard to practice. However, currently popular tools rely on identifier-based log parsing, leaving a large amount of workflow information unexploited. In this paper, we propose a log extraction approach NLog, which utilizes a natural language processing based approach to obtain the key information from log messages and identify the same object in logs generated by different statements without any domain knowledge. We propose to use keyed message, a new log storage structure to store the parsed logs. We implement NLog and apply it to distributed data analytics frameworks Spark and MapReduce. Evaluation results show that NLog can accurately identify the objects in log messages even without explicit identifiers. By using keyed messages, users can have a concise as well as flexible view of the workflows.

Energy efficiency and energy conservation are one of the most crucial constraints for meeting the 20MW power envelope desired for exascale systems. Towards this, most of the research in this area has been focused on the utilization of user-controllable hardware switches such as per-core dynamic voltage frequency scaling (DVFS) and software controlled clock modulation at the application level. In this paper, we present a tuning plugin for the Periscope Tuning Framework which integrates fine-grained autotuning at the region level with DVFS and uncore frequency scaling (UFS). The tuning is based on a feed-forward neural network which is formulated using Performance Monitoring Counters (PMC) supported by x86 systems and trained using standardized benchmarks. Experiments on five standardized hybrid benchmarks show an energy improvement of 16.1% on average when the applications are tuned according to our methodology as compared to 7.8% for static tuning.

DISTANA - a distributed spatio-temporal artificial neural network architecture - learns to model and predict spatio-temporal time series dynamics. It learns in a parallel, spatially distributed manner while employing a mesh of recurrent, neural prediction kernels (PKs). Individual PKs predict the local data stream and exchange information laterally. DISTANA essentially assumes that generally applicable causes, which may be locally modified, generate the observed data. We show that DISTANA scales and generalizes to large problem spaces, can approximate complex dynamics, and is robust to overfitting, outperforming other competitive ANNs. © ESANN 2020 - Proceedings, 28th European symposium on Artificial Neural Networks, Computational Intelligence and Machine Learning.

CRDTs are distributed data types that make eventual consistency of a distributed object possible and non adhoc. Geo-distributed systems are spread across multiple data centers at different geographic locations to ensure availability and performance despite network partitions. These systems must accept updates at any replica and propagate these updates asynchronously to every other replica. Conflict-Free Replicated Data Types (CRDTs) ensures eventual consistency in the replicas despite asynchronous delivery of updates. Extending this idea to fog computing servers where connection reliability is low, eventual consistency amongst the servers is required. We configure Kubernetes, an open-source container orchestration system used for automating deployment, scaling, and management of containerized applications, and use it for cluster deployment of CRDT based low resource intensive AntidoteDB can be used for deployment on fog servers to ensure eventual consistency amongst these servers. We have developed an automated benchmarking tool for benchmarking edge computing applications.

The 2013 ACM/IEEE curriculum guidelines highlight the importance of teaching parallel computing to undergraduates in higher education. Universities have responded to this need, but there remains a hole in most curricula. While techniques for parallelizing code and using tools such as MPI and OpenMP seem to be well covered, concepts of shared versus distributed memory and race conditions are often taught only at an abstracted level. Using the educational operating system Embedded Xinu, students can write ARM assembly code that makes use of instructions meant specifically for multicore interaction. By having students implement exercises such as the coupon collector's problem, they can gain a much deeper understanding of potential issues with sharing memory and maintaining cache coherence. This added curriculum fits with existing computer organization courses and helps to prepare students for future work in parallel computing. This paper presents specific enhancements used with the Embedded Xinu operating system and its associated ARM Playground, as well as a pilot study using the new curriculum with undergraduates in a typical hardware systems course.

In current inverters of microgrids controlled by virtual synchronous generator (VSG) method, the characteristics of the DC sources are usually ignored which leads its lower utilization. In this paper, a power distribution strategy is proposed for an islanded microgrid consisting of parallel PV (photovoltaic)/Battery-VSG units to maximize the utilization of PV generation. The proposed control strategy is verified by building a real-time RT-LAB simulation model with second control for the microgrid with two parallel PV/Battery-VSG units. The simulation results show that this strategy can guarantee the maximize use of PV unit by dynamically adjusting inverter control parameters. In addition, the real-time simulation platform based on RT-LAB can improve hardware solution ability and provide faster method to verify the effectiveness of control algorithms for the complicated power electronic systems like microgrids than by using MATLAB.
