R-tree is a foundational data structure used in spatial databases and scientific databases. With the advancement of Internet and computer architectures, in-memory data processing for R-tree in distributed systems has become a common platform. We have observed new performance challenges to process R-tree as the amount of multidimensional datasets become increasingly huge. Specifically, an R-tree server can be heavily overloaded while the network and client CPU are lightly loaded, and vice versa. In this paper, we present the design and implementation of Catfish, an RDMA enabled R-tree for low latency and high throughput by adaptively utilizing the available network bandwidth and computing resources to balance the workloads between clients and servers. We design and implement two basic mechanisms of using RDMA for the client-server R-tree. First, in the fast messaging design, we use RDMA writes to send R-tree requests to the server and let server threads process R-tree requests to achieve low query latency. Second, in the RDMA offloading design, we use RDMA reads to offload tree traversal from the server to the client, which rescues the server as it is overloaded. We further develop an adaptive scheme to effectively switch an R-tree search between fast messaging and RDMA offloading, maximizing the overall performance. Our experiments show that the adaptive solution of Catfish on InfiniBand significantly outperforms R-tree that uses only fast messaging or only RDMA offloading in both latency and throughput. Catfish can also deliver up to one order of magnitude performance over the traditional schemes using TCP/IP on 1 Gbps and 40 Gbps Ethernet. We make a strong case to use RDMA to effectively balance workloads in distributed systems for low latency and high throughput.

We propose a model for biometric systems with a multiuser access structure, where after enrollment only pre-defined authorized sets of participants are allowed to access the system upon presenting their biometrics. Two types of system design are considered for the enrollment. In the first one, the participants must simultaneously present their biometrics to enroll in the system. In the second one, each participant can individually enroll in the system, which is more convenient for systems with a large number of participants. For these two types of enrollment and the presence of a multiuser access structure, the fundamental trade-off between security and privacy leakage is studied.

High-power modular dc-dc converters are key enabling components for interconnection of MVDC and LVDC grids, for which both the efficiency and controllability are of great importance. Although the state-of-the-art modular dual-active bridge (DAB) dc-dc converter presents a high controllability with the soft-switching turn-on operation, the peak efficiency is ultimately limited by turn-off losses of semiconductor devices. On the other hand, unregulated series resonant converters (SRCs) operating under the resonant condition can realize a very high efficiency, but presents no controllability of the dc voltage. This paper presents a novel modular dc-dc converter topology with the input-series-output-parallel (ISOP) configuration, which combines SRCs as the majority modules for the bulky power transfer and only a small number of DAB converter modules for the dc-voltage control. Benefiting from the hybrid circuit topology, the proposed converter can achieve a higher efficiency than the modular DAB converter with a reduced complexity in the communication and control, while maintaining the controllability of the dc voltage. The operation principle of this topology and optimization procedure of key design parameters are presented. Finally, the performance of the proposed hybrid modular dc-dc converter is verified by both simulative studies and experiments of a laboratory converter prototype.

In islanded microgrid, when multiple converters are operated in parallel under the unbalanced load conditions, it is challenging to obtain both high voltage quality and current sharing, especially including unbalanced current sharing, at the same time. Moreover, when load voltage is controlled to be balanced, the instantaneous double-frequency power ripples caused by negative sequence current will be coupled to DC side, resulting in the ripple of the DC voltage or current, which may create instability of the system, lower its efficiency and shorten the lifetime of DC sources. To address these issues, the improved three-phase converter is adopted as a microgrid converter in this paper. The positive and negative sequence equivalent circuits are introduced. On this basis, the distribution principles of the current sharing and double-frequency pulsating power are investigated. A distribution strategy is proposed to achieve proportional distribution of average power by using positive sequence power droop, and proportional distribution of negative sequence current and double-frequency pulsating power based on the combination of negative sequence virtual impedance and active power decoupling control, where the AC side capacitors of converters are used to proportionally supply the double-frequency pulsating power caused by the unbalanced loads. Therefore, it greatly reduces the ripples on the DC link while high voltage quality and current sharing are obtained. The correctness of the method is verified by simulation and experiment.

In edge computing applications, data is distributed across several nodes. Failed nodes mean losing part of the data which may hamper edge computing. Node repair is needed for frequent nodes failure in edge computing systems. Codes with both the combination property (CP) and Binary Zigzag Decodable (BZD) are referred to as CP-BZD codes. In this paper, without adding extra checking bits, new coding constructions of CP-BZD codes are proposed to repair the failed node in distributed storage systems. All constructed codes can be decoded by the zigzag-decoding algorithm. Numerical analysis shows that compared with the original CP-BZD codes, our proposed schemes obtain better repair efficiency.

In this paper we introduce SpiderWeb, a new methodology for building high speed soft networks on FPGAs. There are many reasons why greater internal bandwidth is an increasingly important issue for FPGAs. Compute density is rapidly growing on FGPA, from historical precisions such as single precision floating point, to the massive parallel low precision operations required by machine learning inference. It is difficult for current FPGA fabrics, with designs developed using standard methods and tool flows, to provide a reliable way of generating wide and/or high speed data distribution busses. In contrast, SpiderWeb uses a specific NoC generation methodology which provides a predictable area and performance for these structures, with area and speed accurately known before compile time. The generated NoCs can be incorporated into large, complex designs, implemented with standard design flows, without compromising routability of the system.

The partitioned global address space memory model has bridged the gap between shared and distributed memory, and with this bridge comes the ability to adapt shared memory concepts, such as non-blocking programming, to distributed systems such as supercomputers. To enable nonblocking algorithms, we present ways to perform scalable atomic operations on objects in remote memory via remote direct memory access and pointer compression. As a solution to the problem of concurrent-safe reclamation of memory in a distributed system, we adapt Epoch-Based Memory Reclamation to distributed memory and implement it such that it supports global-view programming. This construct is designed and implemented for the Chapel programming language but can be adapted and generalized to work on other languages and libraries.

The multi-parallel chopper system is commonly used in modern MW-level wind turbine converters. Even though the chopper is usually considered as robust and reliable, the semiconductor module can suffer critical junction temperature in extreme fault ride through (FRT) events. This paper proposes a method to monitor and identify if the individual chopper is functioning, degraded, or failed by means of collecting and comparing the parallel semiconductors' temperatures during FRT events. A simulation model is created in PLCES, the accuracy of which is further validated by a dedicated experimental setup including an infrared camera. The proposed method is verified by PLECS simulations.

In speech emotion recognition, the features extracted by handmade design are generally low-level, they may not be enough to distinguish subjective emotions, and speech signals are usually have time sequence and every frame signal has a different role. Therefore, this paper aims at the above problems, a DCNN BiGRU self-attention model is proposed. The model combines the spatial characteristics of convolutional neural networks, the advantages of circulating neural network in learning time series data, and the characteristics of attention mechanisms that can learn feature weights, thereby improving the accuracy of speech emotion recognition. This model achieved an average recognition rate of 89.53% and 91.74% in the EMO-DB and CASIA databases, and through comparison with other literatures, it is proved that this model can obtain more ideal results in speech emotion recognition.
