distributed storage systems apply erasure-tolerant codes to guarantee reliable access to data despite failures of storage resources. While many codes can be mapped to XOR operations and efficiently implemented on common microprocessors, only a certain number of codes are usually implemented in a certain system (out of a wide variety of different codes). The ability to include new codes easily, to exchange codes and finally to select codes for several types of data is desirable. To provide this flexibility, a parameterization is used which allows the definition of different XOR based codes, and beyond different styles of en- and decoding. The parameters include (i) the assignment of data and redundancy elements to the storage resources and (ii) a description of en- and decoding algorithms with XOR based equations. The parameters of a certain code can be changed and in addition a wide variety of codes can be described and included in a storage system implementation. The proposed parameterization adopts the ability of codes like EVEN- ODD, Cauchy-R/S and Hover codes to map to distributed resources. Furthermore, en- and decoding algorithms can be described differently, either for minimal coding cost or for minimal coding time on parallel systems.

With the rapid development of the Internet and communication technology, huge data is accumulated. Short text such as conversation in chatting room and email is common in such data. It is useful to cluster such short documents to get the structure of the data or to help building other data mining applications. But most of the current clustering algorithms can not get acceptable clustering accuracy since key words appear with a low frequency in short documents. It is also difficult to process high-dimensional text data in very large databases. In this paper, we propose a hierarchical clustering algorithm which uses domain ontology to improve clustering accuracy. This clustering algorithm is also parallel and frequent-concept based which makes it scalable to very large high-dimensional text data. Our experimental study shows that this algorithm is more accurate than other hierarchical clustering algorithms when clustering short conversations. Furthermore, this algorithm has good scalability and it can be used to process even huge data.

As a result of the multimedia rapid growth, there has been a huge increase in the amount of information generated and shared by people all over the world. Demand for large-scale multimedia storage system is growing rapidly. This paper describes the design and implementation of the Two-level metadata server for distributed multimedia storage system (DMSS). The DMSS divides the logical view of the stored data from the physical view. The logical view is managed by the metadata server which is called GMS (global metadata server), and the physical view is managed by a component of storage servers which is called LMS (local metadata server). Adopting LMS, each storage server can maintain its own storage resources and metadata and data independently, and can offer storage service independently. The DMSS allows the application servers to access the storage servers directly and in parallel providing very high performance.

Current hardware transactional memory systems seek to simplify parallel programming, but assume that large transactions are rare, so it is acceptable to penalize their performance or concurrency. However, future programmers may wish to use large transactions more often in order to integrate with higher-level programming models (e.g., database transactions) or perform selected I/O operations. To prevent the "small transactions are common" assumption from becoming self-fulfilling, this paper contributes TokenTM - an unbounded HTM that uses the abstraction of tokens to precisely track conflicts on an unbounded number of memory blocks. TokenTM implements tokens with new mechanisms, including metastate fission/fusion and fast token release. TokenTM executes small transactions fast, executes concurrent large transactions with no penalty to nonconflicting transactions, and gracefully handles paging, context switching, and System-V-style shared memory.

This paper is part of a larger project on MOSIX cluster computing. This paper also is a continuation of the previously published paper regarding MOSIX potential performance and threat (M. Hakim, J. Jais, 2008). The main focuses are on MOSIX implementation, survey and benchmark on MOSIX performance. In this paper, the information is presented in a broad to narrow approach, which is from an overview of shared network and all the way to the MOSIX. We also test several testing algorithm to benchmark the performance of MOSIX in order to find out the real potential of MOSIX distributed operating system.

In spite of continuous improvements at running production systems, down times have to be reduced further. The challenge is to find means to implement changes online which denotes avoid stopping and restarting the system. As changes on running systems are difficult to handle and may result in lost states a solution is to replicate the running system, modify it in parallel and reintegrate the changes reusing the previous states. In this paper we present an approach of replicating a running data processing system with the special focus on the state retaining reintegration of the modified algorithms. Recovery mechanisms for sliding window operations are proposed and investigated by means of simulation.

This paper presents a scalable control system for a unified micro-cellular network named MM-MAN (mobile multimedia metropolitan area network) in which fast terminals are provided high-bit rate IP packet transfer. In our previous papers, proposed schemes to guarantee smooth connections to fast movers in spite of frequent movement are LMC (logical macro cell) and parallel polling. LMC-a multicast group of adjacent micro-cells and pollings are emitted from all BSs of the same LMC create a symmetric environment as a virtual single cell so the cell-to-cell movement of a mobile terminal within an LMC can be passed over. Detail of the distributed control for mobility management is described in this article. An extended LMC is introduced to conduct pre-downloading of packets and to allow distributed processing for the LMC switchover. However, the radio active channel is manipulated only at BSs in the LMC range but not in the extended LMC to save radio resources due to the overhead of parallel polling. If the polling response comes to the BS which differs from the central cellpsilas BS of the LMC, this BS will be placed to become the central cell of the new LMC, and polling acknowledgement is multicast to the new extended LMC. The neighboring BS on the movement direction of the target mobile terminal (MT) can realize movement of the MT, and starts actions to join the new LMC by itself without help from the centralized control. These procedures can hide the delay in the cell-to-cell movement of the terminal even when it goes out from the LMC, and guarantee scalable and high-performance control over micro-cellular network. The simulation results tells the handover latency is less than 5 ms, and the throughput for MT in case of the continuous multimedia like moving picture is 2 Mbps over the 54 Mbps wireless interface.

Because of a distribution of copyrighted contents and private information on IT enable networks, copyright management and control of private information for the distribution became serious problems. In this paper, we show the relationship between rights management and the control of private information, and investigate the network that is suitable for them. We propose the method of communication between an information distributor and an agent accompanying the information over an anonymous channel. Moreover, an anonymous-routing method for locating a position of distributed data has been proposed based on traces of routing history. By applying this method to the system that treats the private information, owners of information can control the purpose of content usage and protect the integrity of information.

This article introduces a novel distributed simulation system for diverse simulation tasks of communications systems. With the help of its parallel distributed structure and outstanding computing power, many computationally expensive simulations can be completed in an acceptable duration. Moveover, its cooperative infrastructure is suitable for simulation tasks in multiuser scenarios or other tasks in a closed loop system. In this contribution, the general platform is applied to predict the downlink performance of a 3rd generation partnership project (3GPP) long-term-evolution (LTE) system in an indoor scenario. To achieve the required channel impulse responses (CIRs) a commercial ray tracing tool named dasiawireless insitepsila from Remcom is used. Finally two different methods to obtain the throughput are compared, first one based on the signal to noise ratio and second one based on the full channel impulse response information.
