With Web services predicted to become distributed computing architecture in near future, maintainability of the Web applications (WAs) will rank high on selection criteria while choosing a platform for development of a WA. The goal of this paper is to evaluate maintainability of small-scale WAs built on J2EE, .NET and Ruby On Rails (RoR). The maintainability criteria considered comprised of modifiability, testability, understandability and portability. We found that the RoR implementation fared better on modifiability, testability, and understandability, while J2EE implementation was the most portable. The results led us to comment on the maintainability of small WAs with respect to underlying architecture and development environments the three platforms provide. We believe that results are expected to vary for medium and large-size WAs. The work included here is part of an effort to build a decision framework for platform selection for WAs.

Geospatial processing has been extended to the Web environment. In conjunction with observations fed from live sensors, workflows can be used to connect the sensors observations to the product at the user's end. In the work described in this paper, the Business Process Execution Language (BPEL) was used as a script language to describe workflows. OGC Sensor Web Enablement specifications have been used to enable the retrieval of sensor observations, implementation of geospatial processing services, and integration of Web processing services. The framework developed was used to study a case of severe weather detection and tracking. The OGC Web Coverage Service (WCS) and Web Feature Service (WFS), both with transaction support, are used to manage satellite observations and geographic features. The OGC Web Processing Service (WPS) is used to manage geospatial processing services. The resulting workflow demonstrated the reusability of geospatial Web services, the capability for transactions and asynchrony, and the efficiency of parallelism and distributed computing.

How to get a better balance between the push and pull of the event data is the common goal of the various data dissemination algorithms in wireless sensor networks (WSNs). And the characteristics of the any-type query in WSNs is different from the All-type query. At this basis , the load of the system hotspot should be further decreased and the number of the event data replicas should be reduced. In the paper, two well-known typical structured and unstructured data dissemination algorithms (DCS and CN) are analyzed and their advantages and disadvantages are figured out. At the same time, by combining the push- pull strategies of the two algorithms, two new data dissemination algorithms are proposed based on the sequential DCS and CN push-pull strategies for the ANY-type queries in the different application situation in WSNs. The two new algorithms are Sequential-Dcs- Cnl(SDCl) and Sequential -Dcs-Cn2(SDC2). They have resolved the problems of the high load of the hotspot and the large number of the event data replicas and the low energy efficiency of queries on the premise that ensuring the balance between the push and pull. The theoretical analyses and simulations show that the performance of SDC1 is much better than that of the existing algorithms, and that ofSDC2 is close to DCS, but is more fit for the case of unevenly distributed events than SDC1. So they are much more appropriate for the WSNs which are large-scale and have large volume of data to be dealt with, and they are two energy-efficient data dissemination algorithms.

Effectively managing concurrent execution is one of the biggest challenges for future wireless sensor/actor networks (WSANs): for safety reasons concurrency needs to be tamed to prevent unintentional nondeterministic executions, on the other hand, for real-time guarantees concurrency needs to be boosted to achieve timeliness. We propose a transactional, optimistic concurrency control framework for WSANs that enables understanding of a system execution as a single thread of control, while permitting the deployment of actual execution over multiple threads distributed on several nodes. By exploiting the atomicity and broadcast properties of singlehop wireless communication, we provide a lightweight implementation of our transactional framework on the motes platform.

A simple technique to estimate the position of a mobile node inside a building is based on the Received Signal Strength (RSS). In previous publications, we investigated the effectiveness of using circular array antennas and beamforming in order to enable an access point to estimate the position of a mobile inside a building. We also discussed the feasibility of using model-based radio maps to reduce the need for extensive offline measurements. In this paper, a positioning algorithm based on the relative order of the received signal strengths is discussed. This algorithm in conjunction with the ray-tracing propagation model can have promising performance for indoor environments and essentially eliminates the needs for an extensive set of a priori measurement, training or intricate calibration.

Data management in mobile computing environments poses great challenges to the database researchers. One of the important challenges is to provide a data replication solution that maintains the consistency and improves the availability of replicated data. This paper addresses this problem for large scale distributed information systems that operate in mobile environments. Our solution represents a new binary hybrid replication strategy, in terms of its components and approach. The new strategy encompasses two components: replication architecture to provide a solid infrastructure for improving data availability and replication method to transfer data updates in a manner that achieves the consistency of data. The new strategy is a hybrid of both pessimistic and optimistic replication approaches, in order to exploit the features of each. The proposed strategy supports higher data availability and lower rate of inconsistencies as well as supports the mobility of users.

The increasing utilization of geospatial information to facilitate emergency decisions requires a Geographic Information System (GIS) to process large amounts of geospatial data in a timely fashion. Real-time GIS applications require sub-second response time to analytical operations on large and highly dynamic datasets for timely decisions. Leveraging idle workstations is a feasible method to meet the processing challenge. Grid computing, a new computing infrastructure, provides a potential solution to harness idle workstations and other resources in a flexible manner. This paper describes our research on using grid computing to support near real-time geospatial applications with near real-time routing as an example. A grid with 2, 4, 8, 22 CPU cores are used to test the grid performance. It is demonstrated that the grid-enabled geospatial applications can enhance the computing efficiency by harnessing distributed computing resources.

Transaction scheduling and concurrency control are two important problems in a distributed environment. A lot of research has been focused on the problems recently, and many models and measures have been proposed. However, some of them didn't fit for grid environment, as grid architecture is a new and distinguished from conventional distributed computing by its heterogeneous, dynamic and autonomous properties. In this paper, we propose a three-level transaction scheduling model for grid database, which not only shows the autonomy of grid but also lightens the pressure of communication and grid scheduler. We consider communication time of a transaction, user's priority and the number of DB sites accessed by the transaction as a priority of the transaction, and give scheduling algorithms for concurrency transaction, which not only supports correctness of the data, but also improves the effectiveness of the system. Petri nets are promising tools for modeling and analysis information processing systems that are characterized as being concurrent, parallel and distributed. We use a dynamic time colored Petri net (DTCPN) to model each level's transaction scheduling and get a DTCPN model for three-level transaction scheduling model of grid database using sharing composition. Finally, we get some important results such as miss rate of transactions by analyzing reachability of Petri nets.

Single processor technology has been evolving across last decades, but due to physical limitations of chip manufacturing process, the industry is pursuing alternatives to sustain computational power growth,including the creation of multi-core systems. parallel computing targets problems that are scalable and possibly distributed, dividing the problem into smaller pieces. This approach may be explored to satisfy real-time constraints required by real time physics simulation. This work introduces an optimal solution to implement accurate simulation of deformable bodies in real time. This is accomplished through the use of a meshless simulation technique, known as Point Based Animation, implemented using a parallel framework:the NVIDIA Compute Unified Device Architecture(CUDA). Our implementation showed significative improvements on performance in comparison to the former CPU one: impressive speedups around 20times could be achieved in the simulation of deformable bodies with 575 physical elements (phyxels) and53,504 surface elements (surfels).

In this paper we present details of a proposal to develop standards for the processes involved in image information mining (IIM) and also to initiate a discussion within the IIM community to evolve and develop specifications. The proposal is based on the current Services Oriented Architectures (SOA's) which provides loosely coupled services that enable cross domain information integration and querying. Web services decouple objects that are platform specific and facilitate interactions among platform independent objects, which are able to access data from anywhere on the Web. They rely on loose, rather than tight coupling among the web components which enables a flexible and dynamic interchange in open, distributed web environments. The Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) provides a platform for government organizations, academia, and industry to come to a consensus and standardization of geospatial technologies. This paper proposes that image information mining systems need standardization in terms of OGC specifications and in describing the IIM framework in an OGC perspective. This would facilitate interoperability with several existing OGC web services and foster the clear separation of the business logic layer and presentation layer.
