While in the past years free-software has gained some acceptance in the domain of medical applications it has been mainly focused on quite typical IT-infrastructure cases -may that be billing systems,data warehousing,databases and content management systems a second area where free software has made prominent entrance has been in the area of imaging and high-volume data *** the area of medical devices,with rare exceptions,free-software is still quite underrepresented -in part due to acceptance but in part also due to plain technical ***/Linux,real-time and embedded variants and many free-software projected have made there way into medical applications -but is Free-software ready to cover the wide area of demands on medical platforms and there applications? The demands of medical platforms stretch more or less the entire range of computational capabilities: * battery powered -robust against power-failures * reliable in rough environment * compliant with safety regulations * robust and secure software platforms * standalone,networked all the way to clusters * extensibility for specialized hardware and software * from head-less to multithread graphical user-interfaces And all this for devices that sometimes only will be built in a few 10s or hundred devices? What advantages could free-software have here -what limitations are there -where do we still need to do *** software is not the answer to all problems in medical computing (or in any other area) -but it has a plethora of innovative and powerful solutions to *** will outline some of them along with some outstanding medical applications that have been built on free-software components.

Real-time network simulation refers to simulating computer networks in real time so that the virtual network can interact with real implementations of network protocols, network services, and distributed applications. In this paper, we present the motivation behind real-time network simulation and compare it against other major networking research tools, including analytical models, physical testbeds, simulation, and emulation. We introduce PRIME, a parallel real-time network simulator, and provide a summary of techniques that allow PRIME to model large-scale networks and interact with many real applications under the real-time constraint. We also discuss ongoing research efforts that will allow real-time network simulation to assume important roles at supporting future networking research.

In this work, a fast implementation method for deblocking filter of H.264/AVC and its architecture are proposed. Proposed method makes use of the correlation of the adjacent pixels to decrease the redundant processing cycles. Simulation results show that using proposed method, the average coding cycles for one macroblock is reduced to 170. It is fast than that of the previous works which considered that the least filtering cycles number for one macroblock is 192. This work also provide an efficient architecture for the proposed method in which a parallel memory access solution and a novel comparison module are proposed. Implementation results show that the proposed architecture can be realized by only 30.14 K gates.

Environmental monitoring requires that raw data acquired from sensors and/or data repositories be transformed, by scientific analysis, into assessments of current ecosystem conditions and in evolution trends in time and space. The huge data amount produced by different sources, the complexity of the environmental models adopted and the necessary distributed collaboration between scientists and government agencies, require specific applications to process and understand environmental phenomena and validate results. GIS domain received a great deal of attention from the scientific and industrial applications communities. Many algorithms, protocols, and applications have been built through the ears for the collection, investigation, analysis, and synthesis of data obtained from sensors ranging from temperature, pressure, etc. to satellite imaging. Almost all attempts have been made to deal with data obtained from lumped repositories. Little or almost none works are reported about a general and flexible mechanism used to display geo-dependent data as it is generated. In this paper we present a GIS platform whose goal is to efficiently mine, fuse, and exploit environmental data and to synthetically display the results at the pace the data is produces. A virtual data warehouse to use GIS information is proposed to manage and collect data acquired by and from several sources. The proposed platform allows users to access to environmental data collected by different sources, to register, normalize and visualize data for exploring and analyzing complex structure and relationship, to process data using distributed computing resources and web applications. To evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed prototype, we present a case study related to data fusion of Modis files and Geo-Located real sensor data for air quality monitoring.

A newly developed hard/soft-ware technology of designing a computational server of industrial control grid, called FPGA-CS, replacing the traditional grid-computational server which is located on hart-disk of industrial control computer (ICC) by using a FPGA-based grid-computational server which is embedded into the ICC through PCI-bus slot, is suggested. Also the test experiment and application are introduced. Comparing the FPGA-CS with the traditional industrial control grid server (ICG server), the former has some considerable advantages such as capability of fully parallel calculation (basically better then the DSP), high speed of data-translation on the I/O ports, avoiding the frequent data-transmissions between CPUs, possibility of on-line structure reconfiguring of control functions. Thus, this technology can be widely applied onto the on-line, real-time (the control strategy and/or control mode can be changed according to the changing of conditions of environment and requirements of user by using the on-line structure reconfigure technology of FPGA), and remote control processes, and the usage of FPGA and its installation through PCI-bus slot allows it to be easily manufactured with very low cost and conveniently used, resulting in a very wide and effective application field assisting the distributed operation technology based on multi-CPU grid-server.

This paper presents a framework for time-domain optimization of amplifiers employing a parallel genetic algorithm based on a message passing interface. This methodology achieves a considerable reduction in the optimization time (up to 19 times faster than a serial implementation). Increasing the processing capacity allows searching within a larger design space using complex transistors models, yielding more accurate results. The optimization, based on transient simulations, is possible due to the integration of a genetic algorithm optimizer together with the open-source simulator NGSPICE source-code.

In this paper, we consider a distributed detection problem in wireless sensor networks (WSNs) using ultrawide bandwidth (UWB) communications. Due to the severe restrictions on power consumption, energy efficiency becomes a critical design issue in WSNs. UWB technology has low-power transceivers, low-complexity and low-cost circuitry which are well suited to the physical layer requirements for WSNs. In a typical parallel fusion network, local decisions are made by local sensors and transmitted through a wireless channel to a fusion center, where the final decision is made. In this paper, we control the number of UWB pulses to achieve the energy efficient distributed detection. We first theoretically characterize the performance of distributed detection using UWB communications. Based on the analysis, we then obtain the minimum number of the pulses per detection to meet the required performance. To achieve a near-optimal design, we further propose a multiple access technique based on the random number of UWB pulses. Finally, the performance evaluation is provided to demonstrate the advantage of our design.

The multi-link system such as the musculoskeletal mechanism has a recursive dynamics representation. In order to control the body by the parallel calculation of the recursive algorithms of the inverse dynamics, the time delays of information transmission between the distributed calculation elements are required. These time delays are important to model and analyze the biological motor control as a distributed system, because the neural signal speeds are limited and the time delays are not negligible in the quick movement. And some time delays in the control loop make the moment unstable generally, but the biological motor control are stable and can handle the delays. In this paper, we focus on the function of the renshaw cell in the spinal cord of the biological motor control system. The renshaw cell forms the negative feedback loop of the motor neuron output, then we model the renshaw cell as the low-pass filter of torque output. And we propose a hierarchical distributed motor control system including the time delays for 3-dimensional movements, and the reaching simulation results that the time delay makes the movement unstable and the low-pass filter of torque output could contribute toward stabilizing the time delay loop in the distributed control system.

Association rule mining is one of the most important techniques in data mining. It extracts significant patterns from transaction databases and generates rules used in many decision support applications. Many organizations such as industrial, commercial, or even scientific sites may produce large amount of transactions and attributes. Mining effective rules from such large volumes of data requires much time and computing resources. In this paper, we propose a parallel FI-growth association rule mining algorithm for rapid extraction of frequent itemsets from large dense databases. We also show that this algorithm can efficiently be parallelized in a cluster computing environment. The preliminary experiments provide quite promising results, with nearly ideal scaling on small clusters and about half of ideal (15 fold speedup) on a thirty-two processor cluster.
