Certification-based database replication protocols are a good basis to develop replica recovery when they provide the snapshot isolation level. For such isolation level, no readset needs to be transferred between replicas nor checked in the certification phase. Additionally, these protocols need to maintain a historic list of writesets that is used for certifying the transactions that arrive to the commit phase. Such historic list can be used to transfer the missed state of a recovering replica. We study the performance of the basic recovery approach - to transfer all missed writesets - and a version-based optimization - to transfer the latest version of each missed item, compacting thus the writeset list - and the results show that such optimization reduces a lot the recovery time.

In wireless mesh networks, the connective time would be relatively short in multi-hop nodes because of the mobility of peer nodes and the wireless collision. Therefore, it is important that how peers choose reasonable schemes to gain more benefits and improve the networks performance when they implement the peer-to-peer file sharing in limited environment. On the basis of the researches of peer-to-peer file sharing and the inherent characteristic of wireless mesh networks, a novel venture investment based file sharing model is proposed. The model provides a mechanism to maximize investment benefit and minimize investment venture, and makes optimization investment schemes through a benefit evaluation method. The simulation results show that the venture investment model can assist networks nodes to invest file sharing effectively and improve the performance of networks.

The knowledge discovery process is interactive in nature and therefore minimizing query response time is imperative. The compute and memory intensive nature of data mining algorithms makes this task challenging. We propose to improve the performance of data mining algorithms by re-architecting algorithms and designing effective systems support. From the view point of re-architecting algorithms, knowledge-conscious and cache-conscious design strategies are presented. Knowledge-conscious algorithm designs try and re-use repeated computation between iterations and across executions of a data mining algorithm. Cache-conscious algorithm designs on the other hand reduce execution time by maximizing data locality and reuse. The design of systems support that allows a variety of data mining algorithms to leverage knowledge-caching and cache-conscious placement with minimal implementation efforts is also presented.

Comparison between biosequences and probabilistic models is an increasingly important part of modern DNA and protein sequence analysis. The large and growing number of such models in today's databases demands computational approaches to searching these databases faster, while maintaining high sensitivity to biologically meaningful similarities. This work describes an FPGA-based accelerator for comparing proteins to hidden Markov models of the type used to represent protein motifs in the popular HM-MER motif finder. Our engine combines a systolic array design with enhancements to pipeline the complex Viterbi calculation that forms the core of the comparison, and to support coarse-grained parallelism and streaming of multiple sequences within one FPGA. Performance estimates based on a functioning VHDL realisation of our design show a 190 times speedup over the same computation in optimised software on a modern general-purpose CPU.

Last years have witnessed how crowd simulations have become an essential tool for many virtual environment applications. These applications require both rendering visually plausible images and managing the behavior of autonomous agents, and therefore they need a scalable design that allows them to simultaneously tackle these two requirements. One of the main problems in the design of a scalable crowd simulation consists of efficiently distributing among different computers the semantic database containing the virtual world. In this paper, we propose a genetic approach for distributing the semantic database of crowd simulations in such a way that the dependencies among the computers hosting the pieces of the database are minimized. The proposed approach avoids the saturation of these computers by ensuring that the size of the pieces assigned to each computer is properly balanced. The performance evaluation results show that the proposed approach significantly reduces the resulting overhead in regard to other local search methods, regardless of the movement pattern of the agents. Therefore, it allows an effective partition of the semantic database.

The identification of replicas in a database is fundamental to improve the quality of the information. Deduplication is the task of identifying replicas in a database that refer to the same real world entity. This process is not always trivial, because data may be corrupted during their gathering, storing or even manipulation. Problems such as misspelled names, data truncation, data input in a wrong format, lack of conventions (like how to abbreviate a name), missing data or even fraud may lead to the insertion of replicas in a database. The deduplication process may be very hard, if not impossible, to be performed manually, since actual databases may have hundreds of millions of records. In this paper, we present our parallel deduplication algorithm, called FER-APARDA. By using probabilistic record linkage, we were able to successfully detect replicas in synthetic datasets with more than 1 million records in about 7 minutes using a 20-computer cluster, achieving an almost linear speedup. We believe that our results do not have similar in the literature when it comes to the size of the data set and the processing time. © 2007 IEEE.

We discuss real-world case studies involving the implementation of a Web services middleware tier for the IBM Blue Gene/L supercomputer to support financial business applications. These programs that are representative of a class of modern financial analytics that take part in distributed business workflows and are heavily database-centric with input and output data stored in external SQL data warehouses. We describe the design issues related to the development of our middleware tier that provides a number of core features, including an automated SQL data extraction and staging gateway, a standardized high-level job specification schema, a well-defined Web services (SOAP) API for interoperability with other applications, and a secure HTML/JSP Web-based interface suitable for general users. Further, we provide observations on performance optimizations to support the relevant data movement requirements.

systems such as SETI@home [8] have proven that it is possible to make good use of massive amounts of communication and computing power that would otherwise be wasted in the leaves of the Internet. In this paper we explore this idea in a different setting. We present the TVGrid architecture, which brings parallel application execution to the Digital TV domain, by using the idle communication and processing capacity of a digital TV network. In the proposed architecture, a TV station runs a scheduler that uses unused bandwidth in the digital TV broadcast channel to send tasks to digital TV receivers, which may run them using their unused capacity. Task's outputs are later sent back to the TV station through a return channel (a broadband Internet connection, for example). TV Grid architecture was developed during the studies of the Brazilian Digital TV project. © 2007 IEEE.

Automatic detection and tracking of human hands in video imagery has many applications. While some success has been achieved in human-computer interaction applications, hand tracking would also be extremely useful in security systems, where it could help the system to understand and predict human actions, intentions, and goals. We have designed and implemented a prototype hand tracking system, which is able to track the hands of moving humans in low resolution video sequences. Our system uses grayscale appearance and skin color information to classify image subwindows as either containing or not containing a human hand. The prototype's performance is quite promising, detecting nearly all visible hands in a test sequence with a relatively low error rate. In future work we plan to improve the prototype and explore methods for interpreting human gestures in surveillance video.

Container-managed persistence is an essential technology as it dramatically simplifies the implementation of enterprise data access. However it can also impose a significant overhead on the performance of the application at runtime. This paper presents a layered queuing performance model for predicting the effect of adding or removing container-managed persistence to a distributed enterprise application, in terms of response time and throughput performance metrics. Predictions can then be made for new server architectures - that is, server architectures for which only a small number of measurements have been made (e.g. to determine request processing speed). An experimental analysis of the model is conducted on a popular enterprise computing architecture based on IBM Websphere, using Enterprise Java Bean-based container-managed persistence as the middleware functionality. The results provide strong experimental evidence for the effectiveness of the model in terms of the accuracy of predictions, the speed with which predictions can be made and the low overhead at which the model can be rapidly parameterised.
