G-DEVS/HLA environment for distributed simulations of workflows

We present a Workflow environment allowing distributed simulation based on DEVS/G-DEVS formalisms. A description language for Workflow processes and an automatic transformation of a Workflow into a G-DEVS model have been defined. We then introduce a new distributed Workflow Reference Model with HLA-compliant Workflow components. We detail the HLA objects shared between Workflow federates and present the publishing/subscribing status of each of these federates. Finally, we illustrate the use of this distributed environment with an example of a Microelectronic production Workflow.

This paper describes a simple distributed simulation for support of emergency response exercises. The simulation, called the Immersive Synthetic Environment for Exercises (ISEE), was inspired by the simplicity of web-based role playing games (RPGs) which have all the elements of distributed simulations, but do not rely on complex interoperability software or high-end graphics engines. ISEE uses PHP to generate user;interfaces, MySQL as simulation middleware, and agent-based simulations written in Python determine the behavior and state of simulated objects. It uses a web-interface that allows players to see events, communicate, and assign resources to critical emergency response functions. Test showed that up to 1000 entities could be represented, with a quarter second simulation time step. The application was deployed as a prototype to support a mass-casualty emergency response exercises in May of 2005. Results of the exercise showed that the intended value of distributed simulation (multi-user, immersive experience) was achieved using simple tools with a rapid development time.

The Java Remote Method Invocation (JRMI) specification simplifies the development of distributed Java application, but provides little support to guarantee reliable, highly-available operation. The Aroma System is middleware that transparently enhances the JRMI model with the mechanisms required for consistent replication of client ann server objects. Bg exploiting novel interception mechanisms, the Aroma System is activated at runtime, with minimal modification to the application and to the JRMI infrastructure. The Aroma System adapts the JRMI model for group communication, and exploits an underlying reliable, totally-ordered multicast protocol to provide strong replica consistency. In this paper;we describe the architecture of the Aroma System, and discuss the,mechanisms required to achieve transparent replication of Java RMI objects and to enforce strong replica consistency.

In the scenarios of warehousing or industrial manufacturing, the objects usually should be placed vertically, e.g., a box containing bottles of wine cannot be oblique, and the books should be vertically placed on the shelves. RFID has many attractive advantages, e.g., no requirement on line-of-sight and battery-free for long-term monitoring. Hence, an RFID-based solution was proposed to detect whether tagged objects are oblique. However, the existing solution has two major limitations: (i) it requires that both RFID reader and tagged objects should be static;(ii) it can only consider the case of upside-down detection but fail when objects are oblique with an angle less than 180 degrees. To overcome these limitations, this paper proposes an RFID approach called Mobile Detection of Oblique objects (MDO). In MDO, the tagged objects move relatively in a straight line at a uniform velocity with respect to the reader antenna, e.g., RFID reader antenna is fixed and the objects move on a conveyor belt. MDO compares the collected phase profile and the theoretical phase profile to determine whether the concerned object is oblique or not. We use Commercial-Off-The-Shelf (COTS) RFID devices to implement the MDO approach. Extensive experimental results prove that MDO can precisely detect the oblique objects with an accuracy around 85% under various conditions.

The Java/CORBA paradigm extends Java distributively and allows one to specify and implement multiplatform distributed object architectures. Such multi-client/server architectures, extended with object database management systems (OODBMS) as the principal persistent service, will become object based architectures (or OAs). The analysis and the use of dedicated techniques is required to specify and implement OAs, forcing us to challenge the current design and development approaches. We introduce a model for such an architecture that is based on a semantic distinction between "functional" objects and "data" objects. Functional objects (FOs) are Java/CORBA (client) server distributed objects with well defined (standard) IDL interfaces, data objects (DOs) are FOs "arguments/results" objects persistently stored in the OODBMS. The model relies on constructing a DO-graph, that is used for simple "dataflow" centralized calling mechanism for FOs, and that is induced by correct typed composition of FOs. An example of concrete realization of such a model is the implementation of the Text Retrieval and Enrichment for Vital Information (TREVI) distributed system for the analysis and categorization of natural language English texts (ESPRIT Project EP23311). © 1999 IEEE.

distributed systems with high availability requirements have to support some form of dynamic reconfiguration. This means that they must provide the ability to be maintained or upgraded without being taken off-line. Building a distributed system that allows dynamic reconfiguration is very intrusive to the overall design of the system, and generally requires special skills from both the client and server side application developers. There is an opportunity to provide support for dynamic reconfiguration at the object middleware level of distributed systems, and create a dynamic reconfiguration transparency to application developers. In this paper, we propose a Dynamic Reconfiguration Service for CORBA that allows the reconfiguration of a running system with maximum transparency for both client and server side developers. We describe the architecture, a prototype implementation, and some preliminary test results.

This paper presents a new algorithm for a reconfigurable distributed domain-oriented atomic object service, called DO-RAMBO, which stands for Domain-Oriented Reconfigurable Atomic Memory for Basic objects. This service is suitable for inclusion as a middleware system service for distributed applications requiring atomic read/write data. The implementation substantially extends and refines the abstract RAMBO algorithm of Lynch and Shvartsman that supports individual atomic objects. In this paper, domains are introduced to allow the users to group related atomic objects. The new implementation manages configurations on the basis of domains, significantly improving the utility and the performance of the resulting service. DO-RAMBO guarantees consistency under asynchrony, message loss, node crashes, new node arrivals, and node departures. We present the formal algorithm development for DO-RAMBO and give analytical and empirical results that illustrate the benefit of the new approach.

Clients (user agents) on the World Wide Web vary greatly in computing power-from low-end WAP devices to high-end desktops even other servers as in a B2B scenario. It should be possible to build applications, which transparently adapt to the varying user agents. Most of the existing applications are written to execute only on the server without taking the computation power available on the client into account. In this paper, we suggest a mechanism where an application can be written such that parts of the application can be executed either on the client side or on the server. This decision about which part of the code should be executed where can be taken at compile time or run time. This can either be under full user control or can be done automatically based on parameters like user agent type or server load. applications of this type will allow loaded servers to transfer part of the load to clients to exploit the computing power available at client side.

At present, objects may be located on Corba (Common Object Request Broker Architecture [14]) platforms using either the naming service [15] or the trading service [17], both standardized by OMG (Object Management Group). By associating a name to a Corba object, the naming service helps users in retrieving a particular object managed by a remote server. The trading service allows, on its own, to localize objects according to the properties they have exported to the trader. Directory services, and particularly LDAP (Lightweight Directory Access Protocol [19]), the most famous directory in the world of the Internet, combine features provided by naming and trading services. Directory services provide advanced features to query directory entries on their names and/or their properties. This paper proposes a Directory Service relying on the LDAP naming model, adapted to the management of dynamic Corba objects, that is objects frequently updated. The directory service also proposes query facilities and a query evaluation model adapted to the management of distribution and possible failures induced by the integration of Corba objects in directories.

When coupling applications running on distributed memory architectures or clusters, the coupling library must adapt to the distribution of the data in the memory of each computation node. The library must be prepared to redistribute the data when the coupled applications use different data mappings or when the number of processors of the two architectures are different. Mome is a user-level software DSM which allows programs running on a distributed memory architecture or cluster to create segments and to share data objects through memory mapping. The segments of the DSM form a simple linear address space where all shared objects of applications are allocated. The Mome coupling library accesses the data through mappings of the DSM segments on the memories of the communication thread. The parallel communication threads are distributed on the computation nodes and exploit the communication capacity of each processor.
