Internet of Things (IoT) has evolved from being a vision for the future to being an increasing market reality. Technology companies have dedicated resources and personnel to research into IoT and machine-to-machine (M2M) communication. Internet of Things really involves primarily incorporating sensors to machines and everyday objects. The data from the sensors need to be leveraged by analyzing the data in real time. Cloud applications are tools that help us leverage this acquired data. The objects, tools and environments that we constantly monitor in our daily lives can be made smart and connected to the cloud. This paper is focused on implementing a typical IoT application using a Texas Instrument based MSP430 microprocessor and a cloud based Thingspeak Application. This paper was required as part of a course project at North Carolina A &T State University for an embedded system course.

People recognition in aerial imagery is a complex problem since it involves cameras angles, which are subject to six degrees of freedom. Traditional classifiers used in pattern matching algorithms are not robust enough to deal with such issues. Thus it is necessary to use other techniques such as deep learning methods, e.g. Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN), in order to cope with such a complex problem. However, in spite of providing potentially better recognition results, deep learning methods demand greater processing time, hindering its use on on-board embedded systems of small Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV). This work is a step towards real-time (and possibly on-board) people recognition on aerial imagery. We propose a new approach based on CNN for real-time people recognition on aerial images obtained from cameras attached to small UAVs. This approach combines images from a low-cost thermal camera to detect candidate objects and CNN for the classification task. We have compared our approach with two traditional pattern matching approaches: saliency map detection and cascade classifiers. The obtained results show that, by using CNN, higher rates of correct classification within 95% of precision are obtained. These results have been obtained within real-time processing of 1.08 fps in the worst case on a hardware without any GPU processing.

Although the manual creation of time-triggered schedules for multi-core real-time systems can be a daunting task, state-of-the-art scheduling algorithms are far from being widely used. This suggests that the availability of sound algorithms is only one side of the story: real-time systems have to be groomed substantially before they can serve as input to available algorithms. Moreover, systems engineers struggle with the temporal effects of their design decisions, in addition to the intended timing properties. Therefore, we believe that appropriate tools are the other side of the story. In this paper, we present the multicore extension of the real-time Systems Compiler, a compiler-based tool that analyses given event-triggered real-time systems and transforms them into time-triggered equivalents. We focus on the challenges and pitfalls in the transition from theory to practical implementation and present concrete solutions to resolve them. Existing algorithms need to be adapted for performance and, at model level, bound together appropriately to be applicable, for example. Our experiments substantiate the effectiveness and scalability of our approach, even for large tasks sets. Finally, lessons learned give an insight into implementation and hardware details and their impact on schedulability.

In the recent past, the development of applications and protocols for the Internet of Things (IoT) made a big leap forward. New approaches have emerged to adopt IoT technologies in the realm of industrial automation. This development is also referred to as Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) or Industry 4.0. It is predicted for the number of smart interconnected devices participating in automation systems to grow significantly in the future. However, the industrial domain introduces new requirements for IoT technologies regarding the timeliness of interactions. Current IoT protocols, like the Constrained Application Protocol (CoAP), do not yet provide real-time behavior for the inter-device communication. In our previous work, we have already proposed a real-time extension for CoAP that enables deterministic network behavior through a TDMA-based approach. We have shown that the proposed mechanisms for time synchronization, time slot management, and access control can be realized purely software-based. However, a central instance is needed as a time server. This introduces a Single Point of Failure (SPoF) to the system, limiting the robustness and scalability of the approach. In this paper, we introduce a concept for a distributed time server for CoAP. The proposed concept includes a refined time synchronization mechanism as well as strategies to select multiple time servers and share information between them. Furthermore, the described amendments to the real-time extension are integrated into the lightweight platform-independent jCoAP communication stack and evaluated in a multi-device real-world test bed.

We present an efficient and scalable scheme for implementing agent-based modeling (ABM) simulation with In Situ visualization of large complex systems on heterogeneous computing platforms. The scheme is designed to make optimal use of the resources available on a heterogeneous platform consisting of a multicore CPU and a GPU, resulting in minimal to no resource idle time. Furthermore, the scheme was implemented under a client-server paradigm that enables remote users to visualize and analyze simulation data as it is being generated at each time step of the model. Performance of a simulation case study of vocal fold inflammation and wound healing with 3.8 million agents shows 35x and 7x speedup in execution time over single-core and multi-core CPU respectively. Each iteration of the model took less than 200 ms to simulate, visualize and send the results to the client. This enables users to monitor the simulation in real-time and modify its course as needed.

distributed embedded systems (DESs) must be designed to meet temporal constraints enforced by an application. This usually means applying a message scheduling scheme optimized for a specific configuration that typically depends on the used network topology and various message attributes (e.g. message size). The optimization of the schedule is performed off-line, during the network configuration process, and usually cannot be easily adapted in case of sudden environment changes that would affect the current network configuration. The Flexible time-Triggered (FTT) protocol brings the necessary flexibility to a DES by means of on-line scheduling policy management that is required for operation in dynamic environments. This paper presents an OMNeT++ simulation model aimed at evaluating the scheduling algorithms in FTT-SE networks. The model is assessed using different scenarios and two commonly used scheduling schemes, namely, Rate Monotonic Assignment (RMA) and Earliest Deadline First (EDF).

Actual storage systems are very large, with complex and distributed architectural configurations, composed of various technologies devices. However, simulation, analysis and evaluation tools in the literature do not handle this complex design and these heterogeneous components. This paper presents OGSSim (Open and Generic Storage systems Simulation tool): a new simulation tool for such systems. Being generic to all devices technologies and open to diverse management strategies and architecture layouts, it fulfills all the storage systems needs in term of representativeness. Also, it has been validated against real systems, thus its accuracy makes it a useful tool for the conception of future storage systems, the choice of hardware components and the analysis of the adequacy between the applications needs and the management strategies combined with the configuration layout. This validation confirmed only a maximum of 15% of difference between real and simulated execution time. Also, OGSSim execution in a competitive time, just 3.5 sec for common workloads on a large system of 500 disks, makes it a challenging simulation and evaluation tool. Thus, it is the appropriate and accurate tool for modern storage systems conception, evaluation and maintenance.

With the rapid development of information communication, computer and control technology, the smart grid has become a direction and trend of the development of electric power industry. The ultimate goal of smart grid is to build a panoramic real-time system which covers the whole production process of power system. However, it is difficult to meet the demand of the power system dispatching department to store and process large scale data in the current power system. In view of the above reasons, this paper develops the Mysql-CIM model, realizes the distributed cloud storage of power network data, and develops the application of the parallel topology processing of power network. Verified by the case, this paper develops the model Mysql-CIM fully meet requirements of the smart grid of system reliability, availability, high throughput; In this paper, the development of the power network based on CIM parallel topological processing is applied to realize the fast network topology processing and topology island formation, its running time scale increased to milliseconds, greatly improving the work efficiency of the system.
