We describe our ongoing work to build object-oriented distributed middleware for networked home appliances, which are executed on commodity operating systems. The current prototype has adopted HAVi (Home Audio/Video Interoperability) as distributed middleware for home appliances. We have implemented HAVi in Java, and have adopted Linux as an operating system. Since Java and Linux are running on a variety of platforms, our software can be ported to a target system without modification. Therefore, it becomes easy to develop a new application on a standard PC platform. The paper describes the design issues and the implementation of our system. We have actually implemented several programs that emulate home appliances such as a digital television. We also present some experiences with the current prototype.

The paper develops a distributed systems architecture for dependable Internet based online auctions, meeting the requirements of data integrity, responsiveness, fairness and scalability. It is well known that a tree-based, recursive design approach caters well for scalability requirements. With this observation in mind, the paper develops an approach that permits an auction service to be mapped on to globally distributed auction servers. The paper selects a suitable auction model that treats sellers and buyers symmetrically. This symmetry enables a computational node to play at one level of the tree the role of a seller by dealing with a group of potential buyers as well as to play the role of a potential buyer at the next higher level. Such a symmetric auction (also known as a double auction) is used for supporting a standard auction to be carried out in a hierarchic manner. An architecture is developed and basic algorithms and protocols are presented.

Although Java as expected to have a wide range of embedded applications, there exist some problems in applying Java to real-time systems. It is practical to have a hybrid architecture, in which the Java runtime environment is implemented on a real-time operating system (OS), where those parts of the application requiring real-time properties are implemented in the real-time OS, while those parts requiring GUI features, extensions of features and replacement of programs should be implemented in the Java runtime environment. In this paper, we present interface specifications between Java threads and real-time tasks based the hybrid architecture we have built, called the JTRON (Java on The industrial real-time Operating system Nucleus) specification, and experiences based on application development using its implementation. First, cooperative computation models between Java threads and real-time tasks in the architecture are described. Based on these models, we categorize three types of communication interfaces between Java threads and real-time tasks: the real-time/OS attachment class, shared objects with explicit locking mechanisms, and stream-based communication. By standardizing the interface, not only Java programs but also real-time programs become portable and reusable. Two of the three types of interface can also be applied to other real-time OSs.

MMDB (main memory-resident database) systems have been used for real time applications, such as a stock market and an auction system, which require fast response time and predictable behavior. However, most existing MMDB systems do not support active functionalities. Also, the trigger capability which is specified in SQL3 and implemented in some conventional DBMSs provides only an extremely limited form of active functions. The paper proposes a scheme to add active capabilities to existing MMDB without modifying the kernel. Generally, active functions can be classified into event-triggered active functions, such as decision of buying or selling point according to the state of database, and time-triggered active functions, such as periodic updates of stock prices, which are frequently used in real time applications. The proposed scheme is designed to provide both kinds of active functions for MMDB by putting a time manager which checks an absolute time far a time trigger and an SQL processing module which provides an event trigger.

An open distributed control system (DCS), which consists of many devices and an open network interconnecting them, is now used in many automation areas. For assuring control performance under heavy traffic on the network, simulation of a DCS is required. For this purpose, we propose an object-oriented design pattern approach as a uniform, efficient and accurate method of modeling and simulating a DCS. Four design patterns are proposed. Device constructor and composite-device-constructor patterns describe classes and mechanisms for uniformly structuring device models composed of many kinds of sensors and actuators. A statechart pattern defines classes and the state-transition execution mechanism for realizing the behavior of sensors and actuators in a device. The event-chain pattern defines classes and the event dispatching mechanism among sensors and actuators in both an intra-device and inter-device manner. The systematic implementation procedures from these patterns to the executable Java code of the DCS simulation model are also discussed. Finally the effectiveness of our approach was proved by developing the Java-based DCS modeler and simulator used in building automation.

For future applications, it is important to develop systems using small objects. Such systems must be able to provide uninterrupted services even when some small objects stop. Replicating such objects is one way to do this. However, introducing some type of redundancy into systems generally adds some overhead. Our proposed model reduces this overhead. It is implemented with multi-threaded execution for applications in actual systems. We measured the performance of an implementation for applications connected to databases. The results show that the overhead for ordinary execution and the time required to switch the replicas are both acceptably small. This technique will therefore play an important role in future systems.

Extending the CORBA programming and execution environments to support real-time distributed applications is a subject of growing interest to both research and industry. The time-triggered message triggered object (TMO) programming scheme has been established to remove the severe limitations of conventional object structuring techniques in developing real-time distributed applications. To facilitate the construction of TMO-structured real-time distributed applications consisting of CORBA-compliant components, a middleware named TMO Execution Support (TMOES) has been created. TMOES instantiations residing in cooperating computing nodes also communicate among themselves only via ORBs conforming to the standard specifications. TMOES instantiations cooperate among themselves to support timely execution of TMO methods and interactions among remote TMOs. This paper presents the architecture and an implementation model of TMOES.

The military software developer has a strong mandate to push technology to its limits for superiority in warfare, both in weapons systems and in command and control (C2) systems; strategically, it is hoped that such superiority will minimize the likelihood of combat. Funding realities dictate shorter time to deployment to gain lower costs, and they demand the use of commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) solutions wherever possible to limit custom development. Reuse of frameworks and architectures promises to shorten design time, and reuse of third-party services and components helps to minimize implementation cycles. Capturing the design-intensive decisions associated with domain-dependent techniques as assets that can be used again and again will vastly simplify the building of future projects. These principles have been proven many times, and the paper includes the author's experiences in demonstrating these savings. In order to provide direction to the software developer, this report presents the US Army's approaches, focusing on real-time (RT) CORBA. The author concludes by providing lessons learned from this work and indicates future directions that can improve and extend the use of these technologies for military systems.

A distributed computation satisfies sequential consistency if it is possible to establish a legal ordering of all the operations such that the program order of each site in the distributed system is respected. However, sequential consistency does not necessarily consider the particular real-time instant at which each operation is executed. A timed consistency model addresses how quickly the effects of an operation are perceived by the rest of the system, by requiring that if a write operation is executed at time t, it must be visible to the entire distributed system by time t+/spl Delta/.timed consistency generalizes several existing consistency criteria and it is well suited for applications where the action of one user must be seen by others in a timely fashion.
