The consensus problem is a fundamental problem one has to solve to implement reliable services or applications on top of asynchronous distributed systems prone to failures. Unfortunately, this problem cannot be solved in those systems as soon as one process crashes (Fischer-Lynch-Paterson's impossibility result). Two approaches have been investigated to circumvent this impossibility result. Both consist in enriching the underlying system with appropriate "oracles". The unreliable failure detector concept proposed by Chandra and Toueg (1996) constitutes one family of such oracles. Since it has been proposed the failure detector based approach has given rise to several failure detector-based consensus protocols. The other family of oracles consists in allowing each process to use a random number generator. In that case, protocol termination is only probabilistic. A few randomized consensus protocols for message-passing asynchronous distributed systems have been proposed. Moreover, they consider that processes can only propose values from a binary set. This paper proposes a new randomized consensus protocol that allows processes to propose arbitrary values. Contrary to other randomized consensus protocols, the proposed protocol does not require the a priori knowledge of the set of values that can be proposed by processes. It relies on a relatively simple combination of randomization and reliable broadcast.

Network surveillance (NS), which is basically a (partially or fully) decentralized mode of detecting the faulty/repaired status of distributed computing (DC) components, is a major part of real-time (RT) fault-tolerant DC. One NS technique which is broadly applicable and amenable to rigorous quantitative analyses of fault coverage is the supervisor-based network surveillance (SNS) scheme for use in point-to-point network-based systems. Recently, we have been studying an approach to implementing the SNS scheme within a middleware model, named the TMO (time-triggered message-triggered object) Support Middleware (TMOSM) which is layered above a commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) operating system such as Windows 2000 and functions as a reliable RT execution engine for RT DC applications. The DC applications supported by the TMOSM are those designed by use of the TMO programming scheme. The implementation structure as well as the observed performance of a prototype implementation are discussed.

A generic visualization framework (VF) is proposed in this paper with the aim of aiding the debugging of mobile object-based distributed programs running on large networks. This framework consists of three logical layers, namely, the lower public Intranet (PI), the middle visualization data structures (VDS), and the upper visualization user interface (VUI). The VDS makes the VF generic because data structures can be adapted easily to accommodate different platforms that support mobile objects (agents). The adaptation does not affect the VUI and PI features described in this paper. In the simulation and tests, the VF was adapted for the stable Aglets mobile agent platform, and the preliminary results confirm that the VF is indeed a viable approach to help debug mobile object-based distributed programs running on large networks such as the Internet.

In distributed computing environments, there is a lack of methodologies for modeling communication mechanisms of distributed objects and facilitating later implementation of the model. In this paper, a solution is presented to describe and model the communication of distributed objects in an object-oriented enterprise model even with real-time requirements. The steps include the analysis of entities, communication requirements, and communication mechanisms involving UML (Unified Modeling Language) diagrams, while having the capability of finishing data flow, control flow, object operations and method definitions at the same time. The solution is based on and demonstrated by the distributed extended version of UML, in which time control and a complex message mechanism are introduced.

We advocate the need to exploit formal methods in the development of critical applications on top of RT-CORBA, a recently defined real-time extension of CORBA. We illustrate our approach using the TRIO formal notation. First, we provide a model of the core features of RT CORBA and of the real-time event service. Then we formalize the requirements of a simple application for supervision and control, and we outline the object architecture of its implementation based on the RT-CORBA platform. Finally we show how the above model (RT-CORBA and service plus application objects) can be employed in the proof that the application requirements are actually fulfilled.

Quality of service (QoS) is an important requirement of today's distribution infrastructures. The popularity of object-oriented middleware makes QoS provision in those infrastructures desirable. The system-dependent nature of QoS necessitates a clear separation of concerns and insulation from the application objects. In this paper, QoS integration is investigated from two viewpoints. First, based on the aspect-oriented programming, the integration of QoS mechanisms into the application objects is presented, and second, the hierarchical structure of QoS mechanisms is addressed in a reflection-based approach.

distributed object applications can be made fault tolerant by replicating their constituent objects, and by distributing these replicas across the different computers in the network. The idea behind object replication is that the failure of one replica of an object can be masked from a client of the object because the other replicas can continue to perform any operation that the client requires. We propose IFTS (Intelligent Fault Tolerant CORBA Service) for handling faults of server object replica using a replication concept to support fault tolerance. It can choose the fastest primary replica using the multicast mechanism. It also introduces passive replication for secure fault tolerance. Furthermore, we propose the design and implementation of IFTS service to provide reliability and faster service using multicast technology by extending existing CORBA ORB.

Although the Common object Request Broker Architecture (CORBA) simplifies the implementation of complex, distributed systems significantly, the support of techniques for reliable, fault-tolerant, and secure software is very limited. Extensions, such as the CORBAsec specification provide only a limited choice of coarse-grained mechanisms to specify access rights for components. Any fault-tolerance or security extension for CORBA components needs to trade off data abstraction and encapsulation against implementation specific knowledge about a component's internal behavior, resource usage, interaction and access patterns. These non-functional aspects of a component are crucial for the predictable behavior of security and fault-tolerance mechanisms. However, in contrast to CORBA's interface definition language (IDL), which describes a component's functional interface, there is no general means to describe a component's nonfunctional properties, such as security settings or fault-tolerance. The authors present an approach to role based security for CORBA. Following the idea of aspect oriented programming, we have developed a description language for security settings. The description language uses the eXtended Markup Language (XML) as an underlying representation and allows specification of access rights independently from an object's implementation. A role-editor tool allows for configuration of a component's security settings without affecting the component's source code. Security settings are enforced by our enhanced version of the ORBacus CORBA implementation.
