Large distributed systems may contain millions of objects that have to be managed. This makes it impossible to specify management policies for individual objects. Instead it is necessary to specify policy for groups of objects. This paper describes a framework for the construction of the ADlets distributed Migration Mechanism (ADDMM), which is used by the Adlet System for the management of adlets. The Adlet System is a new approach for multimedia information retrieval and fusion based on the concept of active document advertising, whereby an adlet (the metadata of a document) travels in the network to seek out documents of interest to the parent document, and at the same time advertises its parent document to other interested adlets. ADDMM provides the Adlet System with the facility of managing migrating adlets. ADDMM supports location-independent transparency and minimal interface by utilizing the ADDNS naming system that provides a mechanism for transparent naming and locating adlets, which in turn supports ADDMM transparency at the adlet access level. With the ADDMM migration mechanism, various adlet migration protocols can be constructed and deployed. A visual diagram is introduced to specify such protocols for adlets migration, which can also be employed to specify distributed object management policies. © 2000 IEEE.

The paper presents a novel approach to the automatic identification of objects/classes from a system specification. The methodology is aimed at the development of distributed real time systems (DRTS), especially those conceived for industrial automation applications. UML is used as the modeling language in conjunction with an extended version of traditional DFD (E-DFD), that conveys information on flow type (data or control) and on process complexity and timing constraints. E-DFDs are mapped into a graph and a tool is used to carry out an automatic graph partition, which allows the identification of a set of objects that constitute, from the design and test points of view, the 'best-fitted' architecture. To validate the proposed methodology, a case study is presented and analyzed, comparing two design strategies. © 2000 IEEE.

The aim of this project is to improve the fault-tolerant data communication setup that we proposed previously. From the verification tests for this setup, which integrates two basic schemes, we observed that performance could be very sluggish sometimes, due to time constraints imposed by problematic routing among communicating objects and possible message retransmissions. These constraints, if not relaxed, would restrict the possibility of building useful object-based real-time systems over the Internet. The two schemes in the extant setup are namely (a) consecutive message transmissions to improve the communication reliability, and (b) adaptive buffer management to prevent message losses at the reception side due to buffer overflow. Careful analyses of the previous test data have revealed that inclusion of load balancing would make the setup more responsive. With this motivation in mind, a load-balancing model is proposed in this paper. The different experiments in this project involved both local and remote Internet sites. The preliminary test results indicate that the proposed load balancing scheme can indeed enhance system responsiveness by relaxing time constraints. Therefore, further work and deeper investigations in the same direction are worthwhile. © 2000 IEEE.

This work is a case study. This paper describes how we are provisioning QoS in a real-time distributed object platform dedicated to power plant control applications A previous experiment based on a modified Java-ChorusOS-ATM platform enhanced our knowledge on QoS based distributed object systems. We used RM-ODP/ReTINA as a distributed computing object model where time requirements are specified in terms of QoS parameters. Our goal is to achieve QoS provisioning with off-the-shelf CoS based products in real-time distributed object Architectures to be built. Low level building blocks of the architecture as communication networks and operating systems exist as CoS components. The current step of the project deals with distributed object platforms selection. But it is not so easy to choose a QoS-enabled off-the-shelf middleware.

The time-triggered message-triggered object (TMO) structuring scheme has been established to remove the severe limitations of conventional object structuring techniques in developing real-time distributed computing (RTdC) applications. To facilitate the construction of TMO-structured RTdC applications consisting of CORBA-compliant TMO components, a middleware named TMO Execution Support (TMOES) has been created. TMOES itself is a CORBA object that can be supported by any ORB conforming to the standard specifications. Its instantiation must reside in every computing node involved in RTdC applications. This paper presents the architecture and an implementation model of TMOES.

Today's virtual environments are expected to be distributed to allow collaboration for common purposes. However, they must ensure a high level of quality of service (QoS) to the user, especially in an open context with unknown, a priori, man-in-the-loop event occurrence. This paper presents our distributed Virtual Environment COllaboration Model (DVECOM) and its implementation which aims to provide an end-user QoS support for distributed virtual reality applications. The idea of DVECOM is to guarantee full consistency and soft synchronization of the virtual world distributed displays, with the least rendering degradation possible, and also to auto-adapt the rendering in accordance with the retained strategy, ensuring best effort and least suffering for virtual world rendering. This representation degradation is driven by the users' choices. The receiver-side protocol is based upon the end-user preferences, physical level capability information, as well as the pertinence of the notification to each client (contextual end-user information). When available, such guarantees would make it possible to use DVE out of a closed, oversized, very restricted context for industrial collaborative applications with an expected QoS. © 2000 IEEE.

While recently emerging middleware technologies such as CORBA and DCOM address the complexity of distributed programming, they cannot be directly applied to distributed control system design due to their excessive resource demand and inadequate communication models. We propose a new CORBA design for CAN-based distributed embedded control systems. Our design goal is to minimize its resource need and make it support group communication without losing the IDL (interface definition language) level compliance to the OMG standards. To achieve this, we develop a transport protocol on the CAN and a group communication scheme based on the well-known publisher/subscriber model. The protocol effectively realizes subject-based addressing and supports anonymous publisher/subscriber communication. We also customize the method invocation and message passing protocol, referred to as the general inter-ORB protocol (GIOP), of CORBA so that CORBA method invocations are efficiently serviced on a low-bandwidth network such as the CAN. This customization includes packed data encoding and variable-length integer encoding for compact representation of IDL data types. The new CORBA design clearly demonstrates that it is feasible to use CORBA in developing distributed embedded systems on real-time networks possessing severe resource limitations. © 2000 IEEE.

The paper documents progress to date on a research project, the goal of which is wartime event prediction. It describes the operational concept, the data mining environment, and data mining techniques that use Bayesian networks for classification. Key steps in the research plan are as follows: (1) implement machine learning;(2) test the trained networks;and (3) use the technique to support a battlefield commander by predicting enemy attacks. Data for training and testing the technique can be extracted from the object oriented database that supports the Integrated Marine Multi-Agent Command and Control System (IMMACCS). These data were derived from message traffic generated during US Marine Corps exercises. The class structure in the IMMACCS data model is especially well suited to support attack classification. © 2000 IEEE.

Adaptability and composition are two of the most important research areas in object-oriented systems. Whereas adaptability tries to cope with system evolution by adding/replacing components, composition tries to facilitate system building by placing together different components or pieces of software. Nevertheless, at the present time, object-oriented languages do not provide enough support for the development of true adaptable and composable software because either i) the different computational aspects that appear ira these systems, such as synchronization, concurrency control, distribution, coordination, basic behavior, etc, are mixed in the sanae component or, ii) if they are properly separated in different components, once these components are woven the resulting executable piece of software is too rigid to be adapted or reconfigured at run time. Although several techniques or proposals such as Design Patterns or AspectJ have been proposed, they are not totally satisfactory. With Design Patterns one can achieve certain degree of dynamic adaptability, but future changes in the resulting application must be known at design phase. AspectJ achieves static adaptability. It allows separation of different aspects but, when they are integrated, the resulting code is too rigid to be adapted at run time. In this paper, we present the Disguises Model, a model mainly thought for a clear and consistent separation of the synchronization, concurrency control and distribution aspects (called disguises) from the behavioral aspect Whereas the model allows behavioral code to be written in a standard language like Java, it provides a different language for the specification of disguises and a third language for the specification of the composition rules between the disguises and behavioral components.
