A next generation digital image library system called NetMars has been developed. This system enables moving pictures on the network to be retrieved and viewed, and provides simple compiling functions for rearranging retrieved moving pictures. With NetMars, specific proposals are made for copyright processing, focusing on secondary usage as a new method for distributing video contents. NetMars applies CORBA based object oriented technology in a distributed processing environment. It emphasizes mutual interconnectivity and provides a mechanism for the issuing, distribution, and sharing of information among image libraries existing on multiple networks.

Discusses a complex class of industrial applications involving co-operating multiple applications, each of which itself involves multiple processes. These applications normally work on multiple platforms with multiple languages. The architecture chosen is a distributed object architecture using CORBA in conjunction with a dynamic plug-and-play GUI architecture that uses plug-ins consisting of C++ objects with COM wrappers. The system addresses the issues of working in real time with CORBA by allocating fixed priorities. The presence of a DCOM-based legacy system required the development of a DCOM/CORBA bridge. Furthermore, it used a time-triggered architecture at the lowest level for collecting information from the sensors, and an event-triggered architecture at the global network manager level.

distributed application programmers rely on middleware such as CORBA in order to handle the complexity that arises from the distributed and heterogeneous nature of the underlying computing platform. CORBA, in particular, provides a media streaming mechanism that can be used both for media streaming and for associating QoS requirements with media streams. Despite defining the interfaces of the media streaming mechanism, the corresponding specification does not prescribe how QoS is enforced at low levels by the middleware. This paper describes the design and implementation of a QoS architecture, called Quartz, which has been integrated with CORBA in order to provide a framework that allows applications to transfer real-time media in open systems. This framework is employed to model and simulate a pattern recognition mechanism for use in an automated manufacturing cell, which is also described and analysed in this paper.

Recent work in opening up distributed object systems to make them suitable for applications needing quality of service control has had the side effect of increasing the complexity in setting up, configuring, and initializing such applications. Configuration of distributed applications is more complicated than that of non-distributed applications, simply because of the heterogeneous and distributed nature of the application's components. CORBA and other distributed object middleware simplifies the configuration of distributed object applications, but hides much of the information and control necessary to achieve quality of service (QoS). We describe the techniques and tools that we have developed within our Quality objects (QuO) framework for simplifying the configuration of distributed applications with QoS attributes. We describe a QuO configuration language, as well as the specific configuration needs of particular QoS properties-real-time, security, and dependability-and the support we provide for them.

real-time active database systems are systems that need the logical consistency of computation results and the timing constraint. Especially, real-time systems are generally highly interactive with their environment, reacting to stimuli in the environment. And a wealth of active database models has been proposed and several major prototypes have been produced However, no uniform method for specifying the rule and each manager of active database system in design has yet been proposed within the real-time research community: for an example, real-time object model. This paper presents an architecture of an real-time active database system using time-triggered message-triggered object with incorporating active functionality and real-time constraints into an active database kernel in layered architecture. Also this paper shows how real-time objects are designed to a manager as a module of active database and a rule in active database is represented as an object designed to appropriate to real-time active database.

Specification and Description Language (SDL) is a formal object-oriented language for modelling real-time interactive systems. It is an international Telecommunication Union (ITU) standard. A software architecture is the structure of a program including a set of inter-communication components. These components are often independently executable super objects. We use the architecture design to answer questions such as how the super objects fit together and how to reuse them. We investigate the feasibility and benefits of using SDL to represent the dynamic aspect of the software architectures. It includes a methodology and an accompanying tool, Workflow-to-SDL-Transformation (W2S), for deriving software architectures in SDL from an originally informal use case flow definition. The focus of the research is in the telecom domain, many of which are real-time interactive systems. We applied our method to a partial telecom system. The experimental results are collected and presented. Our result shows the feasibility and benefits of representing the dynamic software architecture in SDL.

The paper describes benchmarking for evolvable and adaptable real time command and control systems. MITRE's Evolvable real-time C3 initiative developed an approach that would enable current real time systems to evolve into the systems of the future. We designed and implemented an infrastructure and data manager so that various applications could be hosted on the infrastructure. Then we completed a follow-on effort to design flexible adaptable distributed object management systems for command and control (C2) systems. Such an adaptable system would switch scheduling algorithms, policies, and protocols depending on the need and the environment. Both initiatives were carried out for the United States Air Force. One of the key contributions of the work is the investigation of real time features for distributed object management systems. Partly as a result of our work we are now seeing various real time distributed object management products being developed. In selecting a real time distributed object management systems, we need to analyze various criteria. Therefore, we need benchmarking studies for real time distributed object management systems. Although benchmarking systems such as Hartstone and distributed Hartstone have been developed for middleware systems, these systems are not developed specifically for distributed object based middleware. Since much of our work is heavily based on distributed objects, we developed benchmarking systems by adapting the Hartstone system. The paper describes our efforts in developing benchmarks.

Presents an approach towards the automatic synthesis of implementations from real-time object-oriented design models. From an application design model that addresses the functional requirements of the system, and given end-to-end timing requirements, our synthesis approach generates a feasible implementation model, i.e. one that will meet the timing requirements. The synthesis process is supported by automatic code generation that can take the application design model and the synthesized implementation model, and can generate code for the target platform. The synthesis of an implementation model is facilitated through the use of a generic (application-independent) implementation architecture, thereby reducing the synthesis problem to selecting a mapping of the application design model to the artifacts of the implementation architecture. In this paper, we use a multi-threaded event handling architecture with fixed event priorities. The synthesis problem then consists of determining priorities for events and mapping events to threads. We show how, given such a mapping, the response times can be analyzed, and then how, using the analysis, a feasible implementation model can be automatically synthesized.

The paper documents progress to date on a research project, the goal of which is wartime event prediction. It describes the operational concept, the data mining environment, and data mining techniques that use Bayesian networks for classification. Key steps in the research plan are as follows: (1) implement machine learning; (2) test the trained networks; and (3) use the technique to support a battlefield commander by predicting enemy attacks. Data for training and testing the technique can be extracted from the object oriented database that supports the Integrated Marine Multi-Agent Command and Control System (IMMACCS). These data were derived from message traffic generated during US Marine Corps exercises. The class structure in the IMMACCS data model is especially well suited to support attack classification.

In many application domains, the distributed object computing (DOC) middleware is responsible for dispatching upcalls to one or more application objects when events or requests arrive from clients. Implementing efficient, predictable, and scalable middleware dispatching mechanisms is hard and implementing them for multi-threaded systems is even harder. In particular dispatching mechanisms must be prepared to dispatch upcalls to multiple objects, to handle recursive requests originated from application-provided upcalls, and must often collaborate with the application to control object life-cycle. In our DOC middleware research we have implemented many dispatching mechanisms that repeatedly apply common solutions to solve the challenges outlined above. Moreover, we have discovered that the forces constraining dispatching mechanisms often differ slightly thereby requiring alternative solutions. This paper presents two contributions to the design and implementation of efficient, predictable, scalable and flexible DOC middleware and applications. First, it shows how patterns can be applied to the object-oriented systems to capture key design and performance characteristics of proven dispatching mechanisms. Second it presents a pattern language that describes successful solutions that are appropriate for key dispatching challenges that arise in various real-time DOC middleware and applications.
