Software is rarely designed for ultimate adaptability, performance or reusability but rather it is a compromise of multiple considerations. Even for a simple architecture specification, one may identify many alternative implementations. The paper makes an attempt to depict the space of implementation alternatives of architectures, and to define rules for selecting them. The applicability of this approach is illustrated by means of a simple design problem.

Describes the design of VIP (Visual Interface for Promela), a graphical front-end to the model checker SPIN. VIP supports a visual formalism, called v-Promela, that connects the model checker to modern hierarchical notations for the specification of object-oriented, reactive systems. The formalism is comparable to formalisms such as UML-RT (Unified Modeling Language for real-time systems), ROOM (real-time object-oriented Modeling) and Statecharts, but is presented in this paper in a framework that allows us to combine the benefits of a visual, hierarchical specification method with the power of LTL (linear temporal logic) model checking provided by SPIN. Like comparable formalisms, VIP can describe hierarchies of behaviour and of system structure. The formalism is designed to be transparent to the SPIN model checker itself, by allowing all central constructs to be translated mechanically into basic Promela, as already supported by the existing model checker.

The discipline of computer science has always featured a large gap between theory and practice. For example, both the object oriented paradigm and garbage collection techniques go back to at least the 1960s (H. Schorr and W. Waite, 1967; O.J. Dahl and K. Nygard, 1966) but they have only seen widespread commercial acceptance this decade. The Java/sup TM/ programming language has been an important factor leading to the commercial popularization of these techniques. The field of real time computing has suffered from a particularly acute disconnect between theory and practice. Java/sup TM/ technology can be applied to the building of real time systems through a set of standard extensions to the Java/sup TM/ platform. A set of extensions that bring the core benefits of the platform to real time will advance the commercial state of the art. It will help to narrow the gap between theory and practice. The paper explores different aspects of computer systems theory as applied to real time systems. It analyzes whether they are ready to be reduced to practice and standardized.

Technology advances in digital imaging modalities and high speed network have enabled physicians to store digital medical images and integrate them with a patient's text information for fast access by computer. The Picture Archiving and Communication System (PACS) is an archival system for digital medical images. It can deliver images to a physician through user friendly interfaces for interpretation, diagnosis and study. While these technology advances support a large-scale filmless environment in radiology departments, they do not adequately support workflow management. Thus they have very limited use for streamline, automated, and monitoring processes. The paper presents the characteristics and system requirements of an Image Workflow Management System (IWFMS) in a large-scale consortium of hospitals. The paper outlines a run-time object oriented architecture for the implementation of IWFMS. This system is general purpose, open and consists of three layers: coordination, service and tasks. The components in each layer have been designed and implemented as a set of CORBA services that provides seamless integration of flexible high level CORBA distributed object computing middleware with low level image data management. © 1999 IEEE.

We introduce the concept of protocols. A protocol is a formal specification of potentially complex reusable pattern of inter-object behavior. To make it reusable, a protocol is defined independently of any specific object classes or instances. Even though they are defined independently of individual classes, we demonstrate how, using the notion of two-way interfaces called ports, protocols can be formally bound to structures of collaborating objects. This gives us a framework in which it is possible to formally verify if a particular combination of objects can indeed achieve the desired inter-object behavior. A further advantage is that programs with protocol specifications are more understandable and more maintainable than traditional object oriented programs since the required high level behavior is explicit. We describe both protocols and ports using the base concepts of the recent Unified Modeling Language (UML) standard.

We investigate issues related to building highly available World Wide Web (WWW) servers on workstation clusters. We present a novel architecture that includes a dynamic Domain Name System (DNS) and a WWW server based on passive object replication. This architecture allows us to reduce the service down-time of a WWW server without impacting on the Hyper Text Transfer Protocol (HTTP) protocol (and thus on the WWW client software). We implement this architecture in our department and we show some experimental results that analyze, given a batch of HTTP requests, the average response time to a request and the average time of WWW service unavailability due to object crashes.

In the design process of distributed real-time systems, a way must be found to cope with the complexity inherent in these systems. An established technique for this purpose is the decomposition of the system into smaller subsystems with well-defined, stable interfaces among them. In this paper, we propose a design method for the development of distributed real-time systems that are intended for safety-critical applications. The method is devised for the time-Triggered Architecture, which constitutes such a real-time system. For the purpose of decomposition, we introduce a special type of interface, the so-called temporal firewall. In the time-Triggered Architecture, there are three interfaces of this type-the Communication Network Interface, the Controlled object Interface and the Gateway Interface-which partition the real-time system into autonomous subsystems. The design method clearly separates system and subsystem issues and focuses on the definition of the three interfaces between the subsystems. The feasibility and relevance of our design method is demonstrated by means of a small example from the automotive industry.

Typically, most distributed, dependable, real time systems designed in the past can only meet the particular requirements of the application domain to which they were targeted. This approach led to specific, non flexible, dedicated and non reusable solutions, often based on specialized hardware. The paper presents an alternative approach where a flexible run time support for distributed dependable hard real time applications is built on top of off-the-shelf hardware. This support has been designed by considering three fundamental and complementary aspects: real time, to support applications that exhibit strict timing constraints; fault tolerance, to provide a high degree of reliability through the transparent provision of fault tolerant mechanisms; and flexibility, to allow the modifications of components of the run time support without having to rewrite it entirely, and to support a large range of application domains, real time kernels and hardware.

Today, most graphics applications run as local stand-alone programs with transient construction of the data structures used to represent the graphics data. A number of approaches to communicate molecular graphics data over the World Wide Web based on standardized file formats which can be recognized by Web browsers or helper applications have been reported. In a world where most research groups are engaged in remote collaboration, the lack of the possibility of bidirectional synchronous communication is difficult to accept. In this work, we will present a new data communication paradigm using a portable data structure which is based on an underlying object-oriented molecular graphics library, which represents the basis for a Web based collaborative engineering environment allowing the sharing of windows containing two- and three-dimensional information in real time. © 1999, Springer-Verlag.
