A group membership failure (in short, a group failure) occurs when one of the group members crashes. A group failure detection protocol has to inform all the non-crashed members of the group that this group entity has crashed. Ideally, such a protocol should be live (if a process crashes, then the group failure has to be detected) and safe (if a group failure is claimed, then at least one process has crashed). Unreliable asynchronous distributed systems are characterized by the impossibility for a process to get an accurate view of the system state. Consequently, the design of a group failure detection protocol that is both safe and live is a problem that cannot be solved in all runs of an asynchronous distributed system. We analyse a group failure detection protocol whose design naturally ensures its liveness. We show that by tuning appropriately some of its duration-related parameters, the safety property can be guaranteed with a probability as close to 1 as desired. This analysis shows that, in real distributed systems, it is possible to achieve failure detection with a negligible probability of wrong suspicions.

Protection is increasingly a concern for heterogeneous distributed interoperable environments that are appearing. Oviedo3 is an example of an Integral object-oriented System (IOOS) based solely on the OO paradigm, developed over an OO Abstract Machine (OOAM) and OO operating system (OOOS). Integrating capabilities into the object model of the abstract machine gives capabilities new advantages. Examples are automatic protection of capabilities and specially the possibility of more flexible security policies with fine-grained protection. These benefits can also be applied to similar systems lacking this uniform protection mechanism, like Java, making them more suitable for these new environments. A prototype implementation is described with a special permission included to improve performance. Examination of preliminary performance figures together with behaviour of real-world applications and static analysis techniques, point to a favourable cost-benefit balance.

The TMO (time-triggered Message-Triggered object) structuring scheme is aimed at facilitating real-time (RT) distributed software engineering in a form which software engineers in the vast business software field can adapt to with small efforts. It is a syntactically simple and natural but semantically powerful extension of the conventional object structuring approaches. In the course of developing a TMO-structured RT system engineering methodology, an attractively simple approach to parallel and distributed RT simulation has been produced. Also, we recently implemented a TMO execution engine based on the Windows NT platform and named it TMOSM/NT. As an effort for validation of both the execution engine TMOSM/NT and the TMO-structured RT simulation approach, a freeway automobile traffic simulator named distributed object-oriented freeway simulator (DOFS), has been constructed. In this paper, the design techniques and tools applied in development of DOFS are discussed.

Adaptive scheduling meets the need to react in a predictable manner to dynamic, unpredictable changes in the computing system environment. Our TAFT (time-Aware, Fault-Tolerant) scheduling approach especially addresses the realization of this important property for future real-time applications. The main idea is to trade timeliness of tasks to be executed for maximum functionality. TAFT scheduling uses the concept of the expected case execution time (ECET) of a task in order to achieve adaptivity. We describe the design and the implementation of an integrated on-line monitoring and execution time prediction infrastructure that is able to compute the ECETs efficiently during run-time. We explain how object-orientation can be utilized to achieve more fine-grained, and thus often more precise execution time predictions and we exhibit performance figures, that prove the viability of the approach.

The use of a k-coterie (a special set of subsets of nodes) is known as a robust approach to solving the distributed k-mutual exclusion problem in distributed systems. In order to evaluate the fault-tolerance capability of k-coterie-based methods, the notion of (k, /spl tau/) availability has been proposed as a generic measure. However, the applicability of the only existing evaluation method is limited to systems such that the nodes are fully connected by completely reliable links. To overcome the limitation, we propose a new method that can evaluate the (k, /spl tau/)-availability of k-coteries in general topology networks with unreliable nodes and links. The proposed method uses a new notion called minimal quorum spanning forests to perform evaluation effectively. Using the method, we find that the k-majority coterie, which is optimal when the network is completely reliable, is not necessarily optimal if the links can fail and/or the system has a topology other than a complete graph.

The Java/CORBA paradigm extends Java distributively and allows one to specify and implement multiplatform distributed object architectures. Such multi-client/server architectures, extended with object database management systems (OODBMS) as the principal persistent service, will become object based architectures (or OAs). The analysis and the use of dedicated techniques is required to specify and implement OAs, forcing us to challenge the current design and development approaches. We introduce a model for such an architecture that is based on a semantic distinction between "functional" objects and "data" objects. Functional objects (FOs) are Java/CORBA (client) server distributed objects with well defined (standard) IDL interfaces, data objects (DOs) are FOs "arguments/results" objects persistently stored in the OODBMS. The model relies on constructing a DO-graph, that is used for simple "dataflow" centralized calling mechanism for FOs, and that is induced by correct typed composition of FOs. An example of concrete realization of such a model is the implementation of the Text Retrieval and Enrichment for Vital Information (TREVI) distributed system for the analysis and categorization of natural language English texts (ESPRIT Project EP23311).

With the advent of the computer and fifty years of research into artificial intelligence programming techniques, the dream of smart machines has become a reality. The emphasis is not merely to process large quantities of data but rather to extract meaningful information from this data. Knowledge is stored in database and wisdom is used to make decisions. The key of success is our ability to associate information from a variety of different sources that may not have any obvious connection to one another but combine it in a way that provides us with some distinct benefit. distributed computing and object oriented management systems provide necessary support to extract information easily and accurately so that decisions can be taken at once. The EMC scenario is changing rapidly and becoming more and more complex. The information available are so scattered that most of the time we are duplicating the work done by somebody already. distributed computing and Internet technology are not being used properly to integrate this information for the benefit of the EMC society. This paper suggests how the latest technologies developed in the software field con be utilized to gather and correlate the information available in the field of EMC technology. object oriented concepts can be used to extract the wisdom as naturally as the human brain and as easily as clicking the mouse button. This paper also discusses how a real world model con be very useful to depict the problem and suggests the necessary steps to process the information.

We propose a new Web documentation database as a supporting environment of the Multimedia Micro-University project. The design of this database facilitates a Web documentation development paradigm that we have proposed earlier. From a script description to its implementation as well as testing records, the database and its interface allow the user to design Web documents as virtual courses to be used in a Web-savvy virtual library. The database supports object reuse and sharing, as well as referential integrity and concurrence. In order to allow real-time course demonstration, we also propose a simple course distribution mechanism, which allows the pre-broadcast of course materials. The system is implemented as a three-tier architecture which runs under MS Windows and other platforms.

We describe a software mechanism that simplifies the implementation of real-time distributed object-oriented applications. The distributed observable/observer mechanism extends the Observable/Observer concept of Java to a distributed environment, encapsulating the communication protocol used by networking. The mechanism supports the distributed model/view-controller (MNC) paradigm, allowing view-controllers to be attached to remote models by distributed structural object composition (DSOC). DSOC simplifies the development of distributed real-time applications significantly since DSOC objects need only be interconnected to interact properly with each other: We illustrate the distributed observable/observer mechanism with DSOC by examples.

Agent oriented programming(AOP)([2]) is a special kind of object-oriented programming. It can be worked out best for open systems and has the potentials to become a very attractive technique in the future. In this paper, we describe a specification and programming language-SPLAW. The syntax and operational semantics of SPLAW are presented, and by means of labeled transition system, the proof theory is also provided. SPLAW is based on KQML, the standard infer-agent communication language, which makes it possible for agents written in SPLAW to interoperate with of her agents obeying KQML.
