Traditionally transactions have been single-threaded. In such an environment the thread terminating the transaction is, by definition, the thread which performed the work. Therefore, transaction termination is implicitly synchronised with the completion of the transactional work. With the increased availability of both software and hardware multi-threading, transaction services are being required to allow multiple threads to be active within a transaction. In these systems it is important to guarantee that all threads have completed when a transaction is terminated, otherwise some work map not be performed transactionally. In this paper we present a protocol for the enforcement of checked transactional behaviour within an asynchronous environment. We illustrate the use of the protocol within a proposed implementation for a CORBA-compliant object Transaction Service intended for a soft real-time application which makes extensive use of concurrency and asynchronous message passing.

distributed applications are difficult to build and maintain and are even more difficult when the applications are distributed over wide-area networks. distributed object computing middleware has emerged to simplify the building of distributed applications by hiding implementation details behind functional interfaces. However critical applications have non-functional requirements, such as real-rime performance, dependability, or security, that are as important as the functional requirements, but are also hidden by the middleware. Because current distributed object middleware doesn't support these aspects of critical applications, application developers often find themselves bypassing the distributed object systems, effectively gaining little or no advantage from the middleware. We have developed Quality objects (QuO), a framework for including Quality of Service (QoS) in distributed object applications. QuO supports the specification of QoS contracts between clients and service providers, runtime monitoring of contracts, and adaptation to changing system conditions. A crucial aspect of QuO is a suite of Quality Description Languages for describing states of QoS, system elements that need to be monitored to measure the current QoS, and notification and adaptation to trigger when the state of QoS in the system changes. This paper gives a brief overview of QuO and describes the syntax and semantics of CDL, the component of QDL for describing QoS contracts.

We introduce the definition of a language of distributed reactive objects, a Behaviour Description Language (BDL), as a unified medium for specifying, verifying, compiling and validating object-oriented distributed reactive systems. One of the novelties in BDL is its seamless integration into the Unified Modeling Language approach (UML). BDL supports a description of objects interaction which respects both the functional architecture of system designs and the declarative style of diagram descriptions. This support is implemented by means of a partial-order theoretical framework. This framework allows to specify both the causality and the control models of object interactions independently of and hypothesis on the actual configuration of the system. Cir en the description of such a configuration, the use of BDL offers new perspectives for a flexible verification of systems by modeling them as an asynchronous network of synchronous components. It allows an optimized code generation by using compilation techniques developed for synchronous languages. It permits an accurate validation and test of applications by supporting the manipulation of both causal and control dependencies. BDL aims at maximizing the re-usability of high-level specifications while minimizing programming effort and test-case based validation of distributed systems.

One of the major components required for the construction of future complex real-time computer systems (RTCS's) needed in safety-critical applications is a timeliness-guaranteed operating system. A model of an operating system kernel called the DREAM kernel that can support both conventional real-time processes and new-style real-time objects has been formulated recently. The key emphasis in formulating the DREAM kernel was in the realization of guaranteed timely responses to the service requests from supported client programs. This paper presents a summary of the main structuring principles that were exploited to realize guaranteed timely service capabilities while maintaining the modular and easily expandable structure in the DREAM kernel. Implementation of real-time processes and real-time objects involves designing various calls to DREAM kernel services. A library of functions, called the DREAM library and providing user-friendly interfaces to the DREAM kernel, has been developed in the authors' laboratory. This library consists of a collection of specific C++ classes. A 32-bit prototype version of the DREAM kernel, version D3.0, encapsulated by the DREAM library that supports well-structured real-time application programming in C++ has been implemented. This prototype version has been used in efficient development of several real-time object structured applications including a non-trivial defense C-3 system, a steel factory control system, and an advanced traffic management system.

This paper addresses the problem of measuring time in object-oriented event-driven real-time systems. Several possible implementations of the timing subsystem are considered. Some important consequences that an implementation can have on the overall time overhead are discussed. The paper proposes a modified multiple-rate policy of updating software timers. Timing ticks are distributed through a tree structure in a way that tends to minimize the overall overhead, while retaining a small variation of the overhead in different clock cycles. The paper presents the results of a comparative analysis of the described models. The analysis considers different exploitation conditions, in respect to the number of software timers and their resolutions.

A middleware architecture named ROAFTS (real-time object-oriented Adaptive Fault Tolerance Support) is presented. ROAFTS is designed to support adaptive fault-tolerant execution of not only conventional process-structured distributed RT application software but also new-style object-structured distributed RT application software. While ROAFTS contains fault tolerance schemes devised for quantitatively guaranteed real-time fault tolerance, it is also designed to relax that characteristics while the application is in a soft real-time phase in order to reduce resource use. Through three different prototype implementation experiences using both commercial OS kernels and home-grown real-time kernels, the middleware architecture has been refined and its basic capabilities and effectiveness have been validated. The fault tolerance schemes supported and the integrating architecture ale discussed in this paper. Implementation experiences and some future tasks are also discussed.

We present a C++ template run-time library, PROMOTER, and discuss run-time support for data-parallel applications. The PROMOTER run-time library provides a uniform framework for data-parallel applications, covering a broad spectrum of granularity, regularity and dynamicity. It supports user-defined data structures ranging from dense to sparse arrays, regular to irregular index structures and data distributions. The object-oriented design and implementation of the PROMOTER run-time library not only provides an easy data-parallel programming environment, but also leads to an efficient implementation of data-parallel applications through object reuse and object specialization.

High-performance scientific computing relies increasingly on high-level, large-scale, object-oriented software frameworks to manage both algorithmic complexity and the complexities of parallelism: distributed data management, process management, inter-process communication, and load balancing. This encapsulation of data management, together with the prescribed semantics of a typical fundamental component of such object-oriented frameworks-a parallel or serial array class library-provides an opportunity for increasingly sophisticated compile-time optimization techniques. This paper describes two optimizing transformations suitable for certain classes of numerical algorithms, one for reducing the cost of inter-processor communication, and one for improving cache utilization;demonstrates and analyzes the resulting performance gains;and indicates how these transformations are being automated.

We present a parallel runtime substrate that supports a global addressing scheme, object mobility, and automatic message forwarding required for the implementation of adaptive applications on distributed memory machines. Our approach is application-driven;the target applications are characterized by very large variations in time and length scales. Preliminary performance data from parallel unstructured adaptive mesh refinement on an SP2 suggest that the flexibility and general nature of the approach we follow does not cause undue overhead.

MPEG-4 is currently being developed by MPEG to specify the technologies for supporting current and emerging multimedia applications. Because of its object-based features and flexible toolbox approach, it is much more complex than previous video coding standards. We believe that software-based implementation on parallel and distributed computing systems is a natural and viable option. In this paper, we describe such an approach on the MPEG-4 video encoder using a cluster of workstations. We propose to use hierarchical Petri Nets as a modeling tool to describe the temporal relations and time constrains among various video objects at different levels. This would allow us to perform scheduling with a guarantee of synchronization among multiple objects. A dynamic shape-adaptive data parallel approach is used in the spatial domain for further speed-up gain. Our preliminary results indicate that real-time MPEG-4 encoding using distributed and parallel computing is achievable.
