Presents the RTR (real-time reflective) model, which allows a flexible programming of real-time applications in open distributed systems. The RTR model approach is based on object-orientation and reflective computation. Using this approach, real-time constraints can be easily expressed and implemented. Interoperability among distributed heterogeneous components is provided by adapting the RTR model to the CORBA architecture. Also, this paper introduces the Java/RTR language, an extension of Java (Sun Microsystems Inc.) that incorporates concepts of the RTR model. Finally, the main features of the proposed model are compared with other well-known approaches for real-time programming.

To include the specification of timing properties in distributed programs, we propose a method to extend existing programming languages with timing annotations. These annotations provide a similar abstraction from the execution platform as is normal for non-real-time languages. Hence they enable the construction of (hard) real-time programs which can be proved correct independently of any underlying execution platform. The realization of programs on a particular platform is considered as a separate phase where, e.g., scheduling is important. We illustrate the method by means of a simple programming language which is extended with timing annotations. A formal, axiomatic, semantics of the language constructs is defined. It is used to prove the correctness of a small example program.

A considerable number of language mechanisms have been proposed during recent years, to specify and implement concurrent object-oriented programs. The major concern of these proposals is to design an expressive language that provides extensible concurrent processing and synchronization features. Almost all these efforts, however, have focused on the multiple-client-single-server model where each server determines its synchronization semantics without cooperating with other objects. We believe that object-oriented concurrent languages must not only support a single-server model, but cooperatively synchronizing servers as well. We refer to this as multi-server synchronization. We first classify multi-server synchronization into five categories. The intention is to define a framework for evaluating current approaches and identifying the requirements for designing new languages. In addition, we present a composable multi-server synchronization technique, adopting the concept of composition-filters.

In distributed applications, multiple objects are cooperated to achieve some objective. The objects may suffer from certain kinds of faults. If some object o is faulty, it is rolled back to the checkpoint and objects which have received messages from o are also required to be rolled back. In this paper, we define influential messages whose receivers are required to be rolled back if the senders are rolled back in the object-based computation model. By using these influential messages, object-based checkpoints are defined to denote semantically consistent global states of the system which are nevertheless inconsistent with the traditional message-based definition. We show how the number of checkpoints can be reduced by taking only the object-based checkpoints.

In distributed applications, a group of multiple objects cooperate. Group communication protocols have been discussed, which support the reliable and ordered delivery of messages at the network level. However, only messages to be ordered at the application level are required to be causally delivered. The state of the object depends on the order in which the conflicting requests are computed and the responses and requests are transmitted. The authors define the object-based precedence order of messages based on the conflicting relation among the requests. They discuss a protocol which supports the object-based ordered delivery of request and response messages.

Considers a method for extending programming languages that enables the specification of timing properties. The way time is treated is not language-specific and the extension can therefore be included in many existing programming languages. An essential feature is that it enables the construction of (hard) real-time programs that may be proven correct independently of the properties of the machines that are used for their execution. It therefore provides a similar abstraction from the execution platform as is normal for non-real-time languages. The aim of this paper is to illustrate the method and to show how event abstraction is instrumental in obtaining the mentioned properties. We compare our approach to some other methods of including timing constraints in (object-oriented) programming languages.

Command and control systems exist in a world of constantly shifting demands and expectations; therefore, producing scalable, evolvable systems has always been a priority of system designers. However the need to meet performance requirements has often been a restraint on scalability goals. Advances in the speed and capacity of computational and communications equipment have substantially increased the range of scalability that can be achieved while still meeting performance requirements. The High Performance distributed computing Program (HiPer-D) has demonstrated a design for the AEGIS weapons system, which is close to achieving the full range of operational requirements while providing scalability along several dimensions. This paper discusses the HiPer-D design, its context, development, and efforts to achieve system level performance.

Many fault-tolerant systems have been designed for specific fault tolerance requirements and application domains. The author develops a fault tolerance framework that can be easily customized for various system specifications and requirements. The framework is constructed in an object-oriented paradigm. An application program can be plugged in the framework and a desired configuration can be specified to obtain the desired level of fault-tolerance for the application. The framework can also be easily extended to accommodate a wider spectrum of fault assumptions and system models.

The paper presents an approach to the implementation of network multimedia services using a real time object model. The RTO.k model formalized earlier by K.H. Kim et al. (1994) as a timeliness guaranteed computing model forms the basis of our design methodology. We identified a generic structure of Multimedia Service object System (MSOS) as a multimedia service programming paradigm. Each Scenario-RTO in an MSOS controls the flow of multimedia streams. A scenario is composed of a set of (time/message triggered) methods. Communications between MSOSs are handled by the Protocol-RTO. To provide an MSOS execution environment, we have developed a middleware named Windows real time object System (WRTOS) on the top of the Windows OS and the MuX platform. The MuX was developed by ETRI to support basic multimedia service interfaces in heterogeneous distributed systems. This approach facilitates the development of multimedia services by easy formalization of services and parameterized service generation.

The paper presents some basic principles for the design of secure object oriented operating systems. The security relies on the control of right to call an object method. Capabilities are used to implement the control scheme. Our capabilities are named to enforce security (capabilities don't have to be kept secret) and provide a per entity controlled propagation scheme. The propagated capabilities can be limited in different ways for different applications. Capability implementation, creation and rights propagation are discussed. object migration and garbage collection are presented. We also introduce the problems of time synchronization and distribution of the public key server.
