We propose an open signal processing system design and implementation environment, BEEHIVE, that allows application developers to rapidly compose and debug functional specifications in a networked, distributed computing environment, and then later migrate the application (transparently) onto an embedded, distributed, computing hardware/software platform, with the capability to reconfigure (adaptively) the resources assigned to the application to meet the dynamic real-time requirements of the implementation. Recent developments in the area of virtual machines; broker-based, distributed, transportable computing; object-oriented programming methodologies, Java and its real-time extensions; reconfigurable and programmable hardware; approximate algorithms; adaptive-load and resource-management algorithms, are harnessed in this operating environment.

The most important goal in hard real-time systems is to guarantee that all timing constraints are satisfied. Even though object-based techniques (which contain reusable software components) are used to manage the complexity in the software development process of such systems, execution efficiency may have to be sacrificed, due to the large number of procedure calls and contention for accessing software components. These issues are addressed by the following parallelizing techniques: converting potentially inefficient procedure calls to a source of concurrency via asynchronous remote procedure calls (ARPC); and replicating (or cloning) software components to reduce the contention. The existing object-based scheduling algorithms construct an initial schedule and apply incremental parallelization techniques to modify the initial schedule until a feasible schedule is generated. These algorithms are applicable for scheduling only multiple independent tasks. This paper describes a pre-run-time scheduling algorithm for a set of periodic object-based tasks having precedence constraints among them. The algorithm employs parallelism exploitation techniques to guarantee timeliness in almost fully predictable environments such as factory automation, aerospace, and avionics. It allocates the components of object-based periodic tasks to the sites of a distributed system based on a clustering heuristic which takes into account the ARPC parallelism and load balancing, and schedules them on respective sites.

A highly desired property in complex real time distributed computer systems (DCS's) is the high degree of autonomy of the various subsystems that compose the DCS. In recent years, we have formulated two system structuring techniques which could be used as basic tools for enhancing the subsystem autonomy: (1) the RTO.k object structuring scheme, and (2) the Hitachi-UCI (HU) Data Field (DF) interprocess group communication scheme. The RTO.k object structuring scheme has been devised to enable the realization of real time computing in the form of a generalization of non real time computing and yet allow system engineers to confidently produce certifiable real time DCS's. The HU-DF scheme enables the enhancement of the object autonomy, especially the relocation autonomy and the data acceptance autonomy. Schemes for interconnecting RTO.k objects using the HU-DF scheme with the aim for maximizing the subsystem autonomy and easing the design time guarantee of timely service capabilities of the objects are the main theme of the paper. A new approach for interconnecting RTO.k objects is presented. This and the earlier established basic interconnection approach are qualitatively analyzed mainly with respect to their contribution to autonomy and service timing predictability of the subsystems. Both of these approaches have been incorporated into an operating system kernel model named the DREAM kernel and its prototype implementation supporting both conventional real time processes and RTO.k objects with guaranteed timely kernel services.

This paper introduces the Service object Request Management Architecture (SORMA), its design issues, and its concepts. It is a software framework for rapid development of object-oriented software modules and their integration into stand-alone and distributed applications. SORMA provides an intelligent "object-bus" for interoperating and sharing distributed computing and robotics hardware. We investigate the question of why too many valuable hardware and software systems and components are a "one-of-a-kind" product which do not find economical re-use. We analyze the "costs of communication" between the component's builder and all its users, who build solutions. We propose to pay much more attention to interactive exploration frameworks, which support rapid, qualified information gain on context-situated, efficient applicability. SORMA demonstrates how to reach self-explaining, built-in interactivity which does not impair the component's real-time efficiency.

Two major problems in the engineering of software-intensive, real time and distributed computer systems are, without becoming lost in code details: understanding how an implemented system works as a whole; and specifying, before implementation starts, how the required behaviour of the whole system is to be achieved. These lead to other problems, such as, long iteration cycles during forward engineering while various code changes are tried in attempts to fix erroneous system behaviour, and inadvertently introducing code changes during maintenance or reengineering that will damage correct system behaviour because there is a lack of backwards traceability to it from the code. This paper illustrates the application of a new technique called use case maps to solving these problems, using as an example a system constructed from a public domain, object-oriented software framework called ACE.

The paper presents a methodology for risk assessment in complex real time software systems at the early stages of development, namely the analysis/design phase. A heuristic risk assessment technique is described based on colored Petri net (CPN) models. The technique uses complexity metrics and severity measures in developing a heuristic risk factor from software functional specifications. The objective of risk assessment is to classify the software components according to their relative importance in terms of such factors as severity and complexity. Both traditional static and dynamic complexity measures are supported. Concurrency complexity is presented as a new dynamic complexity metric. This metric measures the added dynamic complexity due to concurrency in the system. Severity analysis is conducted using failure mode and effect analysis (FMEA). The methodology presented here is applied to a large scale software system as presented in a companion paper (H. Ammar et al., 1997).

This paper presents an example of risk assessment in complex real-time software systems at the early stages of development. A heuristic risk assessment technique based on colored Petri net (CPN) models is used to classify software according to its relative importance in terms of such factors as severity and complexity. The methodology of this technique is presented in a companion paper (Ammar et al., 1997). This technique is applied on the Earth Operation Commanding Center; a large component of NASA's Earth Observing System (EOS) project. Two specifications of the system are considered: a sequential model and a pipeline model. Results of applying the above technique to both CPN-based models yield different complexity measures. The pipeline model shows clearly a higher risk factor than the sequential model. Whereas using traditional complexity measures, the risk factors were similar in both models.

object-oriented development is a structuring paradigm. It does not provide substantial support for the specification of ‘end to end’ control and data flow. This has implications for hard real-time system development, where applications may specify ‘end to end’ response times, also known as transactions. This paper introduces a graphical notation for the specification of transactions in HRT-HOOD, an object-oriented design technique for hard real-time system development. It provides an overview of the notation, and its practical application as part of a ‘top-down’ development process. This is illustrated through a case study, based on a naval command-control system. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 1996.

State of the art parallel object oriented languages allow the construction of rather complex parallel and distributed data structures. The handling of such data structures on secondary storage for purposes of incremental computing, checkpointing or swapping of user-defined working sets then becomes a task which is hard to perform with conventional I/O mechanisms. On the other hand language-level persistent objects can easily serve as a high-level I/O-substitute provided the associated overhead can be kept low. In this paper we show with the OCORE example how an existing object-oriented parallel programming language can be enhanced with efficient persistence features using the VAST framework. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 1996.
