The autonomy of various subsystem in complex real-time distributed computer systems (DCS's) is a highly desired attribute. Highly autonomous subsystems enable concurrent and largely independent testing/verification and maintenance of the subsystems. In recent years, we formulated two system structuring techniques which could be used as fundamental tools for enhancing the subsystem autonomy: (1) the RTO.k object structuring scheme and (2) the HU-DF inter-process-group communication scheme. Three approaches of using the above two tools for enhancement of the three different basic types of autonomy in an object, (1) relocation autonomy, (2) service timing autonomy, and (3) data acceptance autonomy, are presented.

This paper describes a new approach to modelling robot systems by a large number of cooperating agents solving a robot task. On the one hand the agent model submits to use results of the distributed artificial intelligence (DAI), on the other hand, typical aspects of robot systems must be integrated. Therefore, an agent model will be presented serving the special requirements of robot systems and offering many advantages like robustness, high efficiency, and the chance of integrating reactive and deliberative behavior. The agent model also enables the use of different programming paradigms, ranging from complex over hierarchical to object-oriented agents. Finally, a typical set of agents is presented, forming a multi-layered, distributed and reactive (MDR) robot task-level transformer.

Developers of modern computer based systems are employing object oriented (OO) design methodologies and supporting tool sets with the goal of reducing life cycle costs and improving software quality. A variety of OO methodologies are emerging, with some more suited to information system design, others focused on real-time applications, and the rest of a general purpose nature. The real-time object oriented Modeling (ROOM) technique has been optimized for application specifically to real-time, distributed applications. Its notation has been shaped by a decade of design experience in the telecommunications industry, and is rapidly gaining credibility across the entire spectrum of real-time system application domains. Unlike other OO techniques the ROOM notation has a formal notation which renders executable models at all levels of abstraction and achieves a substantial level of mechanically generated source code. The purpose of this paper is to expose the reader to the fundamentals of the ROOM design methodology and its supporting objectime tool set, and to characterize the strengths of this technique when applied to the analysis and design of state-intensive, real-time, distributed computer-based systems. A sample system implementation is presented which is based on a simplified sonar tracking system. This sample problem has been limited in scope, but has all the design elements which challenge the system design process, including distributed concurrent processing, fault tolerance, and real-time performance. We conclude with an analysis of several inherent strengths and benefits of ROOM methodology applicable to the development of real-time, distributed computer systems.

The "Diaspect", the middleware package we have developed, provides basic industrial computing services common to various ICS applications. The Diaspect family includes a real-time data service that supports the programming of reliable hard real-time data processing, a man-machine service that realizes advanced man-machine functions for sophisticated plant operation, a distributed database middleware that manages the consistency of the distributed database and provides user specific views. We extracted these middleware services based on the analysis of many ICS applications. The author describes the concepts behind the development of the Diaspect, and outlines functions of principal middlewares.

To ease the implementation of distributed object-oriented systems we developed the PDC technique (Proxy/Dispatcher/Collocutor technique), a simple and pragmatic approach to allow addressing of operating-system processes like local objects, i.e., by calling methods that can be dynamically bound. It supports not only concurrency but also distribution over machine boundaries and offers enough flexibility to address real-time requirements, also. On the basis of this technique we developed Process-Build, a prototyping tool for distributed systems. Our approach supports the development of distributed systems from the analysis to the implementation phase of the software life cycle.< >

Our general research problem is to provide models or tools helping with the realisation of real time distributed applications. Inside this framework, it is significant and even crucial to take into account in the early stages of system life cycle, performance parameters such as response time or resources load. Performance evaluation of a real-time distributed environment is a difficult task whose results are often subject to criticism because the model relies on approximations based on developer intuition. In this paper we present results concerning the performance evaluation study of a distributed application platform called Cime computing Environment (CCE), ESPRIT Project no.7096. We explain how we have used a modular and reliable modeling technique and how we have tested each part of the complete model. We have tested the models by comparison with known results of analytical study or measurements experiments. This performance evaluation should help the parameter setting to meet real-time constraints.

An essential building-block for construction of future real-time computer systems (RTCS's) is a timeliness-guaranteed operating system. The first co-author recently formulated a model of an operating system kernel which can support both real-time processes and new-style real-time objects with guaranteed timely services. The model has been named the DREAM kernel. The key emphasis in formulating the DREAM kernel was in realization of guaranteed timely service capabilities with minimal loss of hardware utilization. This paper presents a summary of the main structuring principles that were exploited to realize guaranteed timely service capabilities together with modularity and expandability in the DREAM kernel. A prototype implementation of the DREAM kernel, v.D2, has been produced by the authors to run on a network of PC's connected by an Ethernet. Several implementation techniques that were adopted during the course of this prototype implementation and may be applicable to other real-time kernel development environments, are briefly discussed in this paper. The prototype kernel (v.D2) has been used to run a real-time object structured non-trivial defense C3 application together with a real-time simulator of the application environment.

The paper presents a framework for data modeling and semantic abstraction of image/video data. The framework is based on spatio-temporal information associated with salient objects in an image or in a sequence of video frames and on a set of generalized n-ary operators defined to specify spatial and temporal relationships of objects present in the data. The methodology presented in this paper can manifest itself effectively in conceptualizing events and heterogeneous views in multimedia data as perceived by individual users. The proposed paradigm induces a multilevel indexing and searching mechanism that models information at various levels of granularity and hence allows processing of content-based queries in real time. We also devise a unified object-oriented interface for users with heterogeneous views to specify queries on the unbiased encoded data. This framework is being developed to realize a highly integrated multimedia database architecture.
